Magnetic separation of encapsulated islet cells labeled with superparamagnetic iron oxide nano particles.

2012

Islet cell transplantation is a promising option for the restoration of normal glucose homeostasis in patients with type 1 diabetes. Because graft volume is a crucial issue in islet transplantations for patients with diabetes, we evaluated a new method for increasing functional tissue yield in xenogeneic grafts of encapsulated islets. Islets were labeled with three different superparamagnetic iron oxide nano particles (SPIONs; dextran-coated SPION, siloxane-coated SPION, and heparin-coated SPION). Magnetic separation was performed to separate encapsulated islets from the empty capsules, and cell viability and function were tested. Islets labeled with 1000 μg Fe/ml dextran-coated SPIONs expe…

A new method to value efficiency of enzyme blends for pancreatic tissue digestion.

2010

Islet transplantation, since the 90’s, has been resulting to be one of the best successful example of human cell therapy. Nevertheless, islet isolation procedure is not completely standardized; in fact, more than fifty percent of islets procedures don’t arrive to their transplantation. This is due both to the variability of donor’s pancreas and to an unpredictable enzymatic blend efficiency. Enzymes used in pancreas digestion are extracted from Clostridium histolyticum bacteria and digest several substrates. In particular they have strong collagenolytic activity compared to vertebrate collagenases. However, several impediments persist in human islet isolation success probably due to the var…

Protection of islets in culture by delivery of oxygen binding neuroglobin via protein transduction.

2005

Islet transplantation has become an accepted method to treat type 1 diabetes. To succeed and achieve normal levels of glucose in transplant recipients, the quality of the transplanted islets is of the utmost importance. Lack of oxygen during organ procurement, islet isolation, and subsequent culture triggers apoptosis or necrosis and loss of islet function, causing the yield and quality to diminish. A promising candidate for cytoprotection against oxygen deprivation is neuroglobin (Ngb). Ngb is a recently described member of globin family and is expressed in neurons, retina, and pancreatic islets. To overexpress this protein in the islets and study its ability to protect them, we utilized p…

Acculturation Orientations among Russian Youth in Finland

2023

Despite the fact that much academic attention has been directed to the acculturation of immigrants in Finland, the need to more fully understand how immigrants cope with acculturation is timely. Since the Russian-speaking immigrants represent the biggest immigrant group in Finland, this chapter explores the acculturation orientations among Russian immigrant youth approached from the angle of the festive culture. The findings are based on the data of ethnographic observation and qualitative interviews (n 16) conducted in the central part of Finland. To capture the nuances of dynamic acculturation experiences, the authors applied a bottom-up methodological approach which gives voice to young …

Determining nanomaterials in food

2011

Abstract Nanotechnology has emerged as one of the most innovative technologies and has the potential to improve food quality and safety. However, there are a few studies demonstrating that nanomaterials (NMs) are not inherently benign. This review highlights some current applications of NMs in food, food additives and food-contact materials, and reviews analytical approaches suitable to address food-safety issues related to nanotechnology. We start with a preliminary discussion on the current regulatory situation with respect to nanotechnology in relation to foods. We cover sample preparation, imaging techniques (e.g., electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray microscopy),…

Mathematical Models and their Solutions for Domains of Compex Form

2014

Promocijas darbā tiek apskatīti dažādi oriģināli modeļi un to risinājumi sarežģītas formas apgabaliem.

The effect of the pore structure and zeta potential of porous polymer monoliths on separation performance in ion-exchange mode.

2007

Most often, in bioseparations involving charged macromolecules, the chromatographic systems have low Reynolds and high Peclet numbers. For such systems, an expression is developed and presented in this work for evaluating the throughput in polymeric monoliths where ion-exchange adsorption occurs, as a function of (i) the pressure drop along the length of the monolith, (ii) the functional form and width of the throughpore-size distribution of the monolith, and (iii) the magnitude of the zeta potential on the surface of the throughpores of the monolith. Gaussian and log-normal throughpore-size distributions whose mean throughpore-size and standard deviation values are based on experimentally …

Determination of Glyphosate and AMPA in Food Samples Using Membrane Extraction Technique for Analytes Preconcentration

2021

The method for determining glyphosate (NPG) and its metabolite AMPA (aminomethyl phosphonic acid) in solid food samples using UAE-SLM-HPLC–PDA technique was developed. Firstly, ultrasonic-assisted solvent extraction (UAE) and protein precipitation step were used for the analyte isolation. Then, the supernatant was evaporated to dryness and redissolved in distilled water (100 mL). The obtained solution was alkalized to pH 11 (with 1 M NaOH) and used directly as donor phase in SLM (supported liquid membrane) extraction. The SLM extraction was performed using 2 M NaCl (5 mL) as an acceptor phase. The flow rate of both phases (donor and acceptor) was set at 0.2 mL/min. The membrane extraction t…

Tradycyjny instytucjonalizm i jego znaczenie dla nauk politycznych

2015

The paper presents academic achievements of traditional institutionalism, the first scientific approach in political science, which was developed since the second part of the 19th century in USA, Great Britain, Germany and France. The author argues that this orientation had a creative influence on the progress of the discipline, however this impact is not appreciated by contemporary studies in the field of political science and political theory where limited understanding of the old institutionalism is promoted. The revision of this state of affairs has shown that, apart from the analysis of formal structures and institutions of state power, the traditionalists also have studied political p…
