Mean-field games and two-point boundary value problems

2014

A large population of agents seeking to regulate their state to values characterized by a low density is considered. The problem is posed as a mean-field game, for which solutions depend on two partial differential equations, namely the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation and the Fokker-Plank-Kolmogorov equation. The case in which the distribution of agents is a sum of polynomials and the value function is quadratic is considered. It is shown that a set of ordinary differential equations, with two-point boundary value conditions, can be solved in place of the more complicated partial differential equations associated with the problem. The theory is illustrated by a numerical example.

Flavour Separation of Helicity Distributions from Deep Inelastic Muon-Deuteron Scattering

2009

We present a LO evaluation of helicity densities of valence, \Delta u_v+\Delta d_v, non-strange sea, \Delta\bar{u}+\Delta\bar{d}, and strange quarks, \Delta s (assumed to be equal to \Delta\bar{s}). They have been obtained from the inclusive asymmetry A_{3,d} and the semi-inclusive asymmetries A^{\pi+}_{1,d}, A^{\pi-}_{1,d}, A^{K+}_{1,d}, A^{K-}_{1,d} measured in polarised deep inelastic muon-deuteron scattering. The full deuteron statistics of COMPASS (years 2002-2004 and 2006) has been used. The data cover the range Q^2 > 1 (GeV/c)^2 and 0.004<x<0.3. Both non-strange densities are found to be in a good agreement with previous measurements. The distribution of \Delta s(x) is compatible wit…

Mobile Mental Wellness Training for Stress Management: Feasibility and Design Implications Based on a One-Month Field Study

2013

Background: Prevention and management of work-related stress and related mental problems is a great challenge. Mobile applications are a promising way to integrate prevention strategies into the everyday lives of citizens. Objective: The objectives of this study was to study the usage, acceptance, and usefulness of a mobile mental wellness training application among working-age individuals, and to derive preliminary design implications for mobile apps for stress management. Methods: Oiva, a mobile app based on acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), was designed to support active learning of skills related to mental wellness through brief ACT-based exercises in the daily life. A one-month …

Updating chromatographic predictions by accounting ageing for single and tandem columns.

2018

The most efficient optimization methodologies in liquid chromatography are based on the modeling and prediction of the chromatographic behavior for each compound in the sample. However, when the column suffers some ageing after the modeling process, predictions may differ significantly from the actual separation. Repeating the modeling is especially troublesome when several columns are involved, as is the case of coupled columns. We propose a shortcut to correct the time and peak profiles in these situations, after evaluating the effects of ageing. The original models are corrected by introducing parameters accounting for column ageing, obtained using the data of a small subset of compounds…

Patterning of Suitable Structures for the Investigation of the Josephson Effect in YBa2Cu3O7/PrBa2Cu3O7 Superlattices

1996

The aim of our work is to investigate the Josephson effect in YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7-δ /PrBa 2 Cu 3 O 7-δ superlattices. In the case of current flow along c axis direction the superlattice forms an array of artificial Josephson junctions where the YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7-δ layers are the superconducting electrodes which are separated but Josephson coupled by the PrBa 2 Cu 3 O 7-δ sheets. In this paper we report on the preparation, characterisation and patterning of the superlattices into suitable structures via standard photolithograpy and lift-off technique.

Josephson effect in superfluid atomic Fermi-gases

2002

We consider an analog of the internal Josephson effect in superfluid atomic Fermi-gases. Four different hyperfine states of the atoms are assumed to be trapped and to form two superfluids via the BCS-type pairing. Weshow that Josephson oscillations can be realized by coupling the superfluids with two laser fields. Choosing the laser detunings in a suitable way leads to an asymmetric below-gap tunneling effect for which there exists no analogue in the context of solid-state superconductivity.

Characterisation of Cooper pair boxes for quantum computing

2001

We have measured and characterised superconducting single Cooper pair boxes (SCB) using superconducting single electron transistor (SET) fabricated on the same chip as an electrometer. The electrometer is sensitive to the potential changes of the SCB island and thus measures the number of excess Cooper pairs on the island. The boxes were of the Al/AlOx/Al Josephson junction type. The SCB and SET were characterised separately and the box storage performance for Cooper pairs was analysed by observing the changes in the SCB island potential while sweeping the gate voltage.

Low-field diamagnetic response of granular superconductors at finite temperatures

1994

We study the low-field diamagnetic response of granular superconductors at finite temperatures by means of a simple two-dimensional Josephson-junction array. The temperature effects are taken into account by inserting white-noise current sources in parallel to the resistively shunted junction circuit models of the Josephson junctions of the network. By this analysis we argue that a simplified one-dimensional description of the equivalent circuit, proposed by the authors for cylindrical granular superconductors, is still valid even in the presence of thermally activated flux jumps. A flux-creep picture for intergranular flux motion follows.
