The increase in the prevalence of obesity worldwide has led to great interest in the economic consequences of obesity, but valid and powerful instruments for obesity, which are needed to estimate its causal effects, are rare. This paper contributes to the literature by using a novel instrument: genetic risk score, which reflects the predisposition to higher body mass index across many genetic loci. We estimate IV models of the effect of BMI on labor market outcomes using Finnish data that have many strengths: genetic information, measured body mass index, and administrative earnings records that are free of the problems associated with nonresponse, self-reporting error or top-coding. The fi…

Frame-related Sequences in Chains and Scales of Hilbert Spaces

2022

Frames for Hilbert spaces are interesting for mathematicians but also important for applications in, e.g., signal analysis and physics. In both mathematics and physics, it is natural to consider a full scale of spaces, and not only a single one. In this paper, we study how certain frame-related properties of a certain sequence in one of the spaces, such as completeness or the property of being a (semi-) frame, propagate to the other ones in a scale of Hilbert spaces. We link that to the properties of the respective frame-related operators, such as analysis or synthesis. We start with a detailed survey of the theory of Hilbert chains. Using a canonical isomorphism, the properties of frame se…

Combining inorganic and organic carbon stable isotope signatures in the Schwalbenberg Loess-Palaeosol-Sequence near Remagen (Middle Rhine valley, Ger…

2020

Western Central European Loess-Palaeosol-Sequences (LPS) provide valuable terrestrial records of palaeoenvironmental conditions, which formed in response to variability in the North Atlantic climate systems. Over the last full glacial cycle (∼130 ka), climate oscillations within these systems are best documented in deep sea- and ice cores; the responses of terrestrial systems are not yet fully understood. A better understanding of metabolism governing input and output variables of organic- and inorganic C pools is, however, crucial for investigating landscape-atmospheric feedback processes and in particularly, for understanding the formation of calcareous LPS as environmental archives. Here…

Law and morals in the application of the public policy exception under the twin regulations 1103 and 1104 of 2016

2021

This paper discusses the interactions between fundamental principles of domestic legal systems and non-legal standards in the application of the public policy Generalklausel within the context of the twin Regulations 1103 and 1104 of 2016. In particular, this paper argues that public policy is composed of legal principles only and that there is no space for extra legal standards when the circulation of foreign deeds, decisions and laws is in discussion. This consideration has two consequences. Firstly, the role of good morals within contemporary private international law is extremely reduc

Consideraciones sobre la cláusula irph a la luz de sus antecedentes y de la doctrina consolidada del tribunal de justicia de la union europea

2021

By issuing its judgment of March 3, 2020, the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) has terminated the last episode in the evolution of the IRPH index to which almost a tenth of mortgages have been referring. in Spain, compared to the rest that the Euribor takes as a reference, declaring in essence that consumers will be able to go to court to declare the abusiveness of the clause that the aforementioned index contains in the deeds of constitution of the mortgage. : FORMAL SPOUSES ALIMONY’S AND “COMPENSATORY ALLOWANCE” (PRESTATIONCOMPENSATOIRE) IN FRENCH LEGISATION

2016

International audience; PALABRAS CLAVE: Conséquences économiques du divorce, pension alimentaire entre ex-époux, prestation compensatoire. ABSTRACT: Since 1975, formal spouses alimony's became "compensatory allowance" (prestation compensatoire). This allowance is usually a lump sum form (90%), given by the divorced husband (90%) and concerning long terme marriages (15 years in average). But case-law and academic writings reflect uncertainties: there is no consensus about reasons why for compensatory allowance. Such uncertainties make the appropriate quantification of formal spousal allowance harder to assess.; RESUMEN: Depuis 1975, la pension alimentaire entre ex-époux est devenue une prest…

Erwinia piriflorinigrans sp. nov., a novel pathogen that causes necrosis of pear blossoms

2010

Eight Erwinia strains, isolated from necrotic pear blossoms in València, Spain, were compared with reference strains of Erwinia amylovora and Erwinia pyrifoliae, both of which are pathogenic to species of pear tree, and to other species of the family Enterobacteriaceae using a polyphasic approach. Phenotypic analyses clustered the novel isolates into one phenon, distinct from other species of the genus Erwinia, showing that the novel isolates constituted a homogeneous phenotypic group. Rep-PCR profiles, PCR products obtained with different pairs of primers and plasmid contents determined by restriction analysis showed differences between the novel strains and reference strains of E. amylovo…

The Relationship Between Goal Orientation, Social Comparison Responses, Self-Efficacy, and Performance

2008

The present study examined whether social comparison responses (identification and contrast in social comparison) mediated the relationship between goal orientation (promotion and prevention) and self-efficacy, and whether self-efficacy was subsequently related with a better performance. As expected, the results showed that promotion-oriented individuals – who are focused on achieving success – had higher self-efficacy than prevention-oriented individuals – who are focused on avoiding failure. Only one of the social comparison responses had a mediating role. That is, the tendency to contrast oneself with others who were doing better mediated the relationship between a prevention goal orien…

m6A RNA methylation of major satellite repeat transcripts facilitates chromatin association and RNA:DNA hybrid formation in mouse heterochromatin

2021

Abstract Heterochromatin has essential functions in maintaining chromosome structure, in protecting genome integrity and in stabilizing gene expression programs. Heterochromatin is often nucleated by underlying DNA repeat sequences, such as major satellite repeats (MSR) and long interspersed nuclear elements (LINE). In order to establish heterochromatin, MSR and LINE elements need to be transcriptionally competent and generate non-coding repeat RNA that remain chromatin associated. We explored whether these heterochromatic RNA, similar to DNA and histones, may be methylated, particularly for 5-methylcytosine (5mC) or methyl-6-adenosine (m6A). Our analysis in mouse ES cells identifies only b…

Variable maternal methylation overlapping the nc886/vtRNA2-1 locus is locked between hypermethylated repeats and is frequently altered in cancer.

2014

Cancer is as much an epigenetic disease as a genetic one; however, the interplay between these two processes is unclear. Recently, it has been shown that a large proportion of DNA methylation variability can be explained by allele-specific methylation (ASM), either at classical imprinted loci or those regulated by underlying genetic variants. During a recent screen for imprinted differentially methylated regions, we identified the genomic interval overlapping the non-coding nc886 RNA (previously known as vtRNA2-1) as an atypical ASM that shows variable levels of methylation, predominantly on the maternal allele in many tissues. Here we show that the nc886 interval is the first example of a …
