The End of the Subordinate Worker: Sharing Economy, On-Demand Economy, Crowdsourcing, Uber Economy and Other Ways of Outsourcing

2015

The Digital era has changed industrial relationships dramatically. This has caused a considerable legal uncertainty about which rules apply to cyberspace. Technology is transforming business organizations in a way that makes the employee - as subordinate work - less necessary. A new type of companies "on demand economy" "sharing economy" - dedicated to connecting customers directly with individual service providers are emerging. Thus, these companies develop their core business completely through workers classified as self-employed workers. In this context, employment law is facing its greatest challenge, dealing with a very different reality compared to the one existing when it was created…

Multiple Objective Analysis of Input-Output Models for Emergency Management

1990

This paper shows how a visual, interactive, dynamic multiple objective linear programming decision support system can effectively be used for analyzing input-output models. We have applied our approach to studying the quantitative effects of economic or political crises to the Finnish economy. Examples of such crises are nuclear power plant accidents, trade embargoes, and international conflicts. An input-output model of the Finnish economy with 17 industries (sectors) is employed. Our system has been implemented on a microcomputer and is being used by the National Board of Economic Defense. Several typical case situations are discussed.

2013

The purpose of this chapter is to analyse the main sociocultural factors and their impact on female entrepreneurship in the innovative service sector in Catalonia (Spain) and to establish differences to male initiatives using the institutional approach as a theoretical framework. Based on a comparative case study, the principal findings suggest that social networks, role models, entrepreneurial attitudes and family context are important determinants of female entrepreneurship. Family context is, in particular, a crucial factor, which might have a larger impact on women than men. Impact of interest rate risk on the Spanish banking sector

2010

This paper examines the exposure of the Spanish banking sector to interest rate risk. With that aim, a univariate GARCH-M model, which takes into account not only the impact of interest rate changes but also the effect of their volatility on the distribution of bank stock returns, is used. The results show that both changes and volatility of interest rates have a negative and significant impact on the stock returns of the Spanish banking industry. Moreover, there seems to be a direct relationship between the size of banking firms and their degree of interest rate sensitivity.

Cosa nostra and Camorra: illegal activities and organizational structures

2016

This article intends to develop an introductory reflection concerning the most recent trends of two of the major Italian mafia organisations: the Sicilian Cosa Nostra and the Campanian Camorra. Following a comparative perspective, the analysis will focus the attention on changes that have occurred in recent years both at the level of illegal activities and at the level of organisational structures. After the bombs of the nineties, Cosa Nostra has moved towards a flexible and less centralised organisation, investing dirty money in the legal economic sector, to reduce its exposure to law enforcement investigations. At the same time, the Camorra clans have considerably widened their range of a…

Dinamiche competitive dei principali prodotti ittici in Italia: possibili strategie di intervento

2011

Over the last few years, the Italian fishery sector has showed a tendential reduction in the economic performance because of the contraction of the value of the product, as a result of the fall in the catches and in the production average prices of the main species, and of the growing operational costs. Therefore, the contraction of the National supply is balanced by the imports which, in terms of value in the reference period tested in the current study (2003/04 – 2007/08) have grown, causing a further burdening in the absolute value of the Italian trade balance. The outlined background is made further worse by the slowdown, in few years, in the rise in the fishery products consumptions, d…

2014

Strategies of internationalization, such as export, have a central role as well to safeguard the market position and survival for many enterprises, including small and medium ones.
