Current debates on online privacy are rooted in liberal theory. Accordingly, privacy is often regarded as a form of freedom from social, economic, and institutional influences. Such a negative perspective on privacy, however, focuses too much on how individuals can be protected or can protect themselves, instead of challenging the necessity of protection itself. In this article, I argue that increasing online privacy literacy not only empowers individuals to achieve (a necessarily limited) form of negative privacy, but has the potential to facilitate a privacy deliberation process in which individuals become agents of social change that could lead to conditions of positive privacy and infor…

2017

2016

The right of the Palestinian people to liberate themselves from foreign occupation in the name of the principle of self-determination has played, and is playing today, a central role in the resolution of the Arab-Israeli problem, representing a real catalyst principle in a process which, unfortunately, remains unfinished. The question today revolves around the fulfilment of an obligation to negotiate conventionally accepted by the parties, considered without alternative by the international community, but which in practice translates into a right of veto over the exercise of self-determination, contradicting the inalienable nature of this principle. Self-determination thus becomes negotiabl…

The Right to Food Sovereignty in International Law

2021

With the adoption of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Peasants and Other People Working in Rural Areas (UNDROP) in 2018, the right to food sovereignty was officially included in an international legal document for the first time. The concept of food sovereignty has been widely analyzed in sociology and politics, whilst it is rarely described in the legal context. This article aims to clarify the relationship among existing norms of international law such as the right to self-determination, the right to development and the right to adequate food with the right to food sovereignty. In order to clarify this relationship the article compares them with food sovereignty as described in the UND…

The role of teachers’ controlling behaviour in physical education on adolescents’ health-related quality of life : test of a conditional process model

2019

Students’ health-related quality of life (HRQoL) may depend on the extent to which the school environment fostered by their teacher is perceived as autonomy-supportive. We tested a conditional process model in a physical education context in which students’ perception of their teachers’ autonomy-supportive behaviour moderated the relationship between perceived controlling behaviour and HRQoL via need frustration. School students (N = 1042) completed self-report measures of perceived teachers’ autonomy support, perceived controlling behaviour, need frustration, and HRQoL. As predicted, the effect of perceived teachers’ controlling behaviour on HRQoL was mediated by need frustration. Perceive…
