Hindrances to recognition in Finnish music schools

2021

This article examines recognition relations between students and teachers in Finnish music schools. The research is based on written texts by music school students. The texts are analysed for difficulties in recognition relations, namely, hindrances to recognition in music schools. In the texts, some of the respondents describe situations that can be analysed as hindrances to recognition. The author analyses four different types of recognition-related problems in the data, the main issue being a tension between caring for people (respecting them) and promoting musical values (emphasising esteem). In addition to discerning problems, the article attempts to alleviate this tension. This might…

Inbreeding does not alter the response to an experimental heat wave in a freshwater snail

2019

Global climate change affects natural populations of many species by increasing the average temperature and the frequency of extreme weather events (e.g. summer heat waves). The ability of organisms to cope with these environmental changes can, however, depend on their genetic properties. For instance, genetic load owing to inbreeding could alter organisms’ responses to climate change-mediated environmental changes but such effects are often overlooked. We investigated the effects of an experimental heat wave (25°C versus 15°C) on life history (reproduction, size) and constitutive immune defence traits (phenoloxidase-like and antibacterial activity of haemolymph) in relation to inbreeding b…

An immigrant mother’s thoughts on the use of Finnish in English workbooks

2018

I moved to Finland with my family three and a half years ago from Hungary. My older son (aged 11 then) spent a year in a Finnish preparatory class before he continued his studies in the 5th grade. He chose English as his A1 language because he had learnt it for three years in a Hungarian school. Despite his knowledge, the English home assignments proved to be very difficult for him to solve. The activity book relied greatly on the majority language: the instructions and many of the exercises required Finnish knowledge. We spent a lot of time using an electronic dictionary to do the English homework together. Finnish skills were needed even in the English language tests that he had to take, …

Neutron-Induced Effects on a Self-Refresh DRAM

2022

International audience; The field of radiation effects in electronics research includes unknowns for every new device, node size, and technical development. In this study, static and dynamic test methods were used to define the response of a self-refresh DRAM under neutron irradiation. The neutron-induced effects were investigated and characterised by event cross sections, soft-error rate, and bitmaps evaluations, leading to an identification of permanent and temporary stuck cells, single-bit upsets, and block errors. Block errors were identified in different patterns with dependency in the addressing order, leading to up to two thousand faulty words per event, representing a real threat fr…

Musiikkiterapeutti yksityisenä yrittäjänä ja Kelan lääkinnällisen kuntoutuksen palveluntuottajana

2015

Kyselytutkimukseen osallistui 66 Kelan palveluntuottajahaun kautta tavoitettua musiikkiterapeuttia. Kerättyä kyselytutkimuksen aineistoa analysoitiin tilastollisin menetelmin SPPS Sta…

The individualized music therapy assessment profile as an initial assessment tool of social emotional functioning

2012

An assessment in music therapy clinical practice is an essential part of the therapy process.Based on the assessment the therapist is able to recognize the needs of the client and plan the influential interventions in the therapy. A music therapy assessment evaluates a client´s individual strengths and weakness in both musical and non-musical areas. Many of the music therapy assessment tools have been created for a specific population, not as a comprehensive music therapy assessment tool. The IMTAP is one of the first comprehensive assessment instruments addressing a variety of diagnoses. It has been developed by a team of experienced music therapists in Music Therapy Wellness Clinic at Cal…

Shell-Structure and Pairing Interaction in Superheavy Nuclei: Rotational Properties of the Z=104 Nucleus (256)Rf

2012

The rotational band structure of the Z ¼ 104 nucleus 256Rf has been observed up to a tentative spin of 20@ using state-of-the-art -ray spectroscopic techniques. This represents the first such measurement in a superheavy nucleus whose stability is entirely derived from the shell-correction energy. The observed rotational properties are compared to those of neighboring nuclei and it is shown that the kinematic and dynamic moments of inertia are sensitive to the underlying single-particle shell structure and the specific location of high-j orbitals. The moments of inertia therefore provide a sensitive test of shell structure and pairing in superheavy nuclei which is essential to ensure the val…

Correlating Schiff Moments in the Light Actinides with Octupole Moments

2018

We show that the measured intrinsic octupole moments of $^{220}$Rn, $^{224}$Ra, and $^{226}$Ra constrain the intrinsic Schiff moments of $^{225}$Ra$^{221}$Rn, $^{223}$Rn, $^{223}$Fr, $^{225}$Ra, and $^{229}$Pa. The result is a dramatically reduced uncertainty in intrinsic Schiff moments. Direct measurements of octupole moments in odd nuclei will reduce the uncertainty even more. The only significant source of nuclear-physics error in the laboratory Schiff moments will then be the intrinsic matrix elements of the time-reversal non-invariant interaction produced by CP-violating fundamental physics. Those matrix elements are also correlated with octupole moments, but with a larger systematic u…

Regulating pre-performance psychobiosocial states with music

2016

The present study aimed to investigate the effects of music on swimmers’ pre-performance psychobiosocial states. We involved a purposeful sample of competitive swimmers (N = 17) in a 5-week intervention grounded in the individual zones of optimal functional (IZOF) model. Multiple findings were revealed. The first showed that pre-performance psychobiosocial states were predictive of subsequent performance. This was revealed by a high number of significant differences found between best and worst performance across modalities. Second, swimmers improved their ability to regulate pre-performance states through the use of music. This was shown through evidence that no significant differences wer…

Building Worlds Together with Sound and Music : Imagination as an Active Engagement between Ourselves

2019

By conforming to the enactive approach to human cognition, and by adopting the Tia DeNora’s concept of human–music interaction as an “in-action” perspective, Kai Tuuri and Henna-Riikka Peltola explore socially extended imagining with sounds and music. This is done through a question of how “shared places” of imagining with sound are established and maintained. Defining the activity of imagining as an essentially dynamic and generative process that takes place in a social reality, the authors propose that the processes of imagining are not only individual but also become exhibited and jointly engaged in social dialogues as well. By first discussing the theoretical foundations of this shared …
