Non-quadratic improved Hessian PDF reweighting and application to CMS dijet measurements at 5.02 TeV

2019

Hessian PDF reweighting, or "profiling", has become a widely used way to study the impact of a new data set on parton distribution functions (PDFs) with Hessian error sets. The available implementations of this method have resorted to a perfectly quadratic approximation of the initial $\chi^2$ function before inclusion of the new data. We demonstrate how one can take into account the first non-quadratic components of the original fit in the reweighting, provided that the necessary information is available. We then apply this method to the CMS measurement of dijet pseudorapidity spectra in proton-proton (pp) and proton-lead (pPb) collisions at 5.02 TeV. The measured pp dijet spectra disagree…

Can we fit nuclear PDFs with the high-x CLAS data?

2020

AbstractNuclear parton distribution functions (nuclear PDFs) are non-perturbative objects that encode the partonic behaviour of bound nucleons. To avoid potential higher-twist contributions, the data probing the high-x end of nuclear PDFs are sometimes left out from the global extractions despite their potential to constrain the fit parameters. In the present work we focus on the kinematic corner covered by the new high-x data measured by the CLAS/JLab collaboration. By using the Hessian re-weighting technique, we are able to quantitatively test the compatibility of these data with globally analyzed nuclear PDFs and explore the expected impact on the valence-quark distributions at high x. W…

Impact of CMS dijets in 5.02 TeV pPb and pp collisions on EPPS16 nuclear PDFs

2018

The CMS measurement of dijet pseudorapidity distributions in pPb versus pp collisions at 5.02 TeV provides a direct probe on nuclear gluon PDFs. We show that while the predicted pPb pseudorapidity distributions suffer from sizable free-proton PDF uncertainties, the ratios of the pPb and pp distributions are practically insensitive to scale and free-proton PDF choices. We find the CMS data on pPb to pp ratios to be in good agreement with the EPPS16 nuclear modifications. Using a non-quadratic extension of the Hessian PDF reweighting method, we study the impact of these data on the EPPS16 nuclear PDFs. Relative to EPPS16, we find stronger evidence for mid-x gluon antishadowing as well as indi…

Fly-and-Forage Strategy in the Bat Pipistrellus nathusii During Autumn Migration

2012

Populations of Pipistrellus nathusii (Nathusius's bat), an insectivorous aerial-hawking species that breeds in north-eastern Europe, perform long-distance migrations between breeding sites and hibernation areas in central and southern Europe. The feeding strategy of migrating P. nathusii was investigated in Latvia on the east coast of the Baltic Sea, exploring evidence for and against two non-mutually exclusive predictions that i) the bats feed shortly after dusk at highest aerial insect activity and continue to migrate thereafter or ii) apply a ‘fly-and-forage’ strategy and frequently interrupt their migration flight to feed. Echolocation calls and feeding buzzes of P. nathusii were record…

Higgs mass predicted from the standard model with asymptotically safe gravity

2016

Tässä Pro Gradu -tutkielmassa tavoitteena on ennustaa Higgsin bosonin massa ottaen lähtökohdaksi hiukkasfysiikan standardimalli, johon on kytketty gravitaatio ns. asymptoottisesti turvallisena teoriana. Ennusteen laskemiseksi selvitetään Higgsin bosonin itseiskytkennän ja neljän muun standardimallin kytkinvakion juokseminen, eli kytkinvakioiden käyttäytyminen energiaskaalan funktiona, johtavassa kertaluvussa MS-skeemassa. Standardimallista saatuihin β-funktioihin lisätään asymptoottisesti turvallisen gravitaation antamat korjaukset suurilla energiaskaaloilla, jonka jälkeen β-funktioiden muodostama differentiaaliyhtälöryhmä ratkaistaan numeerisesti. Pythia 8 as hadronic interaction model in air shower simulations

2023

Hadronic interaction models are a core ingredient of simulations of extensive air showers and pose the major source of uncertainties of predictions of air shower observables. Recently, Pythia~8, a hadronic interaction model popular in accelerator-based high-energy physics, became usable in air shower simulations as well. We have integrated Pythia~8 with its new capabilities into the air shower simulation framework CORSIKA~8. First results show significantly shallower shower development, which we attribute to higher cross-section predictions by the new simplified nuclear model of Pythia.

Energy dependence of ϕ meson production at forward rapidity in pp collisions at the LHC

2021

The production of $ϕ$ mesons has been studied in pp collisions at LHC energies with the ALICE detector via the dimuon decay channel in the rapidity region $2.5 < y < 4$. Measurements of the differential cross section ${\rm d}^2σ/{\rm d}y {\rm d}p_{\rm T}$ are presented as a function of the transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) at the center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s}=5.02$, 8 and 13 TeV and compared with the ALICE results at midrapidity. The differential cross sections at $\sqrt{s}=5.02$ and 13 TeV are also studied in several rapidity intervals as a function of $p_{\rm T}$, and as a function of rapidity in three $p_{\rm T}$ intervals. A hardening of the $p_{\rm T}$-differential cross sect…

Numerical evaluation of the nonlinear Gribov-Levin-Ryskin-Mueller-Qiu evolution equations for nuclear parton distribution functions

2023

We numerically study for the first time the nonlinear GLR-MQ evolution equations for nuclear parton distribution function (nPDFs) to next-to-leading order accuracy and quantify the impact of gluon recombination at small $x$. Using the nCTEQ15 nPDFs as input, we confirm the importance of the nonlinear corrections for small $x \lesssim 10^{-3}$, whose magnitude increases with a decrease of $x$ and an increase of the atomic number $A$. We find that at $x=10^{-5}$ and for heavy nuclei, after the upward evolution from $Q_0=2$ GeV to $Q=10$ GeV, the quark singlet $\Omega(x,Q^2)$ and the gluon $G(x,Q^2)$ distributions become reduced by $9-15$%, respectively. The relative effect is much stronger fo…

NNLO nuclear parton distribution functions with electroweak-boson production data from the LHC

2022

We present new sets of nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs) at next-to-leading order and next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD. Our analyses are based on deeply inelastic scattering data with charged-lepton and neutrino beams on nuclear targets, and experimental data from measurements of $W^{\pm},\,Z$ boson production in p+Pb collisions at the LHC. In addition, a set of proton baseline PDFs is fitted within the same framework and with the same theoretical assumptions. The results of our global QCD analysis are compared to existing nPDF sets and to the previous nPDF set TUJU19 which was based on DIS data only. Our work is performed using an open-source tool, xFitter, and…
