Levosimendan in the treatment of patients with acute cardiac conditions: an expert opinion of the Association of Intensive Cardiac Care of the Polish…
2020
Levosimendan is a new inodilator which involves 3 main mechanisms: increases the calcium sensitivity of cardiomyocytes, acts as a vasodilator due to the opening of potassium channels, and has a cardioprotective effect. Levosimendan is mainly used in the treatment of acute decompensated heart failure (class IIb recommendation according to the European Society of Cardiology guidelines). However, numerous clinical trials indicate the validity of repeated infusions of levosimendan in patients with stable heart failure as a bridge therapy to heart transplantation, and in patients with accompanying right ventricular heart failure and pulmonary hypertension. Due to the complex mechanism of action,…
Teaching Technology Usage in the ENT Medical Subdomain via a Flipped Classroom Approach
2018
The flipped classroom approach is supporting a continuous interaction of students and instructors via online communication and strengthens the ability to solve problems by self-organization. This is especially important in medical domains, like the one of ENT-Head/Neck (ENT: Ear-Nose-Throat) surgeries and treatment. Surgical corrections of the nasal airways, like FESS (Functional Endoscopy Sinus Surgery) or in the field of plastic surgery, are the second frequent surgical interventions in otorhinolaryngology. They have to be prepared very carefully and airflow simulation with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is gaining importance for diagnostics here. New in silico procedures, like imagin…
A Multi-Variate Predictability Framework to Assess Invasive Cardiac Activity and Interactions during Atrial Fibrillation
2017
Objective: This study introduces a predictability framework based on the concept of Granger causality (GC), in order to analyze the activity and interactions between different intracardiac sites during atrial fibrillation (AF). Methods: GC-based interactions were studied using a three-electrode analysis scheme with multi-variate autoregressive models of the involved preprocessed intracardiac signals. The method was evaluated in different scenarios covering simulations of complex atrial activity as well as endocardial signals acquired from patients. Results: The results illustrate the ability of the method to determine atrial rhythm complexity and to track and map propagation during AF. Conc…
Technical note: Dosimetric study of a new Co-60 source used in brachytherapy
2007
The purpose of this study is to obtain the dosimetric parameters of a new Co-60 source used in high dose rate brachytherapy and manufactured by BEBIG (Eckert & Ziegler BEBIG GmbH, Germany). The Monte Carlo method has been used to obtain the dose rate distribution in the updated TG-43U1 formalism of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine. In addition, to aid the quality control process on treatment planning systems (TPS), a two-dimensional rectangular dose rate table, coherent with the TG-43U1 dose calculation formalism, is given. These dosimetric data sets can be used as input data of the TPS calculations and to validate them.
SU-FF-T-41: Monte Carlo Dosimetric Study of the New BEBIG Co-60 HDR Source
2005
Purpose: The use of high dose rate brachytherapy (HDR) is a highly extended practice today, being the Ir‐192 the most widely extended isotope used for this type of practice although Co‐60 is also available for HDR. The purpose of this study is to obtain the dosimetric parameters of the Co‐60 source used by the BEBIG MultiSource remote afterloader (BEBIG GmbH, Germany) for which there is no dosimetric data available in the literature. It is recommended that accurate dose distribution data, based on a realistic geometry and on the mechanical characteristics of the source, should be obtained by an appropriate method, experimental or Monte Carlo, to be used as input in the HDR Treatment Plannin…
Monte Carlo study of the dose rate distributions for the Ir2.A85-2 and Ir2.A85-1 Ir-192 afterloading sources
2008
The two most commonly used modalities of cancer treatment in clinical brachytherapy practice today are high dose rate (HDR) and pulsed dose rate (PDR) brachytherapy. In a clinical treatment, quality dose rate distribution data sets of the brachytherapy sources are required for each source model. The purpose of this study is to obtain detailed dose rate distributions around the new BEBIG HDR and PDR Ir-192 brachytherapy sources. These distributions will then be used as input data in the treatment planning systems dedicated to brachytherapy and its calculations can be verified. The Monte Carlo method was used to obtain the dose rate distributions around the sources studied, taking into accoun…
Stress and Recovery Responses during a 105-day Ground-based Space Simulation
2014
The present study analysed the time course of the psychological process of stress and recovery in six healthy male volunteers during the Mars 105 experimentation, a 105-day ground-based space analogue. The multidimensional assessment of stress and recovery responses showed that stress levels decreased significantly throughout the 105-day isolated and confined extreme (ICE) experiment, especially on its social dimension. In line with previous studies, Fatigue showed a global and progressive reduction. The present results suggest that ICE exposure may not systematically induce stress overload and impaired psychological states. To optimize adaptation to ICE conditions, further improvements in …
Variations in acoustical beam properties of intracoronary Doppler catheters.
1993
The limitations of coronary angiography in assessing the functional significance of coronary obstructions is well known. While the critical variable of coronary blood flow cannot be readily measured, intraluminal Doppler sonography offers useful related functional information on blood flow velocity. In order to fully evaluate Doppler signals it is essential to have exact knowledge of the transducer transmission characteristics and of the ultrasound beam topology. In an experimental set-up, the transmitter-receiver characteristics of five commonly used Doppler catheters were investigated. In comparing the beam characteristics we found inhomogeneities in the lateral beam spread. At a penetrat…
DNA-dependent DNA polymerase pattern in noninfected and herpesvirus infected rabbit kidney cells.
1973
In this paper we report on a DNA-dependent DNA polymerase produced in herpesvirus infected cells which is not present in virions. It differs from the polymerases of noninfected cells by its molecular weight as well as by its insensitivity to cytosine arabinoside triphosphate (ara-CTP).
Effects of different backpack loads in acceleration transmission during recreational distance walking
2013
It is well established nowadays the benefits that physical activity can have on the health of individuals. Walking is considered a fundamental method of movement and using a backpack is a common and economical manner of carrying load weight. Nevertheless, the shock wave produced by the impact forces when carrying a backpack can have detrimental effects on health status. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate differences in the accelerations placed on males and females whilst carrying different loads when walking. Twenty nine sports science students (16 males and 13 females) participated in the study under 3 different conditions: no weight, 10% and 20% body weight (BW) added in …
