In vivo Microperfusion Studies: Validation and Potential Uses in Critical Patients

2010

Recent studies have suggested an increase in sepsis rates, this increase is due to several factors, such as the increase in the average age of the population, the growing number of invasive procedures and use of immunosuppressive drugs. The increase in sepsis incidence causes localized endothelial damage in various regions, it was this aspect that led us to focus the studies on the endothelium and in vivo microperfusion investigations in order to contribute to the scientific knowledge in this field. The present study will meticulously analyze this current and complex issue that affects on a daily basis, everyone involved in critical patient care.

Serotyping and genotyping of encapsulated Escherichia coli K1 sepsis isolates with a monoclonal IgG anti K1 antibody and K1 gene probes

1987

Among infectious diseases caused by E. coli the capsular type K1 plays a predominant role. E. coli K1 isolates account for 80% of cases of E. coli neonatal meningitis and 30% of E. coli sepsis strains. Serotyping of K1 strains has conventionally relied upon the use of K1-specific bacteriophages or serum agar methods with polyvalent anti K1 serum. In the study present here, 187 E. coli sepsis isolates have been analysed for production of the K1 antigen using K1 phages, K1 serum agar plates and Latex agglutination and ELISA using an IgG2a anti K1 monoclonal antibody. In total, 33 sepsis isolates (about 18%) were identified as K1 positive, with three of these strains proving negative in all te…

Epidemiology of intensive care unit-acquired sepsis in Italy: Results of the SPIN-UTI network

2018

Background. Sepsis is the major cause of mortality from any infectious disease worldwide. Sepsis may be the result of a healthcare associated infection (HAI): the most frequent adverse events during care delivery especially in Intensive Care Units (ICUs). The main aim of the present study was to describe the epidemiology of ICU-acquired sepsis and related outcomes among patients enrolled in the framework of the Italian Nosocomial Infections Surveillance in ICUs - SPIN-UTI project. Study design. Prospective multicenter study. Methods. The SPIN-UTI network adopted the European protocols for patient-based HAI surveillance. Results. During the five editions of the SPIN-UTI project, from 2008 to…

Towards Laser-Textured Antibacterial Surfaces

2018

AbstractEscherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacterial retention on mirror-polished and ultrashort pulse laser-textured surfaces is quantified with a new approach based on ISO standards for measurement of antibacterial performance. It is shown that both wettability and surface morphology influence antibacterial behavior, with neither superhydrophobicity nor low surface roughness alone sufficient for reducing initial retention of either tested cell type. Surface structures comprising spikes, laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) and nano-pillars are produced with 1030 nm wavelength 350 fs laser pulses of energy 19.1 μJ, 1.01 μJ and 1.46 μJ, respectively. SEM analysis, optic…
