Deployment of the ATLAS high level trigger

2005

The ATLAS combined test beam in the second half of 2004 saw the first deployment of the ATLAS high-level triggers (HLT). The next steps are deployment on the pre-series farms in the experimental area during 2005, commissioning and cosmics tests in 2006 and collisions in 2007. This paper reviews the experience gained in the test beam, describes the current status and discusses the further enhancements to be made. We address issues related to the dataflow, selection algorithms, testing, software distribution, installation and improvements

LANDFILL SITE SELECTION FOR MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE BY USING AHP METHOD IN GIS ENVIRONMENT: WASTE MANAGEMENT DECISION-SUPPORT IN SICILY (ITALY)

2018

The goal of this work was to test a methodology, based on multi-criteria analysis and geographic information systems, aimed at identifying areas potentially suitable to host landfills for Municipal Solid Waste (MSW). Although the above-mentioned methodology was applied to three different areas (Western, South-western and Eastern) of Sicily, in this paper, we present the results of the western sector. The first step consisted of the division of the study area in excluded and potentially suitable sites, on the basis of the Italian current legislation. The suitable sites were subsequently re-evaluated based on additional criteria in order to choose the most suitable ones. This second step cons…

An Open Innovation Decision Support System to Select a Biopharmaceutical R&D Portfolio

2015

Drugs available in the market today, selected several years ago under very uncertain future scenario, have experienced a long and expensive process of research and development carried out following both a closed and an open innovation path. To support this critical selection process, we propose a Decision Support System, able to choose among different candidates the most promising drugs along their best development path. The Decision Support System, based on a real options portfolio optimization model, mapping tools, and what-if rules as well, has been applied to a numerical example available in literature, and the research findings show interesting managerial and academic implications. Feature selection for KNN classifier to improve accurate detection of subthalamic nucleus during deep brain stimulation surgery in Parkinson’s patien…

2017

The tremor and dystonia associated with Parkinson’s disease can be treated with deep brain stimulation (DBS) implanted into the subthalamic nucleus (STN). The accurate STN detection is a complex neurosurgeon task during a DBS surgery since a proper fixing of stimulating electrodes will impact on the patient’s future life. The brain electrical signals obtained with Micro Electrodes Register (MER) are acquired at different depths of the brain during DBS surgery to detect STN. In our previous work, we found good accuracy performance to improve the localization of STN using K-Nearest Neighbours (KNN) supervised learning algorithm. However, for real-time classification, it is essential to reduce…

Determining the Set of Concept Map Based Tasks for Computerized Knowledge Self-Assessment

2012

Demands for educated labor force with well-integrated cognitive structures call for necessity to use in educational institutions appropriate teaching and knowledge assessment methods directed towards fine development and assessment of students’ conceptual understanding. Concept maps as a kind of mental models have great potential in knowledge assessment due to several significant advantages. However, a taxonomy of possible concept mapping tasks has not been developed yet. The paper considers the problem of extending a set of concept mapping tasks in the already developed concept map based knowledge assessment system. The possible types of tasks are investigated from the point of view of the…

Laying the foundations for gene therapy in Italy for patients with haemophilia A: A Delphi consensus study

2022

IntroductionCurrent treatment for haemophilia A involves factor VIII replacement or non-replacement (emicizumab) therapies, neither of which permanently normalise factor VIII levels. Gene therapy using adeno-associated viral (AAV) vectors is an emerging long-term treatment strategy for people with severe haemophilia A (PwSHA) that is likely to be available for clinical use in the near future. AimThis article proposes practical guidelines for the assessment, treatment, and follow-up of potential PwSHA candidates for AAV-based gene therapy. MethodUsing the Delphi method, a working group of Italian stakeholders with expertise in and knowledge of the care of adults with haemophilia A analysed l…

The Effective Sample Size

2013

Model selection procedures often depend explicitly on the sample size n of the experiment. One example is the Bayesian information criterion (BIC) criterion and another is the use of Zellner–Siow priors in Bayesian model selection. Sample size is well-defined if one has i.i.d real observations, but is not well-defined for vector observations or in non-i.i.d. settings; extensions of critera such as BIC to such settings thus requires a definition of effective sample size that applies also in such cases. A definition of effective sample size that applies to fairly general linear models is proposed and illustrated in a variety of situations. The definition is also used to propose a suitable ‘sc…

Contemporary practice and technical aspects in coronary intervention with bioresorbable scaffolds : a European perspective

2015

Aims Next to patient characteristics, the lack of a standardised approach for bioresorbable vascular scaffold (BVS) implantation is perceived as a potential explanation for the heterogeneous results reported so far. To provide some guidance, we sought to find a consensus on the best practices for BVS implantation and management across a broad array of patient and lesion scenarios. Methods and results Fourteen European centres with a high volume of BVS procedures combined their efforts in an informal collaboration. To get the most objective snapshot of different practices among the participating centres, a survey with 45 multiple choice questions was prepared and conducted. The results of th…

Cyclic antibiotic therapy for diverticular disease: a critical reappraisal.

2010

Different symptoms have been attributed to uncomplicated diverticular disease (DD). Poor absorbable antibiotics are largely used for uncomplicated DD, mainly for symptom treatment and prevention of diverticulitis onset. Controlled trials on cyclic administration of rifaximin in DD patients were evaluated. Four controlled, including 1 double-blind and 3 open-label, randomized studies were available. Following a long-term cyclic therapy, a significant difference emerged in the global symptoms score (range: 0-18) between rifaximin plus fibers (from 6-6.5 to 1-2) and fibers alone (from 6.7 to 2-3.8), although the actual clinically relevance of such a very small difference remains to be ascertai…
