Variation of fundamental constants and 229Th

The first excited state of the nucleus229Th has an exceptionally small excitation energy of7.8 eV, which is expected to be very sensitive to changes in the fine structure constant α.A small difference in the Coulomb energies of the two states, which both are of the order109eV, would amplify variations in α into large variations of the transition frequency.Hartree-Fock and Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations are performed to compute theCoulomb energies of the two states. The kinetic energies are also calculated which reflecta possible variation in the nucleon or quark masses or local Lorentz invariance violation. peerReviewed

Lifetimes of core-excited states in semi-magic $^{95}$Rh

Lifetimes of negative-parity states have been determined in the neutron deficient semi-magic (N = 50) nucleus 95Rh. The fusion-evaporation reaction 58Ni(40Ca,3p) was used to populate high-spin states in 95Rh at the Grand Accélérateur National d’Ions Lourds (GANIL) accelerator facility. The results were obtained using the Doppler Shift Attenuation Method (DSAM) based on the Doppler broadened line shapes produced during the slowing down process of the residual nuclei in a thick 6mg/cm2 metallic target. B(M1) and B(E2) reduced transition strengths are compared with predictions from large-scale shell-model calculations. peerReviewed
Studies of Tz= -3/2 nuclei of astrophysical interest

This thesis presents a summary of experimental studies of -decaying Tz = 3=2 nuclei 23Al and 31Cl. The properties of these nuclei and the respective -decay daughters, 23Mg and 31S, have an in uence on the end products of ONe nova outbursts. The experiments were carried out at the IGISOL facility in the Accelerator laboratory of University of Jyväskylä and at the Cyclotron institute of Texas A&M University. The mass excess of 23Al was determined with Penning trap mass spectrometry by using the JYFLTRAP setup at IGISOL facility. Työssä tutkittiin mittausmenetelmää lämmönjohtavuuden määrittämiseen mata- lissa lämpötiloissa. Mittaukset perustuivat 3ω menetelmään, joka on alunperin ohut- kalvoille kehitetty menetelmä lämmönjohtavuuden mittaukseen. Menetelmässä läm- mitinlangan läpi kulkeva vaihtovirta synnyttää kolminkertaisella taajudella olevan jännitteen, jonka avulla saadaan tietoa kappaleen termisistä ominaisuuksista. Mit- tauksissa kultainen lämmitinlanka höyrystettiin Kapton kalvon päälle ja tämän päälle hyvin ohut alumiinioksidikerros. Mittaukset suoritettiin pulssituubijäähdyttimeen ra- kennetussa näytteenpitimessä. Laitteiston toiminta varmistettiin huoneenlämpötilas- sa borosilikaatti- ja Kapton näytteillä.…
Musical training predicts cerebello-hippocampal coupling during music listening.

Cerebello-hippocampal interactions occur during accurate spatiotemporal prediction of movements. In the context of music listening, differences in cerebello-hippocampal functional connectivity may result from differences in predictive listening accuracy. Using functional MRI, we studied differences in this network between 18 musicians and 18 nonmusicians while they listened to music. Musicians possess a predictive listening advantage over nonmusicians, facilitated by strengthened coupling between produced and heard sounds through lifelong musical experience. Artikkelissa tarkastellaan laadullisen kyselyaineiston (N=180) avulla suomenkielisten, 15–25-vuotiaiden nuorten kokemuksia pelikäytöksestä digitaalisten pelien parissa. Teema-analyysin avulla rakennetut teemat valottavat epäasiallisen pelikäytöksen syitä ja seurauksia, kilpailullisten pelien suunsoittokulttuuria, pelikulttuureissa esiintyvää rakenteellista syrjintää, sekä myönteistä pelikäytöstä. Pelikäytös näyttäytyy artikkelissa monipuolisena ja monimutkaisena kokonaisuutena, johon vaikuttavat niin yksilöiden ominaisuudet ja mieltymykset kuin pelikulttuurien ja yhteiskunnan rakenteet. Evidence of oblate-prolate shape coexistence in the strongly-deformed nucleus 119Cs

International audience; Prolate-oblate shape coexistence close to the ground state in the strongly-deformed proton-rich A≈120 nuclei is reported for the first time. One of the four reported bands in 119Cs, built on a 11/2− state at 670 keV, consists of nearly degenerate signature partners, and has properties which unequivocally indicate the strongly-coupled πh11/2[505]11/2− configuration associated with oblate shape. Together with the decoupled πh11/2[541]3/2− band built on the 11/2− prolate state at 110 keV, for which a half-life of T1/2=55(5)μs has been measured, the new bands bring evidence of shape coexistence at low spin in the proton-rich strongly deformed A≈120 nuclei, a phenomenon p…
Isovector and isoscalar spin-multipole giant resonances in the parent and daughter nuclei of double-β-decay triplets

The strength distributions, including giant resonances, of isovector and isoscalar spin-multipole transitions in the commonly studied double-β-decay triplets are computed in the framework of the quasiparticle random-phase approximation (QRPA) using the Bonn-A two-body interaction in no-core single-particle valence spaces. The studied nuclei include the double-β parent and daughter pairs (76Ge, 76Se), (82Se, 82Kr), (96Zr, 96Mo), (100Mo, 100Ru), (116Cd, 116Sn), (128Te, 128Xe), (130Te, 130Xe), and (136Xe, 136Ba). The studied transitions proceed from the ground states to the Jπ=0−,1−,2− (spin-dipole transitions) and Jπ=1+,2+,3+ (spin-quadrupole transitions) excited states in these nuclei. Compa…
