First Principles Calculations for Hydrogenation of Acrolein on Pd and Pt: Chemoselectivity Depends on Steric Effects on the Surface
2016
The chemoselective hydrogenation of acrolein on Pt(111) and Pd(111) surfaces is investigated employing density functional theory calculations. The computed potential energy surfaces together with the analysis of reaction mechanisms demonstrate that steric effects are an important factor that governs chemoselectivity. The reactions at the C=O functionality require more space than the reactions at the C=C functionality. Therefore the formation of allyl alcohol is more favorable at low coverage, while the reduction of the C=C bond and the formation of propanal becomes kinetically more favorable at higher coverage. The elementary reaction steps are found to follow different reaction mechanisms,…
Steric vs. electronic stereocontrol in syndio- or iso-selective ROP of functional chiral β-lactones mediated by achiral yttrium-bisphenolate complexes
2018
International audience; Origins of stereoselectivity in ROP of racemic chiral cyclic esters promoted by achiral yttrium complexes, resulting in the formation of highly heterotactic polylactide, and highly syndiotactic or, more uniquely, highly isotactic poly(3-hydroxybutyrate)s, are discussed. A close interplay between the nature of the cyclic ester, most particularly of the exocyclic functional chain installed on the chiral center of β-lactones, and the ortho-substituents installed on the phenolate rings of the ligand, results in various determining secondary interactions of steric and also electronic nature.
Chlorodicyclohexylborane-mediated aldol additions of alpha,alpha'-dioxygenated ketones.
2001
Boron aldol additions of variously O-protected alpha,alpha'-dioxygenated ketones using dicyclohexylboron chloride and a tertiary amine have been investigated. The stereoselectivity of the process was dependent on the protecting group on the alpha-oxygen atoms. Notably, ketones with bulky silyloxy groups gave syn aldols, most likely via Z enolates. This rules out the participation of chelates during the enolization process, at least in the presence of such sterically crowded protecting groups. An alternative explanation is offered.
Substrate-dependent fluorinations of highly functionalized cycloalkanes
2016
Abstract Substrate-dependent fluorinations of several highly functionalized cycloalkanes with multiple stereocentres were investigated. The synthetic transformations were based on selective functionalization of the ring C C bonds of the readily available bicyclic β-lactams by epoxidation and regioselective nucleophilic oxirane opening with azide or cyanide, followed by hydroxy–fluorine exchange with Deoxofluor. Depending on the substituents and their relative steric arrangement, the attempted fluorinations produced different types of substituted cycloalkanes. These selective, substrate-directed synthetic procedures and their presumed pathways towards interesting highly functionalized fluori…
Understanding the selectivity in the formation of δ-lactams vs. β-lactams in the Staudinger reactions of chloro-cyan-ketene with unsaturated imines. …
2014
The reactions of chloro-cyan-ketene with two phenyl substituted unsaturated imines yielding β- or δ-lactams have been investigated using DFT methods at the MPWB1K/6-311G(d,p) level in diethyl ether. The reactions are initialised by the nucleophilic attack of the unsaturated imines on the ketene with formation of zwitterionic intermediates. The subsequent C–C single bond formation at the imine carbon or at the β-conjugated position enables the formation of β- or δ-lactams. Analysis of the energies involved in the two competitive channels explains the selectivity experimentally observed; in the absence of any steric hindrance, formation of δ-lactams is favoured over the formation of β-lactams…
Intramolecular Nitrone Cycloaddition of α-(Trifluoromethyl)styrenes. Role of the CF3 Group in the Regioselectivity
2017
The intramolecular 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of ortho-substituted 1,1,1-trifluoromethylstyrene-derived nitrones is described. Tricyclic fused isoxazolidines were obtained as major or exclusive products, in contrast to the case for nonfluorinated substrates, which rendered the bridged derivatives. This change in the regioselectivity was attributed to the electronic and, particularly, steric requirements of the trifluoromethyl group in comparison to the methyl group. It is worth mentioning that trifluoromethylstyrenes have been employed for the first time as dipolarophiles in a 1,3-dipolar intramolecular cycloaddition reaction, leading to the corresponding isoxazolidines bearing a quaternary …
ChemInform Abstract: Stereoselective Synthesis of Substituted Tetrahydropyran Rings via 6-exo and 6-endo Selenoetherification.
2010
Eight unsaturated alcohols were cyclized by selenoetherification in 6-exo or 6-endo manner to give substituted tetrahydropyran rings. Yields, regio- and stereoselectivities were discussed in terms of steric and electroniceffects such as Se-O interaction. For the first time examples of the use of silica gel in selenoetherification and the effect of the X - counter ion of PhSe + on the reaction course are discussed. These effects are related to the occurrence of Se-O interaction.
Stereoselective Glycosylation of Steroid Alcohols Using 2,3,4,6-Tetra-O-pivaloyl-α-D-glucopyranosyl Bromide (Pivalobromoglucose) and 2,3,4,6-Tetra-O…
nBuLi-Mediated hydrophosphination: a simple route to valuable organophosphorus compounds
2010
A straightforward synthesis of homoallyl- and allylphosphanes has been developed using nBuLi-mediated hydrophosphination of conjugated dienes. In all the cases the phosphorus atom of the reacting phosphane attacked the sterically less demanding side of the diene exclusively. In addition, high regioselectivities towards 1,2- or 1,4-addition products were observed depending on the nature of the dienes. This hydrophosphination reaction was extended to a variety of substrates such as styrene derivatives, alkynes and 1,3,5-cycloheptatriene. The structures of three hydrophosphination products were confirmed by X-ray diffraction studies.
Stereocontrol in Diphenylprolinol Silyl Ether Catalyzed Michael Additions : Steric Shielding or Curtin-Hammett Scenario?
2017
The enantioselectivity of amine-catalyzed reactions of aldehydes with electrophiles is often explained by simple steric arguments emphasizing the role of the bulky group of the catalyst that prevents the approach of the electrophile from the more hindered side. This standard steric shielding model has recently been challenged by the discovery of stable downstream intermediates, which appear to be involved in the rate-determining step of the catalytic cycle. The alternative model, referred to as Curtin-Hammett scenario of stereocontrol, assumes that the enantioselectivity is related to the stability and reactivity of downstream intermediates. In our present computational study, we examine th…
