Transgression as represented in Chuck Palahniuk's Fight Club
2017
Tutkielman tarkoituksena on selvittää, kuinka Fight Club romaanissa käsitellään transgressiivistä kaunokirjallisuutta. Tutkimuksessa hyödynnetään metodina lähilukutekniikkaa, jossa aineisto analysoidaan keskittyen transgressiivisiin teemoihin sekä narratiivisiin rakenteisiin. Tutkimuskysymyksenä on se, miten transgressiivisuus nousee esille Chuck Palahniukin Fight Club - romaanin kirjoitustyylissä. Analyysini jakautuu kolmeen osaan. Ensimmäisenä tarkastelen transgressiivisuutta Fight Clubin narratiivisissa rakenteissa. Tutkimuksessa käy ilmi, että transgressiivisuuden vaikutusta narratiivissa voidaan tarkastella tajunnanvirran, epäluotettavan kertojan ja epälineaarisuuden kautta, joihin vai…
Unified description of 2+_1 states within the deformed quasiparticle random-phase approximation
2013
We describe low-lying collective states in deformed even-even nuclei within a deformed quasiparticle randomphase approximation (dQRPA) by using a single-particle basis with good angular momentum. The statistical factors, accounting for the level occupancy, appear in the dQRPA in a natural way as rotation coefficients that take the intrinsic system to the laboratory system. We have used our model by performing a systematic analysis of E2 transitions from the first 2+ state to the ground state for all superfluid nuclei in the range 50 < Z 100 by using a common charge polarization parameter χ = 0.2. In spite of its similarity to the QRPA, this method is able to describe in an unified way gross…
Analysis of double-beta transitions in 78^Kr
2013
In this paper a comprehensive theoretical analysis of the two-neutrino (2ν2β) and neutrinoless (0ν2β) doublebeta decays of 78Kr is performed by evaluating the corresponding nuclear matrix elements by combining the quasiparticle random-phase approximation with the multiple-commutator model. Transitions to the ground state 0+ gs and 0+ and 2+ excited states in 78Se are investigated by using G-matrix-based nuclear forces. The channels β+β+, β+EC, and ECEC are discussed for the 2ν2β decays and the channels β+β+ and β+EC for the 0ν2β decays. The associated half-lives are computed to see if the detection of some of these transitions is experimentally feasible. peerReviewed
Neutrinoless double beta-plus/EC decays
2013
The relation of neutrino masses to neutrino oscillations and the nuclear double beta decay is highlighted. In particular, the neutrinoless 𝛽+ 𝛽+, 𝛽+EC, and resonant ECEC decays are investigated using microscopic nuclear models. Transitions to the ground state and excited 0+ states are analyzed. Systematics of the related nuclear matrix elements are studied and the present status of the resonant ECEC decays is reviewed. peerReviewed
Quark structure of the χc(3P) and X(4274) resonances and their strong and radiative decays
2020
We calculate the masses of χc(3P) states with threshold corrections in a coupled-channel model. The model was recently applied to the description of the properties of χc(2P) and χb(3P) multiplets (Ferretti and Santopinto in Phys Lett B 789:550, 2019]. We also compute the open-charm strong decay widths of the χc(3P) states and their radiative transitions. According to our predictions, the χc(3P) states should be dominated by the charmonium core, but they may also show small meson-meson components. The X(4274) is interpreted as a cc¯ χc1(3P) state. More information on the other members of the χc(3P) multiplet, as well as a more rigorous analysis of the X(4274)’s decay modes, are needed to pro…
Theoretical predictions of wimp-nucleus and neutrino-nucleus scattering in context of dark matter direct detection
2018
The nature of dark matter is at present an open question. Assuming the main component of dark matter consists of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), directly detecting such particle via a scattering process with an atomic nucleus would be a strong probe into properties of dark matter. So far direct detection experiments have not provided a conclusive signal of dark matter. Traditionally the experiments aim to detect a coherent, spin- independent, elastic scattering signal which is enhanced by the square of the nuclear mass number. If the coherent channel is for some reason suppressed for WIMP-nucleus interactions, then spin-dependent interactions become important. In this thesis w…
Where fatherlessness meets music therapy : "the importance of therapist & the uniqueness of music"
2014
A great number of studies are supporting father’s vital contribution in the well-being of their children. Fatherlessness, on the other hand, is something that more and more children are experiencing, growing up in a single-parent family. This, usually, has a number of negative consequences in children’s development (e.g. low self-esteem, loneliness, mistrust, distress,no life model). Music therapy offers an alternative way of dealing with the issue of fatherlessness. With music the therapeutic alliance is taking place faster and in a more pleasant way (making/listening to music). Moreover, trusting and the negative emotions can be first expressed and experienced within musical events -i.e. …
Quasiparticle properties of nonequilibrium gluon plasma
2018
We apply classical gluodynamics to early stages of ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. We start by giving a brief overview of QCD. Then we proceed to the space-time evolution of ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions in the color glass condensate framework and go through the basics of real-time gluodynamics on the lattice in the temporal gauge. We study the plasmon mass scale in three- and two-dimensional systems by comparing three different methods to measure the mass scale. The methods are a formula which can be derived from Hard Thermal Loop effective theory at leading order (HTL), the effective dispersion relation (DR) and measurement of the plasma oscillation frequency triggered by th…
Implementing the 3-omega technique for thermal conductivity measurements
2013
Thermal conductivity of the constituent materials is one of the most important properties affecting the performance of micro- and nanofabricated devices. These devices often make use of thin films with thicknesses ranging from some nanometers to few micrometers. The thermal conductivity of thin films can be measured with the three-omega method. In three-omega technique a metal wire acting as a resistive heater is microfabricated on the sample. Alternating current passing through the metal heater at a frequency ω heats the sample periodically and generates oscillations in the resistance of the metal line at a frequency 2ω. The oscillating resistance component is coupled with the driving curr…
Impact of traditional physics lab instruction on students’ critical thinking skills in a Finnish context
2023
Abstract Recent studies have given incentives to physics departments around the world to revise the learning goals of their lab courses to emphasize experimentation skills over reinforcing lecture content. Evaluation instruments have been developed to measure the achievement of learning goals, and one such instrument is the Physics Lab Inventory of Critical thinking (PLIC). The PLIC measures respondents’ ability to evaluate models, evaluate methods, and to suggest the next steps for an investigation. In the present work, we give consideration to the validity of our Finnish translation of the PLIC and we show results from our baseline study of first-year introductory lab courses with labs mi…
