Adaptive inputs in an interface for people with Dyskinetic Cerebral Palsy: Learning and usability

2016

This study concerns the difficulty in accessing computers faced by people with Dyskinetic Cerebral Palsy (DCP). Thus diminishing their opportunities to communicate or learn. This population usually needs an alternative input human-computer interface (HCI). The paper presents an alternative multimodal HCI that incorporates a head-mounted interface and superficial electromyography sensors (sEMG). The aim of the study is to assess the usability and the suitability of these two HCI devices. Six non-disabled subjects and ten subjects with DCP participated in the iterative process in which each test follows an improvement of an input. The results indicated that for both systems, the improvements …

Clinical utility of novel biosensing platform: Diagnosis of coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 at point of care

2021

Early detection is the first step in the fight against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Therefore, an efficient, rapid, selective, specific, and inexpensive SARS-CoV-2 diagnostic method is the need of the hour. The reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) technology is massively utilized to detect infection with SARS-CoV-2. However, scientists continue to strive to create enhanced technology while continually developing nanomaterial-enabled biosensing methods that can provide new methodologies, potentially fulfilling the present demand for rapid and early identification of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients. Our review presents a summar…

Ultrathin films of layered coordination polymers: charge transport and spin crossover at the nanoscale

2019

Steam sterilization processes affect the stability of clinical thermometers: Thermistor and prototypal FBG probe comparison

2020

Abstract Temperature is one of the most frequently measured physical quantities in clinical environment and a good biomarker of illness. The need for reusable probes, which have to be sterilized to prevent infections, requires the metrological qualification of thermometer probes in response to ageing effects induced by several sterilization processes. In this study, we investigated the effect of repeated sterilizations on both a commonly-used autoclavable thermistor probe and a prototypal Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG) probe for temperature measurements. Findings highlighted a greater reliability of the proposed FBG probe than the commercial thermistor. Specifically, the FBG probe was able to w…

3d-Mapping Of Multiple Mirror Sources In A Room: A Two Channel Intensimetric Method.

2005

A large lecture theatre was analyzed by using a 3D intensimetric measurement method. Sweep signal providing the excitation of the environment was sent to an isotropic source. Sound intensity probe was positioned in some test points of the room and sound intensity vector decay was measured for each of them. The sound board of a PC was utilized to acquire couples of impulse responses for each sound intensity vector component. These signals were combined by using an algorithm implemented in Lab VIEW. Mirror sources were localized and visualized in a three-dimensional map for each measurement point. Resuls are presented as orthogonal projections and 3D-diagrams.

Sensitivity optimization with cladding-etched long period fiber gratings at the dispersion turning point

2016

This work presents a refractive index sensor based on a long period fiber grating (LPFG) made in a reduced cladding fiber whose low order cladding modes have the turning point at large wavelengths. The combination of these parameters results in an improved sensitivity of 8734 nm/refractive index unit (RIU) for the LP0,3 mode in the 1400-1650 wavelength range. This value is similar to that obtained with thin-film coated LPFGs, which permits to avoid the coating deposition step. The numerical simulations are in agreement with the experimental results. This work was supported in part by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science-FEDER TEC2013-43679-R. J.L. Cruz also acknowledges financial s…

Influence of mass transport on the competition between corrosion of aluminium alloy surface and the release of primer containing inhibitors : validat…

2014

The conventional aircraft paint scheme for corrosion protection of aluminum structures is partly based on application of a primer containing inhibitors. In such coatings, release of the inhibiting species enables fast healing of a bare metal surface after a mechanical damage of the protective layers. Nevertheless, considering possible depletion of inhibitors by uncontrolled leaching, it appears important to estimate the corrosion risk integrating “corrosion” sensors in the structure. The objective of this work was to understand the operating mode of a sensor simulating a damaged paint coating whose concept is based on the competition between the triggering of localized corrosion and the pas…

Affinity Sensors for the Diagnosis of COVID-19

2021

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was proclaimed a global pandemic in March 2020. Reducing the dissemination rate, in particular by tracking the infected people and their contacts, is the main instrument against infection spreading. Therefore, the creation and implementation of fast, reliable and responsive methods suitable for the diagnosis of COVID-19 are required. These needs can be fulfilled using affinity sensors, which differ in applied detection methods and markers that are generating analytical signals. Recently, nucleic acid hybridization, antigen-antibody interaction, and change of reactive oxyge…
