An on-line mass separator for fission-produced alkali isotopes

1980

Abstract The design of an on-line mass separator installed at the TRIGA reactor in Mainz is described and its performance discussed. A tungsten oven, filled with about 2 g of 235U embedded in graphite, is exposed to a flux of 1.7 × 1011 thermal neutrons (s− cm−2) near the reactor core. After diffusion out of the graphite the fission-produced alkali isotopes are surface-ionized and electromagnetically mass-separated, the resolving power being about 750. Losses during the diffusion out of the target material are discussed. Due to these losses the maximum separator efficiency is about 5%, corresponding to a source strength of about 109 particles s−1 for the most abundant isotopes. The heaviest…

High voltage stabilisation for an on-line isotope separator

1981

Abstract Stabilisation for a high voltage generator up to 60 kV has been developed. The voltage is stable within ±0.1 V. This allows the very accurate acceleration of charged particles.

Heat and mass transfer analysis in single cell of PEFC using different PEM and GDL at higher temperature

2019

Abstract According to the H2 and fuel cell road map in Japan, the target operating temperature of polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) should be 90 °C from 2020 to 2025. In this study, the impact of polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) and gas diffusion layer (GDL)'s thickness on heat and mass transfer characteristics as well as power generation performance of PEFC is investigated at operating temperature of 90 °C. The in-plane temperature distributions on anode and cathode separator are also measured using thermograph. As a result, it is observed that the increase in power from 1 W to 5 W at the current density of 0.80 A/cm2 as well as even temperature distribution within 1 °C can be obtaine…

Terbium Medical Radioisotope Production: Laser Resonance Ionization Scheme Development

2021

Terbium (Tb) is a promising element for the theranostic approach in nuclear medicine. The new CERN-MEDICIS facility aims for production of its medical radioisotopes to support related R&D projects in biomedicine. The use of laser resonance ionization is essential to provide radioisotopic yields of highest quantity and quality, specifically regarding purity. This paper presents the results of preparation and characterization of a suitable two-step laser resonance ionization process for Tb. By resonance excitation via an auto-ionizing level, the high ionization efficiency of 53% was achieved. To simulate realistic production conditions for Tb radioisotopes, the influence of a surplus of Gd at…

β-Delayed and isomer spectroscopy of neutron-rich Ta and W isotopes

2009

Decays of neutron-rich A ~ 190 nuclei have been studied following projectile fragmentation of a 208Pb beam on a 9Be target at the GSI Fragment Separator. Gamma-ray decays from previously reported isomeric states in 188Ta, 190W and 192, 193Re were used as internal calibrations for the particle identification analysis, together with the identification of previously unreported isomeric decays in 189Ta and 191W. The current work also identifies β-delayed γ rays following the decay of 188Ta to 188W for the first time. Gas-filled recoil separator for studies of heavy elements

1995

Abstract A gas-filled recoil separator for the study of heavy elements has been constructed. The separator is of type QDQQ with the first, vertically focusing, quadrupole providing improved matching to the acceptance of the dipole magnet. The separator has been designed also for use in vacuum mode in which case a mass resolving power of ≈ 100 is estimated. The deflection angle is 25° and the radius of curvature is 1850 mm. Maximum beam rigidity is 2.2 T m. In the first experiments, new isotopes in the region Z = 85–90 have been synthesized.

Recent applications of the JYFL gas-filled recoil separator

1997

Abstract The gas-filled recoil separator RITU at the Department of Physics, University of Jyvaskyla (JYFL) was constructed in 1992–1993, and the first experiments were performed in late 1993. RITU differs from other gas-filled separators by having a vertically focusing quadrupole magnet in front of the separating dipole for better matching with the dipole acceptance. New results from RITU include the discovery of 13 previously unpublished isotopes of At, Rn, Fr, Ra, Ac and Th, while experiments in the transuranium region have also been made. Illustrative examples from these studies together with results on background properties, efficiency of separation, and other performance data will be p…

The development and status of the IGISOL technique

1997

Abstract The development of the IGISOL technique since its earliest beginnings at the University of Jyvaskyla in the early '80s is reviewed. The processes involved in ion survival in the ion guide are discussed. The design and performance of ion guides for different types of reactions is summarised. The mass-separated beam quality for different skimmer systems is compared.
