BeppoSAX observation of 4U 1907+09: Detection of a cyclotron line and its second harmonic

Abstract We report the detection of a cyclotron absorption line and its second harmonic in the average spectrum of the high mass X-ray binary 4U1907+09 observed by the BeppoSAX satellite. The broad band spectral capability of BeppoSAX allowed a good determination of the continuum against which the two absorption features are evident at ∼ 19 and ∼ 39 keV. Correcting for the gravitational redshift of a ∼ 1.4 M⊙ neutron star, the inferred surface magnetic field strength is Bsurf = 2.1 × 1012 G.

VSOP monitoring of the quasar 1928+738

Abstract In the paper we describe the first results from a campaign to monitor the relatively low redshift (z=0.3) circumpolar superluminal quasar 1928+738 with VSOP. The three epochs of data that we have analyzed show that there have been substantial structural changes in this source near the core on the time-scale of a few months.

Parallel Calculation of CCSD and CCSD(T) Analytic First and Second Derivatives.

In this paper we present a parallel adaptation of a highly efficient coupled-cluster algorithm for calculating coupled-cluster singles and doubles (CCSD) and coupled-cluster singles and doubles augmented by a perturbative treatment of triple excitations (CCSD(T)) energies, gradients, and, for the first time, analytic second derivatives. A minimal-effort strategy is outlined that leads to an amplitude-replicated, communication-minimized implementation by parallelizing the time-determining steps for CCSD and CCSD(T). Manakov Polarization Modulation Instability in Normal Dispersion Optical Fiber

We observed polarization modulation instability in the normal dispersion regime of randomly birefringent multi-km telecom optical fiber. The instability is pumped by two wavelength multiplexed and orthogonally polarized intense continuous lasers.

A tale of two GRB-SNe at a common redshift of z=0.54

We present ground-based and HST optical observations of the optical transients (OTs) of long-duration Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) 060729 and 090618, both at a redshift of z = 0.54. For GRB 060729, bumps are seen in the optical light curves (LCs), and the late-time broadband spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the OT resemble those of local type Ic supernovae (SNe). For GRB 090618, the dense sampling of our optical observations has allowed us to detect well-defined bumps in the optical LCs, as well as a change in colour, that are indicative of light coming from a core-collapse SN. Type Ia Supernovae (SNeIa) used as standardizable candles have been instrumental in the discovery of cosmic acceleration, usually attributed to some form of dark energy (DE). Recent studies have raised the issue of whether intrinsic SNeIa luminosities might evolve with redshift. While the evidence for cosmic acceleration is robust to this possible systematic, the question remains of how much the latter can affect the inferred properties of the DE component responsible for cosmic acceleration. The Evolution of the Rest-frame V-band Luminosity Function from z=4: A Constant Faint-end Slope over the Last 12 Gyr of Cosmic History

We present the rest-frame V-band luminosity function (LF) of galaxies at 0.4<z<4.0, measured from a near-infrared selected sample constructed from the NMBS, the FIRES, the FIREWORKS, and the ultra-deep NICMOS and WFC3 observations in the HDFN, HUDF, and GOODS-CDFS, all having high-quality optical to mid-infrared data. This unique sample combines data from surveys with a large range of depths and areas in a self-consistent way, allowing us to (1) minimize the uncertainties due to cosmic variance; and (2) simultaneously constrain the bright and faint ends with unprecedented accuracy over the targeted redshift range, probing the LF down to 0.1 L* at z~3.9. The Large-Scale Structure in the Universe: From Power Laws to Acoustic Peaks

The most popular tools for analysing the large scale distribution of galaxies are second-order spatial statistics such as the two-point correlation function or its Fourier transform, the power spectrum. In this review, we explain how our knowledge of cosmic structures, encapsulated by these statistical descriptors, has evolved since their first use when applied on the early galaxy catalogues to the present generation of wide and deep redshift surveys, incorporating the most challenging discovery in the study of the galaxy distribution: the detection of Baryon Acoustic Oscillations.

Neutrino signatures on the high-transmission regions of the Lyman $\boldsymbol {\alpha }$ forest

We quantify the impact of massive neutrinos on the statistics of low density regions in the intergalactic medium (IGM) as probed by the Lyman-� forest at redshifts z = 2.2– 4. Based on mock but realistic quasar (QSO) spectra extracted from hydrodynamic simulations with cold dark matter, baryons and neutrinos, we find that the probability distribution of weak Lyman-� absorption features, as sampled by Lyman-� flux regions at high transmissivity, is strongly affected by the presence of massive neutrinos.
