Studies on displaced persons often suffer from a lack of data on the long-term effects of forced migration. A register created during 1960s and published as a book series ‘Siirtokarjalaisten tie’ in 1970 documented the lives of individuals who fled the southern Karelian district of Finland after its first and second occupation by the Soviet Union in 1940 and 1944. To realize the potential value of these data for scientific research, we have recently scanned the register using optical character recognition (OCR) software, and developed proprietary computer code to extract these data. Rotor ATPases are large multisubunit membrane protein complexes found in all kingdoms of life. The membrane parts of these ATPases include a ring-like assembly, so-called c-ring, consisting of several subunits c, plugged by a patch of phospholipids. In this report, we use a nature-inspired approach to model the assembly of the spinach (Spinacia oleracea) c14 ring protein-lipid complex, where partially assembled oligomers are pulled toward each other using a biasing potential. The resulting assemblies contain 23 to 26 encapsulated plug lipids, general position of which corresponds well to experimental maps. The neuroscience of music has recently attracted significant attention, but the effect of music style on the activation of auditory-motor regions has not been explored. The aim of the present study is to analyze the differences in brain activity during passive listening to non-vocal excerpts of four different music genres (classical, reggaeton, electronic and folk). Merit-based exclusion in Finnish music schools

In this article I analyse merit-based exclusion in Finnish music schools for children and young people. I base my study on my earlier research on meritocracy and written data collected online from current and former music school students in the autumn and winter of 2015–2016. I am able to show there are implicit and explicit merit-based hierarchies in the music school. Hierarchies and exclusion are shown to be connected to the institution’s meritocratic features. As the hierarchies are merit-based, it is hard to question them. The hierarchies justify excluding students from certain practices such as performances.
