Diagnostic problems and postnatal follow-up in congenital toxoplasmosis

2007

Aim. In order to assess the consequences of different clinica] approaches in the prenata] management of congenital toxoplasmosis, we retrospectively reviewed 58 pregnant women with Toxoplasma seroconversion and prospec tively enrolled their 59 infants, referred to us from 1999 to 2004. Metbods. Data on clinica!, laboratocy and de mographic characteristics of the pregnant women were collected. Their children were entered intoa 48-month follow-up progcamme in which clinica , instrumental, ophthalmo logic and serologic evaluations were carried out at birth, at 1, 3, 6, 9, 15, 18, 24, 36 and at 48 months of life. Paediatric treatment with Spiramycin alone or alternated with Pyrime thamine-S…

[Herpes Zoster and its prevention in Italy. Scientific consensus statement].

2014

In this paper, an Italian group of experts presents a revision of the available data about epidemiology and prevention of Herpes Zoster (HZ). HZ is an acute viral diseases caused by the reactivation of Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV). HZ is characterized by neurological and dermatological symptoms with a dermatomeric localization. The reactivation of the virus from the latent status in the sensitive ganglia increases with age and failing cell mediated immunity. In Europe, more than 95% of adults presents antibodies against VZV. Incidence of HZ is similar all over the world, related to the age of the population: from 2-3/1000 persons/year in the age group 20 to 50 years to 5/1000 in the 60 year…

Prevalence and distribution of oral mucosal non-malignant lesions in the western Sicilian population.

2016

BACKGROUNG: The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of oral mucosal non-malignant lesions in the Sicilian population. In addition, we evaluated the association between each oral lesion and its risk factors. METHODS: This study analyzed a total of 2539 consecutive patients, attending the Department of Surgical, Oncological and Stomatological Disciplines of Palermo University, who were examined for the presence of various oral lesions during the period from January 2012 and February 2015. RESULTS: The sample consisted of 1330 (52%) female and 1209 (48%) male. The age ranged from 13-86 years with a mean age of 47.16 years. Among these subjects 1495 (58%), presented one or …

The metabolic syndrome predicts cardiovascular events in subjects with normal fasting glucose: results of a 15 years follow-up in a Mediterranean pop…

2006

The aim of this study was to evaluate the cardiovascular (CV) risk due to the metabolic syndrome in a 15-year prospective study of a Sicilian population. In the Mediterranean area obesity is highly prevalent, but epidemiological data on the metabolic syndrome are limited. Methods and results: Among the 1351 subjects enrolled in the “Ventimiglia di Sicilia” epidemiological project, we selected 687 subjects between 35 and 75 years of age; baseline parameters were assessed and subjects have been followed for 15 years recording CV events, total and cardiovascular mortality. The metabolic syndrome was defined according to both the Adult Treatment Panel III and the International Diabetes Federati…

Association of dietary patterns with insulin resistance and clinically silent carotid atherosclerosis in apparently healthy people

2013

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES:Dietary habits are important determinants of individual cardiovascular and metabolic risk. This study investigated the association between dietary patterns and asymptomatic carotid atherosclerosis, defined as the presence of plaques and/or increased intima-media thickness, and metabolic biomarkers of insulin resistance, including the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and the trygliceride/high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol (Tg/HDL) ratio in a cohort of adults without known diabetes or atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.SUBJECTS/METHODS:Nine hundred and twenty-nine randomly selected participants were cross-sectionally investigated. …

Self-Perceptions of Sicilian Male Youth

1972

An Italian version of the AVA was included in the test battery for a pilot study of Project Talent in Sicily. Ss were 395 male students attending a public technical school in Palermo, Sicily. Profiles of basic self and social self-concepts, as well as the composite self-concept yielded by the AVA, were analyzed for the Sicilian sample. The latter were also compared with those for an American normative sample ( N = 7732). Two heavily concentrated clusters were noted in the self-perceptions of the Sicilians in contrast to those of the American sample which are more evenly distributed throughout the personality spheroid comprising the AVA model.

Open prostatectomy for benign prostatic enlargement in southern Europe in the late 1990s: A contemporary series of 1800 interventions

2002

Abstract Objectives Contemporary series of open prostatectomies from Western countries are rare. Frequently, the analysis of the outcome of open prostatectomy refers to old experiences or to series from developing countries. Any comparison with transurethral resection of the prostate can be invalidated by complications of open surgery because of the lack of an adequate healthcare system and technology. Methods The Sicilian-Calabrian Society of Urology performed a retrospective study to assess the surgical management of benign prostatic hyperplasia in Sicily and Calabria in 1997 and 1998. A three-page questionnaire was sent to the 36 urologic units of these two Italian regions with more than…

Association between C1019T polymorphism of connexin37 and acute myocardial infarction: a study in patients from Sicily

2003

Abstract During atherogenesis, a critical role is played by intercellular communication via gap junctions, cell membrane channels linking the cytoplasmic compartments of adjacent cells. The component protein subunits of these channels, called connexin (Cx), belong to a multigene family. Cx37 is involved in growth, regeneration after injury and ageing of the endothelial cells, suggesting its role in atherosclerosis. The C1019 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) of Cx37 gene was associated with thickening of the carotid intima in Swedish men and was also associated with coronary artery disease in a Taiwanese population. On the other hand, in two more recent studies performed in male Japanese…

Prevalence of late-onset 11 β-hydroxylase-deficiency in hirsute patients

1988

Serum levels of 11-deoxycortisol were determined in 182 hirsute women. Three patients presented high basal 11-deoxycortisol levels and an exaggerated response of this steroid to ACTH stimulation. A fourth patient had normal basal 11-deoxycortisol but was hyperresponsive to ACTH stimulation. Therefore diagnosis of late-onset 11 beta-hydroxylase deficiency was made in 4 out of 182 hirsute women with a prevalence of 2.2% in the group studied. In these patients, clinical findings and other hormonal patterns were not different from those of other women suffering from hirsutism.

Human herpesvirus type 8 DNA sequences in biological samples of HIV-positive and negative individuals in Sicily.

1997

Objective: To evaluate the circulation of a new human herpesvirus (HHV), HHV-8 or Kaposi's sarcoma (KS)-associated herpesvirus in a geographical area where a high incidence rate of classical KS was already present before the appearance of the AIDS epidemic. Design and methods: The study was carried out by analysing: (i) bioptic samples from classic, AIDS-associated KS, and controls; (ii) peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from classic KS, HIV-positive subjects with and without KS and healthy HIV-negative individuals; (iii) semen samples from heterosexual HIV-positive and HIV-negative individuals affected or not by KS; and (iv) cervical swabs from HIV-negative healthy heterosexual fem…
