Investigations of polymerizable multilayers as gas separation membranes
1985
Abstract Polymerizable Langmuir—Blodgett (LB) multilayers of several diacetylenic amphiphiles were investigated on gas-permeable, polymeric supports. Macroscopically homogeneous multilayer films of hexacosa-10,12-diynoic acid and pentacosa-10,12-diyne phosphonate could be built up on polypropylene and polytetrafluoroethylene materials. As shown by scanning electron microscopy, the microscopic homogeneity of the built-up multilayers was mainly controlled by the surface structure of the support material, whereas the chemical nature of the support and photopolymerization of the layers did not affect the high order of the films. Such LB multilayers deposited on porous support materials are able…
Evidence of Mechanisms Occurring in Thermally Induced Phase Separation of Polymeric Systems
2014
Thermally induced phase separation is a fabrication technique for porous polymeric structures. By means of easy-to-tune processing parameters, such as system composition and demixing temperature, a vast latitude of average pore dimensions, pore size distributions, and morphologies can be obtained. The relation between demixing temperature and morphology was demonstrated via cloud point curve measurement and foams fabrication with controlled thermal protocols, for the model system poly-l-lactide–dioxane–water. The morphologies obtained at a temperature lower than cloud point showed a closed-pore architecture, suggesting a “nucleation-and-growth” separation mechanism, which produced larger po…
Characterization of PLLA scaffolds for biomedical applications
2017
The porosity and pore size distribution of three-dimensional scaffolds have direct implications on their biomedical applications (tissue engineering, drug delivery, and wound dressing). Accordingly, in this paper, a fast, facile, and conservative method relying on low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (LF-NMR) for the evaluation of mean pore size and pore size distribution of polymeric scaffolds is reported. The applicability of the technique is demonstrated on poly-L-lactic acid scaffolds fabricated using the thermal induced phase separation. Results obtained through LF-NMR are successfully compared to scanning electron microscope and X-ray microcomputed tomography micrographs.
Three distinct types of voltage-dependent K+ channels are expressed by Müller (glial) cells of the rabbit retina.
1994
There is ample evidence that retinal radial glial (Müller) cells play a crucial role in retinal ion homeostasis. Nevertheless, data on the particular types of ion channels mediating this function are very rare and incomplete; this holds especially for mammalian Müller cells. Thus, the whole-cell variation of the patch-clamp technique was used to study voltage-dependent currents in Müller cells from adult rabbit retinae. The membrane of Müller cells was almost exclusively permeable to K+ ions, as no significant currents could be evoked in K(+)-free internal and external solutions, external Ba2+ (1 mM) reversibly blocked most membrane currents, and external Cs+ ions (5 mM) blocked all inward …
A new method to isolate microglia from adult mice and culture them for an extended period of time
2009
As the major immuno-competent cells of the brain, microglia are highly implicated in neuro-protection as well as in neurodegeneration. Therefore, they are of key interest for research on numerous CNS diseases. Currently, to model inflammation in the brain, microglial cell lines or primary microglia prepared from embryonic or neo-natal rodents are widely used. However, these in vitro microglial models are not suitable for research in the field of neuro-degenerative diseases where aging is a crucial parameter. Only a few in vitro studies on aged microglia have been published so far, most of which use ex vivo microglia which cannot be kept in culture for prolonged periods of time. In the prese…
Design and performance evaluation of a high power density EMI filter for PWM inverter-fed induction motor drives
2015
This paper presents the design of an electromagnetic interference (EMI) filter for a low voltage high current induction motor drives supplied by DC power grids, such as those used in several vehicle applications. In order to effectively design the EMI filter a suitable Common Mode/Differential Mode (CM/DM) separation technique has been used. In consideration of the high operating currents, a software based separation technique using time domain measurements has been applied. The proposed technique allows the CM and DM sections of the EMI filter to be properly selected in a more economical way, i.e. without the need of dedicated hardware or costly radio frequency (RF) instrumentation. The de…

The Role of Ciphering in Phenomenology of Life
2004
Contemporary philosophy is inseparable from the general tendencies of spiritual life that have dominated over the past centuries. The ruling tendency of European-type philosophy has been the affirmation of a democratic life style, liberal values and human individuality and creative activity. The testimony to this is the proportional growth of the philosophy of subjectivism since modern times, the division of pure practical reason and reasoning into separate spheres to substantiate fundamental human abilities, to analyse the ways of grasping the world — such as cognition, understanding, intuition, deciphering, experience — and describe man’s correlation with beingness (cosmos). Epistemology …
