Isomeric states in Rf256

2021

The question of the number and origin of isomeric states in $^{256}\mathrm{Rf}$ arose from two independent experiments but remained unanswered for a decade. To shed light on this puzzle, we studied isomeric decay in $^{256}\mathrm{Rf}$ by measuring conversion electrons with fast fully digital electronics. $^{256}\mathrm{Rf}$ was produced in the fusion-evaporation reactions of $^{50}\mathrm{Ti}+^{207}\mathrm{Pb}$ and $^{50}\mathrm{Ti}+^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$ at the gas-filled recoil separator TransActinide Separator and Chemistry Apparatus. Among a total of 120 decays of $^{256}\mathrm{Rf}$, we detected 22 and 12 decays proceeding through one and two isomeric states. Half-lives of the low- and hi…

The SAGE spectrometer: A tool for combined in-beam gamma-ray and conversion electron spectroscopy

2010

International audience; The sage spectrometer allows simultaneous in-beam -ray and internal conversion electron measurements, by combining a germanium detector array with a highly segmented silicon detector and an electron transport system. sage is coupled with the ritu gas- lled recoil separator and the great focal-plane spectrometer for recoil-decay tagging studies. Digital electronics are used both for the ray and the electron parts of the spectrometer. sage was commissioned in the Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyvaskyla in the beginning of 2010.

New Short-Lived IsotopeU221and the Mass Surface NearN=126

2015

Two short-lived isotopes ^{221}U and ^{222}U were produced as evaporation residues in the fusion reaction ^{50}Ti+^{176}Yb at the gas-filled recoil separator TASCA. An α decay with an energy of E_{α}=9.31(5)  MeV and half-life T_{1/2}=4.7(7)  μs was attributed to ^{222}U. The new isotope ^{221}U was identified in α-decay chains starting with E_{α}=9.71(5)  MeV and T_{1/2}=0.66(14)  μs leading to known daughters. Synthesis and detection of these unstable heavy nuclei and their descendants were achieved thanks to a fast data readout system. The evolution of the N=126 shell closure and its influence on the stability of uranium isotopes are discussed within the framework of α-decay reduced widt…

Spectroscopic Tools Applied to Element Z = 115 Decay Chains

2014

Nuclides that are considered to be isotopes of element Z = 115 were produced in the reaction 48Ca + 243Am at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung Darmstadt. The detector setup TASISpec was used. It was mounted behind the gas-filled separator TASCA. Thirty correlated α-decay chains were found, and the energies of the particles were determined with high precision. Two important spectroscopic aspects of the offline data analysis are discussed in detail: the handling of digitized preamplified signals from the silicon strip detectors, and the energy reconstruction of particles escaping to upstream detectors relying on pixel-by-pixel dead-layer thicknesses.

Towards a "perfect" Penning trap mass spectrometer for unstable isotopes

1992

A Penning trap mass spectrometer has been set up at the on-line isotope separator ISOLDE/CERN for the mass determination of unstable heavy isotopes. The spectrometer should fulfil the following requirements: capture of external ions in high efficiency, high resolving power and accuracy, general applicability to all elements and isotopes available at the on-line facility.

αdecay studies of the nuclides195Rnand196Rn

2001

The new neutron deficient nuclide ${}^{195}\mathrm{Rn}$ and the nuclide ${}^{196}\mathrm{Rn}$ have been produced in fusion evaporation reactions using ${}^{56}\mathrm{Fe}$ ions on ${}^{142}\mathrm{Nd}$ targets. A gas-filled recoil separator was used to separate the fusion products from the scattered beam. The activities were implanted in a position sensitive silicon detector. The isotopes were identified using spatial and time correlations between implants and decays. Two $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ decaying isomeric states, with ${E}_{\ensuremath{\alpha}}=7536(11)\mathrm{keV}[{T}_{1/2}{=(6}_{\ensuremath{-}2}^{+3})\mathrm{ms}]$ for the ground state and ${E}_{\ensuremath{\alpha}}=7555(11)\mathrm{k…

Decay study of 246Fm at SHIP

2011

The decay chain of 246Fm has been investigated employing the SHIP separator at GSI Darmstadt. The 246Fm nuclei were produced via the 40Ar(208Pb, 2n)246Fm fusion-evaporation reaction. Improved values of the half-life, T 1/2 = 1.54(4) s, and of the spontaneous fission branching ratio, b SF = 0.068(6) , of 246Fm were obtained. The $ \beta^{+}_{}$ /electron capture branching ratio, b EC = 0.39(3) , of 242Cf was deduced. Possible structures of high-K states in 246Fm are discussed within the framework of a model calculation based on the Woods-Saxon potential.

Investigation of a gas catcher/ion guide system at the Warsaw cyclotron

2003

NESTER ACC; The properties of a gas-catcher/ion guide system, connected to a mass separator at the Heavy Ion Laboratory of Warsaw University, were investigated by using the α-decay recoil products 219Rn and 215Po, obtained from a 223Ra source. The “plasma effect” was studied by using a 14N beam with intensities ranging from 7 to 64 particledot operatornA, which correspond to power depositions between 1.6 dot operator 1016 and 7.2 dot operator 1017 eV/s for helium pressures of 75 and 380 hPa, respectively.

The identification and confirmation of isomeric states in 254Rf and 255Rf through conversion electron detection

2020

Abstract The neutron-deficient isotopes 254,255Rf were produced in the fusion-evaporation reaction 50Ti + 206Pb at the gas-filled recoil separator TASCA. Decay properties of these nuclei were investigated by applying fast digital electronics. A search for isomeric states in both isotopes was performed by using the accompanying conversion electron emissions. Isomeric states with half-lives of 4(1) μs and >30 μs were measured for 254Rf and 255Rf, respectively, which confirm the findings at different separators. The present experimental results demonstrate the great potential of fast digital electronics for measurements of isomeric states in the heaviest nuclei, which are only producible in sm…
