Sensitization in early age to food allergens in children with atopic dermatitis

2007

Background: Clinical and laboratory evidence increasingly supports the notion that food allergy plays a role in the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis (AD). However, the prevalence of clinically significant food hypersensitivity among children with AD remains an unanswered question. Objective: To prospectively determine the prevalence of IgE-mediated food hypersensitivity among patients referred to a dermatology department for evaluation of AD, and to analyze the clinical relevance of these sensitizations in AD. Methods: We studied 44 infants of both sexes, aged less than 12 months old, who attended the dermatology department with symptoms of AD. Compliance with Hanifin-Rajka criteria was co…

Effects of CNQX and MPEP on sensitization to the rewarding effects of morphine

2011

The present study was conducted to evaluate the influence of the glutamatergic receptors α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA) and metabotropic glutamate 5 (mGlu5) receptors on sensitization to the rewarding effects of morphine. The effects of pre-treatment with saline or 20 mg/kg morphine plus the AMPA receptor antagonist 6-cyano-7-nitroquinoxaline-2,3-dione (CNQX) (5 or 10 mg/kg) or the metabotropic Glu5 receptor antagonist 6-methyl-2-(phenylethynyl)-pyridine (MPEP) (5 or 10 mg/kg) on the place conditioning induced by a low dose of morphine (2 mg/kg) were assessed. The 2 mg/kg dose of morphine was ineffective in animals pre-treated with saline but induced a clear con…

Urban green and grey space in relation to respiratory health in children

2017

We assessed the effect of three different indices of urban built environment on allergic and respiratory conditions. This study involved 2472 children participating in the ongoing INMA birth cohort located in two bio-geographic regions (Euro-Siberian and Mediterranean) in Spain. Residential surrounding built environment was characterised as 1) residential surrounding greenness based on satellite-derived normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI), 2) residential proximity to green spaces and 3) residential surrounding greyness based on urban land use patterns. Information on wheezing, bronchitis, asthma and allergic rhinitis up to age 4 years was obtained from parent-completed questionnair…

The atypical dopamine transport inhibitor, JHW 007, prevents amphetamine-induced sensitization and synaptic reorganization within the nucleus accumbe…

2013

Benztropine (BZT) analogs, a family of agents with high affinity for the dopamine transporter have been postulated as potential treatments in stimulant abuse due to their ability to attenuate a wide range of effects evoked by psychomotor stimulants such as cocaine and amphetamine (AMPH). Repeating administration of drugs, including stimulants, can result in behavioral sensitization, a progressive increase in their psychomotor activating effects. We examined in mice the sensitizing effects and the neuroplasticity changes elicited by chronic AMPH exposure, and the modulation of these effects by the BZT derivative and atypical dopamine uptake inhibitor, JHW007, a candidate medication for stimu…

Rhinitis as a risk factor for depressive mood in pre-adolescents: a new approach to this relationship

2014

Background Respiratory allergic symptoms impact on social life and school activities, influencing the patient's mood states. We evaluated the relationships between allergic respiratory diseases and depressive/anxious mood in a large sample of Italian middle school students, using the partial directed acyclic graph (P-DAG). Methods We studied 1283 subjects aged 10–13. A health respiratory questionnaire including questions relevant to socioeconomic status (HCI) and a test for depression and anxiety were administered. All subjects performed spirometry and skin prick tests. Results A causal role of rhinitis on depression was found: the likelihood of being depressed increased from 11.2 to 17.7%,…

In vivo cimetidine immunomodulatory effects on the cutaneous reaction to oxazolone in the chicken.

1997

The effect of the histamine H2-receptor antagonist, cimetidine, on the cutaneous Arthus-like hypersensitivity to oxazolone elicited injecting subcutaneously oxazolone conjugated to egg-albumin (EA-OX) has been examined in the chicken. Cimetidine had opposite effects on the cutaneous reaction to oxazolone in relation to a different immunization schedule. Cimetidine enhanced the cutaneous reaction to oxazolone obtained immunizing chickens with oxazolone dissolved in ethanol (Eth-OX); instead cimetidine inhibited the cutaneous reaction obtained in chickens immunized with oxazolone dissolved in complete Freund adjuvant (CFA-OX). Optimum enhancement of the cutaneous arthus-like reaction to oxazo…

Binge ethanol drinking during adolescence modifies cocaine responses in mice

2016

Binge ethanol drinking is an emerging pattern of excessive consumption among adolescents and young adults. Repeated ethanol intoxication has negative consequences during critical periods of brain development. Therefore, binge ethanol intake represents a vulnerability factor that promotes subsequent manifestations of neuropsychiatric disorders. In this study, we investigated the effects of oral binge ethanol intake during adolescence on the subsequent effects of cocaine in C57BL/6 mice. Firstly, we evaluated the oral ethanol intake of two binge ethanol procedures with different ethanol concentrations (20% v/v versus 30%, v/v). The highest ethanol intake was found in mice exposed to the lowe…

Comparison of bronchial and nasal allergen provocation in children and adolescents with bronchial asthma and house dust mite sensitization.

2019

Background Bronchial allergen provocation (BAP) is an established tool for the diagnosis of allergy in patients with asthma, but its use is limited by the potential risk of severe asthmatic reactions. Nasal provocation testing (NPT) may be an alternative safe method and does not require sophisticated equipment. Objective The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the concordance of both methods in patients with asthma and house dust mite (HDM) sensitization. Methods A total of 112 patients with HDM sensitization underwent BAP and had the following parameters analysed: decrease in FEV1, exhaled NO, and total and specific IgE. Within 12 weeks, NPT with HDM was performed in 74 patients …

Expanded Distribution of Pain as a Sign of Central Sensitization in Individuals With Symptomatic Knee Osteoarthritis.

2016

AbstractBackgroundExpanded distribution of pain is considered a sign of central sensitization (CS). The relationship between recording of symptoms and CS in people with knee osteoarthritis (OA) has been poorly investigated.ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to examine whether the area of pain assessed using pain drawings relates to CS and clinical symptoms in people with knee OA.DesignThis was a cross-sectional study.MethodsFifty-three people with knee OA scheduled to undergo primary total knee arthroplasty were studied. All participants completed pain drawings using a novel digital device, completed self-administration questionnaires, and were assessed by quantitative sensory testing. Pain…

Role of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors in the long-term effects of repeated social defeat stress on the rewarding and psychomotor properties of cocai…

2019

Abstract Exposure to social stress increases the vulnerability of experimental animals to the rewarding effects of cocaine and it has been suggested that the glutamatergic system could be involved in these effects of stress. The aim of this work is to determine the role of N-methyl- d -aspartate (NMDA) glutamate receptors in the influence of social stress on the conditioned place preference and locomotor sensitization induced by cocaine. Mice treated with saline or NMDA antagonist memantine (5 or 10 mg/kg) underwent repeated social defeat or were kept in the exploration control condition. After three weeks, all groups (SAL + RSD, M5 + RSD, M10 + RSD, SAL + EXP, M5 + EXP and M10 + EXP) were …
