The paper concerns an in-depth study of a special connection for steel structures and the formulation of the related optimal design problem. The connection is called Limited Resistance Rigid Perfectly Plastic Hinge (LRPH) and it represents an innovative device devoted to join steel beam elements of frame structures. The device consists in a sequence of steel cross sections constituted by two parallel flanges with suitably different thickness connected by as many webs with constant and equal thickness. The tensile strength of brittle fibres is routinely described by the Weibull distribution. The parameters of the distribution can be obtained from tests on single fibres and fibre bundles or from model composite tests. However, there is growing evidence that the distribution parameters obtained by different experimental techniques differ systematically. Monitoring of Cell Layer Integrity with a Current-Driven Organic Electrochemical Transistor

Abstract The integrity of CaCo-2 cell barriers is investigated by organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) in a current-driven configuration. Ion transport through cellular barriers via the paracellular pathway is modulated by tight junctions between adjacent cells. Rupturing its integrity by H2O2 is monitored by the change of the output voltage in the transfer characteristics. It is demonstrated that by operating the OECT in a current-driven configuration, the sensitive and temporal resolution for monitoring the cell barrier integrity is strongly enhanced as compared to the OECT transient response measurement. Abstract The goal of this study is to experimentally and analytically evaluate the influence of circular openings in reinforced concrete deep beams with low shear span-to-depth ratio. Twenty reinforced concrete small-scale deep beams with or without openings were tested in flexure under four-point loading. The beams had a small shear span-to-depth ratio in order to stress the shear behavior. The specimens had different reinforcement arrangements and opening positions. Abstract The compressive behavior of lightweight fiber reinforced concrete confined with transverse reinforcement consisting of steel stirrups or spirals was analyzed. Pumice stone and expanded clay aggregates were utilized to decrease the weight of the composite; hooked steel fibers were also added. The investigation was carried out by testing cylindrical and prismatic specimens of different sizes in compression using an open-loop displacement control machine, recording the full load–deformation curves. Experimental investigation on compressive behavior of bottle-shaped struts

The goal of this investigation was the experimental verification of the dispersion of compression in bottle-shaped struts. Two typical bottle shapes were generated under load in compression concrete—both drilled and undrilled—and were reinforced concrete prismatic members with loading steel plate having a reduced area with respect to the entire cross section of the members. Sensitivity analysis for optimal shape design problems

Various methods for performing the sensitivity analysis in solving optimal shape design problems are outlined. The methods are illustrated in detail in the finite setting of a unilateral boundary value problem of the Dirichlet-Signorini type. The methods are compared in several numerical examples.
Multidisciplinary shape optimization in aerodynamics and electromagnetics using genetic algorithms

SUMMARY A multiobjective multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) of two-dimensional airfoil is presented. In this paper, an approximation for the Pareto set of optimal solutions is obtained by using a genetic algorithm (GA). The first objective function is the drag coefficient. As a constraint it is required that the lift coefficient is above a given value. The CFD analysis solver is based on the finite volume discretization of the inviscid Euler equations.
