Designing ‘trait-based null model’ approaches to investigate community assembly mechanisms
2014
SPEEAECOLDURGEAPSIéquipe CAPA; During the last decade, many studies have addressed the signature of community assembly processes by assessing the deviation of a functional diversity pattern from that expected in null communities, using a randomization algorithm. The basic principle has been to compare the functional structure of a ‘local community’ with a set of randomly generated communities from a ‘regional species pool’. Specifically, it allows assessing the extent to which species constituting a community are functionally more or less similar than expected under the assumption of a random assembly, thus revealing the influence of assembly processes such as competition or environmental a…
Construction of quality indicators based on pre-established goals: application to a colombian public university
2020
This study creates indicators of adequacy and excellence based on multiple-criteria decision-making (MCDM) methods and fuzzy logic. The calculation of indicators presents two main difficulties: The nature of the data (numerical, interval, and linguistic values are mixed) and the objective of each criterion (which does not have to reach either the maximum or the minimum). A method is proposed, based on similarity measures with predetermined ideals, that is capable of overcoming these difficulties to provide easy-to-interpret information about the quality of the alternatives. To illustrate the usefulness of this proposed method, it has been applied to data collected from students across nine …
Linking species interactions with phylogenetic and functional distance in European bird assemblages at broad spatial scales
2017
Aim: Understanding the relative contribution of different species interactions in shaping community assembly has been a pivotal aim in community ecology. Biotic interactions are acknowledged to be important at local scales, although their signal is assumed to weaken over longer distances. We examine the relationship between positive, neutral and negative pairwise bird abundance distributions and the phylogenetic and functional distance between these pairs after first controlling for habitat associations. Location: France and Finland. Time period: 1984 to 2011 (Finland), 2001 to 2012 (France). Major Taxa studied: Birds. Methods: We used results from French and Finnish land bird monitoring pr…
Edaphyc characteristics and floristic composition of the seasonally dry forest la menta and timbes, Piura Region, Peru
2011
On the status of <i>Statice dianiae</i> Pau (<i>Plumbaginaceae</i>)
1997
An apomictic Limonium with a single pollen-stigma combination (B type), Limonium interjectum , is proposed as a new species to replace the invalid name Statice dianiae Pau. The new species has a restricted distribution on the sea costs of eastern Spain (Alicante Province). It shows a striking morphological similarity to L. virgatum (Willd.) Fourr. and L. girardianum (Guss.) Girard; on this basis it is suggested that L. interjectum is a hybrid derived from the two species.
Colour assessment of milk and milk products using computer vision system and colorimeter
2021
Abstract A computer vision system (CVS) and a colorimeter were compared for their abilities to measure the colour of twenty-seven different milks and milk products. The frequency of similarity test showed that CVS-generated colour chips were similar to the actual sample colour in all trials (100%). The CVS-obtained colours were found to be more similar to the colour of sample visualised on the monitor, compared with colorimeter-generated colour chips, with values of 83.3–100.0% depending on the milk product. The third test showed that there was difference between colour measured by CVS and the colorimeter; colorimeter readings resulted in a darker and yellower colour based on average L∗a∗b∗…
Intelligent eye
2010
This paper describes Intelligent Eye, a mobile phone interactive leisure guide that offers location-based multimedia information. The information offered is related to the user's position, so the main goal of this work is the development of an efficient system to detect where the user is pointing his/her camera at by means of a content-based image retrieval algorithm (CBIR). The CBIR procedure uses color histograms in the HS color space extracted from images, and employs Kullback-Leibler divergence as the similarity measure. Intelligent Eye can be used in a wide range of camera-equipped mobile phones; however, efficiency is improved if GPS data is available. In order to outperform other sys…
Context Comparison for Object Fusion
2003
We propose a solution to help the integration of heterogeneous sources based on the fusion of objects according to their context. New requirements for information exchange have emerged with all the developments around Internet. Information consumers want to access and combine data from remote and heterogeneous sources in a transparent and dynamic way. To achieve this level of interoperation is yet a real challenge. We present a model to define local data as informative objects with a contextual representation associated to them. A semantic context comparison mechanism, based on a semantic distance, reconciles context of applications and constructs virtual objects in which rules make the fus…
An Innovative Similarity Measure for Sentence Plagiarism Detection
2016
We propose and experimentally assess Semantic Word Error Rate (SWER), an innovative similarity measure for sentence plagiarism detection. SWER introduces a complex approach based on latent semantic analysis, which is capable of outperforming the accuracy of competitor methods in plagiarism detection. We provide principles and functionalities of SWER, and we complement our analytical contribution by means of a significant preliminary experimental analysis. Derived results are promising, and confirm to use the goodness of our proposal.
Sub-symbolic Mapping of Cyc Microtheories in Data-Driven “Conceptual” Spaces
2007
The presented work aims to combine statistical and cognitive-oriented approaches with symbolic ones so that a conceptual similarity relationship layer can be added to a Cyc KB microtheory. Given a specific microtheory, a LSA-inspired conceptual space is inferred from a corpus of texts created using both ad hoc extracted pages from the Wikipedia repository and the built-in comments about the concepts of the specific Cyc microtheory. Each concept is projected in the conceptual space and the desired layer of subsymbolic relationships between concepts is created. This procedure can help a user in finding the concepts that are "sub-symbolically conceptually related" to a new concept that he want…
