Feature Extraction and Selection for Pain Recognition Using Peripheral Physiological Signals.

2019

In pattern recognition, the selection of appropriate features is paramount to both the performance and the robustness of the system. Over-reliance on machine learning-based feature selection methods can, therefore, be problematic; especially when conducted using small snapshots of data. The results of these methods, if adopted without proper interpretation, can lead to sub-optimal system design or worse, the abandonment of otherwise viable and important features. In this work, a deep exploration of pain-based emotion classification was conducted to better understand differences in the results of the related literature. In total, 155 different time domain and frequency domain features were e…

SMART-ASD, model and ontology definition: a technology recommendation system for people with autism and/or intellectual disabilities

2018

There are many studies that encourage the use of mobile device solutions to improve the skills of people with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). There are a number of apps that may be useful for people with ASD, some specifically designed for them, and others not. The main goal of the SMART-ASD project is to assist in the selection of adequate technology and all related accessories. In this project, the users' data are maintained into an ontology. This ontology also includes information about devices, apps, and protection. The system is a hybrid recommendation system that guides parents and professionals in the selection of the adequate technology. This paper presents the SMART-ASD model an…

CovSel

2018

Ensemble methods combine the predictions of a set of models to reach a better prediction quality compared to a single model's prediction. The ensemble process consists of three steps: 1) the generation phase where the models are created, 2) the selection phase where a set of possible ensembles is composed and one is selected by a selection method, 3) the fusion phase where the individual models' predictions of the selected ensemble are combined to an ensemble's estimate. This paper proposes CovSel, a selection approach for regression problems that ranks ensembles based on the coverage of adequately estimated training points and selects the ensemble with the highest coverage to be used in th…

Outage Analysis of Relay-Aided Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access with Partial Relay Selection

2018

Non-Orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) holds promise as a spectrally efficient multiple access scheme for 5G communication networks. This work investigates the performance of NOMA in a dual-hop amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying network, which is subject to Nakagami-$m$ fading. Specifically, we obtain a novel closed-form expression of the outage probability for the near and far users when the partial relay selection (PRS) scheme is used for selecting the best among $N$ intermediate relays. The users are considered to employ selection combining technique in order to combine the relayed and the direct transmission signals for an increased reliability of detection. Then, we evaluate the impact o…

A risk evaluation framework for the best maintenance strategy: the case of a marine salt manufacture firm

2020

Highlights • This paper proposes a MCDM framework to support risk evaluation for maintenance activities. • The ANP is proposed to select the best maintenance strategy on the basis of real systems’ features. • The ELECTRE III is used to prioritise the main risks related to the interventions of the selected maintenance policy. • The proposed framework is applied to a core subsystem of a real-world marine salt manufacture firm.

Non-speech voice for sonic interaction: a catalogue

2016

This paper surveys the uses of non-speech voice as an interaction modality within sonic applications. Three main contexts of use have been identified: sound retrieval, sound synthesis and control, and sound design. An overview of different choices and techniques regarding the style of interaction, the selection of vocal features and their mapping to sound features or controls is here displayed. A comprehensive collection of examples instantiates the use of non-speech voice in actual tools for sonic interaction. It is pointed out that while voice-based techniques are already being used proficiently in sound retrieval and sound synthesis, their use in sound design is still at an exploratory p…

Bayesian metanetworks for modelling user preferences in mobile environment

2003

The problem of profiling and filtering is important particularly for mobile information systems where wireless network traffic and mobile terminal’s size are limited comparing to the Internet access from the PC. Dealing with uncertainty in this area is crucial and many researchers apply various probabilistic models. The main challenge of this paper is the multilevel probabilistic model (the Bayesian Metanetwork), which is an extension of traditional Bayesian networks. The extra level(s) in the Metanetwork is used to select the appropriate substructure from the basic network level based on contextual features from user’s profile (e.g. user’s location). Two models of the Metanetwork are consi…

Feature selection with Ant Colony Optimization and its applications for pattern recognition in space imagery

2016

This paper presents a feature selection (FS) algorithm using Ant Colony Optimization (ACO). It is inspired by the particular behavior of real ants, namely by the fact that they are capable of finding the shortest path between a food source and the nest. There are considered two ACO-FS model applications for pattern recognition in remote sensing imagery: ACO Band Selection (ACO-BS) and ACO Training Label Purification (ACO-TLP). The ACO-BS reduces dimensionality of an input multispectral image data by selecting the “best” subset of bands to accomplish the classification task. The ACO-TLP selects the most informative training samples from a given set of labeled vectors in order to optimize the…
