Kompakti automatisoitu laser-ionisointijärjestelmä
2011
In an experimental nuclear physics off-line systems are often used in situations where acceleration energies are relatively small. Main benefits are low price and meager radiated laboratory enviroments. In this master’s thesis I discuss mostly about automation which was used in our off-line system. The system was built at the Ion Guide Separator On-Line facility (IGISOL) in Jyväskylä University. The automation set up was made with the Phoenix Contacts inline terminals, which were programmed by using the Labview program. The system consists of thermistor, skimmer handling, mirror handling, gasline parts per billion (ppb) mixing and quadrupole mass spectrometer measurement. There were major p…
Upgrade of ALICE forward detectors
2019
ALICE will upgrade its subsystems in 2019−2020 to fully benefit from the increased collision rate and luminosity of the LHC at CERN. Two new forward detectors will be installed at the core of ALICE: the Fast Interaction Trigger (FIT) and the Muon Forward Tracker (MFT). Additionally, during the shutdown between Run 3 and Run 4, there will be an opportunity to install the Forward Calorimeter (FoCal). This paper describes these new forward detectors, their physics justification and goals, selected design features along with performance of detector prototypes and simulated performance figures. peerReviewed
RAPTOR : A new collinear laser ionization spectroscopy and laser-radiofrequency double-resonance experiment at the IGISOL facility
2023
RAPTOR, Resonance ionization spectroscopy And Purification Traps for Optimized spectRoscopy, is a new collinear resonance ionization spectroscopy device constructed at the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line (IGISOL) facility at the University of Jyv\"askyl\"a, Finland. By operating at beam energies of under 10 keV, the footprint of the experiment is reduced compared to more traditional collinear laser spectroscopy beamlines. In addition, RAPTOR is coupled to the JYFLTRAP Penning trap mass spectrometer, opening a window to laser-assisted nuclear-state selective purification, serving not only the mass measurement program, but also supporting post-trap decay spectroscopy experiments. Finally,…
Resonance laser ionization developments for IGISOL-4
2012
The work presented in this thesis concentrates on the development of the FURIOS laser ion source towards e cient and selective production of low energy radioactive ion beams. This includes design and development of the ion guide and hot cavity catcher systems for laser ion source use, and the development of in-source and in-jet laser spectroscopy techniques. The work has been carried out at the IGISOL facility in the Accelerator laboratory of the University of Jyväskylä. The FURIOS facility was upgraded and developed during the move to the IGISOL-4 facility. The laser transport was greatly improved in order to allow a large fraction of the initial laser intensity to be transported into the …
Accessing the gluonic structure of light nuclei at a future electron-ion collider
2020
We show how exclusive vector meson production off light ions can be used to probe the spatial distribution of small-$x$ gluons in the deuteron and $^3$He wave functions. In particular, we demonstrate how short range repulsive nucleon-nucleon interactions affect the predicted coherent $J/\Psi$ production spectra. Fluctuations of the nucleon substructure are shown to have a significant effect on the incoherent cross section above $|t|\gtrsim 0.2\,\mathrm{GeV}^2$. By explicitly performing the JIMWLK evolution, we predict the $x$-dependence of coherent and incoherent cross sections in the EIC energy range. Besides the increase of the average size of the nucleus with decreasing $x$, both the gro…
Immunological priming in the wood tiger moth (Parasemia plantaginis)
2014
Not a footprint to be seen: isolation in the interplay between words, music and image in two Dutch-language dubbed versions of ‘Let it go’
2019
Animated musical films, such as Disney’s Frozen, have long been immensely popular among the globe; however, the investigation of the songs of such films in a dubbing context constitutes a relatively new area of research. This paper compares the theme of isolation in one song from Frozen, ‘Let it go’, in the two Dutch-language dubbed versions released in, respectively, the Netherlands and Belgium. The triangle of aspects, an analytical model for animated musical films, is used to analyse the musical, visual, and verbal codes of ‘Let it go’ and categorise differences between the TTs and the ST. This model combines qualitative and quantitative data to compare different-language versions of son…
Music video covers, minoritised languages, and affective investments in the space of YouTube
2017
AbstractWhile interest in affective processes has led to an affective turn in cultural studies, in sociolinguistics this perspective has been given less attention. This study takes up the ‘lens of affect’ and directs it on two cases exemplifying the circulation of minoritised languages in new media spaces: music video covers from two minority-language contexts, Irish and Sámi, uploaded on YouTube. Combining recent theorising on affect with insights from sociolinguistic research, the study investigates how the YouTube users’ affective investments contribute to a (re)evaluation of the two minoritised languages, their speakers, and the related ethnic/national belongings, and how these investme…
Agent defocusing in two-participant clauses in Finnish Sign Language
2019
This article investigates what strategies are used for defocusing the agent in two-participant clauses in FinSL. The question is approached by analyzing a set of data that consists of videotaped informational texts. Several strategies for agent defocusing were found. First, the agent can simply be omitted. Second, the agent can be expressed with a pronominal pointing sign used non-referentially. Pronominal pointing signs that can be used non-referentially include at least the non-first person plural pronominal pointing sign and the first person singular pointing sign, possibly also the first person plural pointing sign. This study also suggests that constructed action is an additional, opti…
Explaining Hooke’s Law : Definitional Practices in a CLIL Physics Classroom
2016
This article examines how a teacher in a Content-and-Language-Integrated-Learning (CLIL) program engages in various definitional practices during a plenary episode in a physics class taught in English in Finland. The episode focuses on explaining Hooke’s law, which involves defining its key concepts and their relations as instructable matters. Using multimodal conversation analysis, the article shows how the teacher accomplishes definitions and definition-related actions through talk and a range of embodied and material resources. The different configurations of resources are coordinated to elucidate the key concepts, to contextualize them in relation to the larger activity, and to situate …
