Fixed versus Growth Mindset Does not Seem to Matter Much
2018
Psychology predicts that a student’s mindset—their implicit theory of intelligence—has an effect on their academic performance. We attempted to corroborate this in the computer science education context by asking the students on two bachelor-level courses, typically taken in the third year of studies, to fill out a standard mindset questionnaire, and analyzing their answers in relation to their grades on those courses. In a sample of 133 students, with only 24 (18 %) students with a clear fixed mindset, there is no detectable correlation between the students’ mindsets and their course grades. An ordinal logistic regression estimates, at the 95 % confidence level, a statistically nonsignific…
Quasisymmetric extension on the real line
2015
We give a geometric characterization of the sets $E\subset \mathbb{R}$ that satisfy the following property: every quasisymmetric embedding $f: E \to \mathbb{R}^n$ extends to a quasisymmetric embedding $f:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}^N$ for some $N\geq n$.
Critical Path Analysis with Imprecise Activities Times
2018
The aim of the paper is to present the conceptual framework related to critical path analysis with imprecise activity duration times. This article is motivated by the fact that most approaches to project planning are deterministic. In reality, the problem is accompanied by uncertainty and risk associated with dealing with imprecise data. Taking this uncertainty into account when performing analyses and calculations not only helps to better project planning, but also to expand the applicability of project scheduling methods under real-life or uncertain conditions. The major contribution of this paper is the development of a novel approach to critical path analysis in the presence of uncertai…
Some results on generalized coherence of conditional probability bounds
2003
Based on the coherence principle of de Finetti and a related notion of generalized coherence (g-coherence), we adopt a probabilistic approach to uncertainty based on conditional probability bounds. Our notion of g-coherence is equivalent to the 'avoiding uniform loss' property for lower and upper probabilities (a la Walley). Moreover, given a g-coherent imprecise assessment by our algorithms we can correct it obtaining the associated coherent assessment (in the sense of Walley and Williams). As is well known, the problems of checking g-coherence and propagating tight g-coherent intervals are NP and FP^NP complete, respectively, and thus NP-hard. Two notions which may be helpful to reduce co…
Latency-Oblivious Distributed Task Scheduling for Mobile Edge Computing
2018
Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) is emerging as one of the effective platforms for offloading the resource- and latency-constrained computational services of modern mobile applications. For latency- and resource-constrained mobile devices, the important issues include: 1) minimize end-to-end service latency; 2) minimize service completion time; 3) high quality-of-service (QoS) requirement to offload the complex computational services. To address the above issues, a latencyoblivious distributed task scheduling scheme is designed in this work to maximize the QoS performance and goodput for the MEC services. Unlike most of the existing works, we consider the latency-oblivious property of different …

Memory-Efficient Sliding Window Progressive Meshes
2007
Progressive mesh is a data structure that encodes a continuous spectrum of mesh approximations. Sliding window progressive meshes (SWPM) minimize data transfers between CPU and GPU by storing mesh data in static on-GPU memory buffers [For01]. The main disadvantages of the original SWPM algorithm are poor vertex cache usage efficiency, and big resulting datasets. Connectivity-based algorithm [KT04] achieves a good vertex cache coherence but it does not address the problem of high memory utilization. In this paper, we describe estimates for the size of memory buffers, and describe methods to reduce the index datasets. We achieve 20% reduction due to the use hierarchical data structures (clust…
Valeur boursière versus valeur comptable
2011
Intellectual Capital – The Key for Sustainable Competitive Advantage for the SME's Sector
2015
Abstract With the adoption of the Lisbon Agenda and its major objective, namely that the EU would become the most dynamic and competitive knowledge based economy in the world, it became clear the Small and Medium Enterprises (SME's) are the especially affected by these plans, because they represent the driving force for the European economy. In this context of creating and maintaining a competitive advantage for the SME's, it is crucial for them to make good use of the intellectual capital of their employees, in an efficient and proficient manner, in order to increase their potential for innovation. The aim of this article is to show, through an original argumentation, based on the analysis…
Family business internationalization opportunities and obstacles from an entrepreneur's perspective : a case study of the creative industry
2011
The purpose of this study is to analyze how the internationalization process of a family business in the creative industry can be promoted in Finland. The context of the thesis consists of family business and creative industry and the phenomenon investigated is the internationalization process and its services thus constituting the theoretical part of the study. The study is trying to find an answer to the primary question: How can the internationalization process of a family business be promoted in Finland? A qualitative case study was chosen as a research method since the empirical data consists of two separate case studies in the creative industry. This case study has a narrative approac…
