Life Cycle Energy Consumption and Carbon Dioxide Emissions of Agricultural Residue Feedstock for Bioenergy

2021

The depletion of fossil fuels and climate change concerns are drivers for the development and expansion of bioenergy. Promoting biomass is vital to move civilization toward a low-carbon economy. To meet European Union targets, it is required to increase the use of agricultural residues (including straw) for power generation. Using agricultural residues without accounting for their energy consumed and carbon dioxide emissions distorts the energy and environmental balance, and their analysis is the purpose of this study. In this paper, a life cycle analysis method is applied. The allocation of carbon dioxide emissions and energy inputs in the crop production by allocating between a product (g…

Analysis of uncontrolled phosphorus precipitation in anaerobic digesters under thermophilic and mesophilic conditions.

2019

This study compares the operation of mesophilic and thermophilic anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge and their effects in uncontrolled phosphorus precipitation. The research has been carried out using a pilot plant consisting of two digesters of 1.6 m3 working volume, treating the mixed sludge of Alzira WWTP (Valencia, Spain). The digesters were operated in parallel, at different conditions: mesophilic (38 ± 2.0°C) and thermophilic (55 ± 2.5°C) temperatures and organic loading rates (OLR) ranging from 1.1 to 1.7 kg volatile solids (VS) m−3 d−1 and different hydraulic retention times (HRT) 20, 15 and 12 days. Uncontrolled precipitation was evaluated through P, Mg and Ca mass balances in bot…

Decentralized Adaptive Control for Interconnected Nonlinear Systems with Input Quantization

2017

Abstract In this paper, a decentralized adaptive control scheme is proposed for a class of uncertain nonlinear interconnected systems with input quantization. A hysteresis uniform quantization is introduced to reduce chattering. In the control design, a smooth function is introduced with backstepping technique to compensate for the effects of interactions. It is shown that the proposed decentralized adaptive controllers can ensure global boundedness of all the signals in the closed-loop interconnected systems and the tracking errors of subsystem converge to a residual, which can be adjusted by choosing suitable design parameters. Simulation results illustrate the effectiveness of the propos…

Model-Free Sliding-Mode-Based Detection and Estimation of Backlash in Drives With Single Encoder

2021

Backlash is a frequently encountered problem for various drives, especially those equipped with a single encoder onside of the controlled actuator. This brief proposes a sliding-mode differentiator-based estimation of unknown backlash size while measuring the actuator displacement only. Neither actuator nor load dynamics are explicitly known, while a principal second-order actuator behavior is assumed. We make use of the different perturbation dynamics distinctive for different backlash modes and an unbounded impulse-type perturbation at impact. The latter leads to transient loss of the sliding-mode and allows for detecting an isolated time instant of the backlash occurrence. The proposed m…

A methodology for evaluating the flexibility potential of domestic air-conditioning systems

2020

The paper presents a methodology for quantifying the electrical flexibility potential of air-conditioning systems (ACS) installed in residential buildings according to the building envelope characteristics and the ACS performance. In order to provide a thorough analysis of the issue, the ACS baseline consumption referred to the indoor temperature of 24°C has been computed for three typical residential buildings built in the South of Italy over different periods. The baseline consumption was used as a reference to estimate the effect of the set point temperature change on the ACS power profile. The results showed that increasing the set-point temperature of ACS by 2°C and 4°C leads to a redu…

Effect of the mutual position between weld seam and reinforcement on the residual stress distribution in Friction Stir Welding of AA6082 skin and str…

2016

Abstract In the paper, a numerical and experimental study was carried out to highlight the effect of the distance d between the weld seam and the reinforcement on the residual stress distribution in Friction Stir Welded AA6082-T6 structures. An L-shaped profile was welded to a sheet metal with varying tool rotation and distance d from the weld seam. The Cut Compliance method was used to determine the resulting longitudinal residual stress. A dedicated FE model for FSW was set up, validated and utilized to predict the longitudinal residual stress in the assembled part. The analysis allowed the identification of a few design guidelines in order to reduce the detrimental effects of the residua…

Fault detection for nonlinear networked systems based on quantization and dropout compensation: An interval type-2 fuzzy-model method

2016

Abstract This paper investigates the problem of filter-based fault detection for a class of nonlinear networked systems subject to parameter uncertainties in the framework of the interval type-2 (IT2) T–S fuzzy model-based approach. The Bernoulli random distribution process and logarithm quantizer are used to describe the measurement loss and signals quantization, respectively. In the framework of the IT2 T–S fuzzy model, the parameter uncertainty is handled by the membership functions with lower and upper bounds. A novel IT2 fault detection filter is designed to guarantee the residual system to be stochastically stable and satisfy the predefined H ∞ performance. It should be mentioned that…

Residual stress measurement in innovative friction stir welding processes

2017

In recent years, important innovations have been introduced in Friction Stir Welding (FSW) technology such as, for example, the Laser assisted Friction Stir Welding (LFSW) and in-process Cooled Friction Stir Welding (CFSW). Residual stresses have a fundamental role in welded structures because they affect the way to design the structures, fatigue life, corrosion resistance and many other material properties. Consequently, it is important to investigate the residual stress distribution in FSW where, though the heat input is lower compared to traditional welding techniques, the constraints applied to the parts to weld are more severe. The aim of the present work is to verify the capabilities …

Improving surface integrity of additively manufactured GP1 stainless steel by roller burnishing

2020

Abstract Additive manufacturing can rapidly fabricate the desired components by selectively melting and solidifying feedstock, rather than conventional subtractive machining. However, the difference between the two routes in terms of surface integrity of the final component is relevant. This paper presents a strategy to control the surface characteristics of additively manufactured stainless steel by roller burnishing. In particular, process parameters have been carefully selected to improve the surface integrity of the worked material. The quality of the surface has been analyzed in terms of roughness, hardness, microstructure and residual stresses. The overall product endurance under high…

Friction Stir Welding of Ti6Al4V complex geometries for aeronautical applications: a feasibility study

2020

Abstract While Friction Stir Welding (FSW) of aluminium alloys can be considered a mature technology, even for complex joint morphologies, as T joints welded “in transparency”, welding of hard material still presents several open issues. In fact, welding of titanium alloys is a challenging process due to the chemical, mechanical and thermal characteristics of such materials which are subjected to atmosphere contamination resulting in joint hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen embrittlement; additionally, due to the high melting temperature, large distortion and residual stress are found in joints obtained by traditional fusion welding processes as gas metal arc welding, electron beam welding and l…
