Spatial calibration of structured illumination fluorescence microscopy using capillary tissue phantoms.

2008

Quantitative assessment of microvascular structure is relevant to the investigations of ischemic injury, reparative angiogenesis and tumor revascularization. In light microscopy applications, thick tissue specimens are necessary to characterize microvascular networks; however, thick tissue leads to image distortions due to out-of-focus light. Structured illumination confocal microscopy is an optical sectioning technique that improves contrast and resolution by using a grid pattern to identify the plane-of-focus within the specimen. Because structured illumination can be applied to wide-field (nonscanning) microscopes, the microcirculation can be studied by sequential intravital and confocal…

Double Drug Delivery Using Capped Mesoporous Silica Microparticles for the Effective Treatment of Inflammatory Bowel Disease

2019

[EN] Silica mesoporous microparticles loaded with both rhodamine B fluorophore (S1) or hydrocortisone (S2), and capped with an olsalazine derivative, are prepared and fully characterized. Suspensions of Si and S2 in water at an acidic and a neutral pH show negligible dye/drug release, yet a notable delivery took place when the reducing agent sodium dithionite is added because of hydrolysis of an azo bond in the capping ensemble. Additionally, olsalazine fragmentation induced 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) release. In vitro digestion models show that S1 and S2 solids are suitable systems to specifically release a pharmaceutical agent in the colon. In vivo pharmacokinetic studies in rats show …

Colonization of adrenal glands and ovaries of mice by HSV-2 variants

1990

HSV-2 strain ER was shown to consist of variants with different pathogenic phenotype: Variant ER+ replicates to high titers in the adrenal glands and the ovaries but much less in the spleen; the testes were not colonized. ER+ migrates to the spinal ganglia and is highly neuroinvasive after i.p. inoculation. Variant ER- replicates 100-1,000 fold less in the adrenal glands and the ovaries, but proceeds to the spinal ganglia without invading the CNS. However, both variants are highly neuropathogenic after direct i.c. injection. We conclude that neuropathogenicity, neuroinvasiveness and the ability to replicate in the adrenal glands as well as ovaries are each determined by different sets of ge…

TREATMENT OF PERSISTENTLY OPEN MACULAR HOLES WITH HEAVY SILICONE OIL (DENSIRON 68) VERSUS C2F6. A PROSPECTIVE RANDOMIZED STUDY

2016

Abstract PURPOSE: To compare the efficacy of a mixture of silicone oil and perfluorohexyloctane (Densiron 68) with C2F6 gas endotamponade in the retreatment of persistently open full-thickness macular holes. METHODS: In this prospective randomized study, 21 consecutive patients who were unsuccessfully operated on for large idiopathic full-thickness macular hole were randomly assigned to undergo a second vitrectomy with 20% perfluoroethane gas (C2F6, Group A) or with Densiron 68 tamponade (Group B). PRIMARY OUTCOMES: Endpoint (12 months) full-thickness macular hole closure rate by spectral domain optical coherence tomography and logMAR corrected distance visual acuity. SECONDARY OUTCOMES: po…

Heavy versus standard silicone oil in the management of retinal detachment with macular hole in myopic eyes

2011

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) with 1000 cSt silicone oil endotamponade and PPV with densiron endotamponade for retinal detachment with macular hole and posterior staphyloma in highly myopic eyes. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In a prospective study, 30 eyes of 30 patients were randomly assigned to PPV and densiron (n = 15) or PPV with silicone oil (n = 15). All eyes had laser photocoagulation of the macular hole rim after PPV. Silicone oil or densiron was removed 12 weeks after surgery. Patients were followed-up for 6 months after oil removal. RESULTS: In the densiron group, the retinal reattachment rate was 100% with densiron in situ and 87% after it…

?Reliability of new poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) membranes treated with oxygen plasma plus silicon dioxide layers for pre-prosthetic guided bone re…

2017

Background: The use of cold plasmas may improve the surface roughness of poly(lactic-co-glycolic) acid (PLGA) membranes, which may stimulate the adhesion of osteogenic mediators and cells, thus accelerating the biodegradation of the barriers. Moreover, the incorporation of metallic-oxide particles to the surface of these membranes may enhance their osteoinductive capacity. Therefore, the aim of this paper was to evaluate the reliability of a new PLGA membrane after being treated with oxygen plasma (PO) plus silicon dioxide (SiO) layers for guided bone regeneration (GBR) processes. Material and Methods: Circumferential bone defects (diameter: 11 mm; depth: 3 mm) were created on the top of ei…

A New Model of Skull Base Reconstruction following Expanded Endonasal or Transoral Approaches – Long-Term Results in Primates

2007

Objective: The direct endonasal or transoral transclival approaches to the skull base permit effective minimally invasive surgery along the clivus region. Developing consistently effective techniques to prevent cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks and their consequences (infections and healing processes with long and complicated recoveries) remains a major challenge. In this study, we tested over a long period a method of bone reconstruction newly developed by us, which makes use of a specially designed elastic silicone plug that can be employed for bone replacement after minimally invasive skull base surgery without risk of postoperative CSF leaks. After acute testing of plug…

Effect of head position on refraction in aphakic and phakic silicone-filled eyes.

1997

BACKGROUND The refraction of the eye is altered significantly after the instillation of silicone oil into the vitreous cavity because of the silicone oil's high refractive index. The degree of the refractive change shows diurnal variation and depends on the patient's head position. PATIENTS AND METHODS To analyze the degree and time course of refractive changes with respect to head position, the authors performed objective refraction in five aphakic and five phakic silicone oil-instilled eyes with attached maculae using an automatic hand-held refractometer. In each patient, 25 measurements were taken at short intervals using a hand-held autorefractometer with the patient in different positi…

Transrenal Ureteral Occlusion with a Detachable Balloon

1982

Transrenal ureteral occlusion using a detachable balloon was successfully employed to stop urinary flow in seven patients. The balloon was filled with low-viscosity silicone rubber and released in the distal ureter. Percutaneous nephrostomy provided external drainage. Indications were painful dysuria and large urinary fistulas in advanced pelvic malignancy. The method is preferable to ureteral embolization with tissue adhesive.

Simulation of the influence of gas flow on melt convection and phase boundaries in FZ silicon single crystal growth

2015

Abstract Axisymmetric calculations of inert gas flow in a floating zone puller are carried out using an open source software package OpenFOAM. Transient axisymmetric melt flow in liquid silicon and quasi-stationary shape of silicon phase boundaries are calculated using a specialized program FZone. Additional heat losses at silicon surfaces caused by the gas flow are taken into account for argon and helium, while maintaining the height of molten zone by adjusting inductor current. Cooling causes an increase of electromagnetic force, heat sources and more intense melt flow, while crystallization interface deflection decreases. The shear stress of gas flow is found to be an order of magnitude …
