Spatio-Chromatic Adaptation via Higher-Order Canonical Correlation Analysis of Natural Images

Independent component and canonical correlation analysis are two general-purpose statistical methods with wide applicability. In neuroscience, independent component analysis of chromatic natural images explains the spatio-chromatic structure of primary cortical receptive fields in terms of properties of the visual environment. Canonical correlation analysis explains similarly chromatic adaptation to different illuminations. But, as we show in this paper, neither of the two methods generalizes well to explain both spatio-chromatic processing and adaptation at the same time. Predictive First-Principles Modeling of a Photosynthetic Antenna Protein: The Fenna–Matthews–Olson Complex

High efficiency of light harvesting in photosynthetic pigment–protein complexes is governed by evolutionary-perfected protein-assisted tuning of individual pigment properties and interpigment interactions. Due to the large number of spectrally overlapping pigments in a typical photosynthetic complex, experimental methods often fail to unambiguously identify individual chromophore properties. Here, we report a first-principles-based modeling protocol capable of predicting properties of pigments in protein environment to a high precision. Implementations of a novel algorithm for colour constancy

AbstractIn agreement with the principles of the relativistic model proposed by Creutzfeldtet al., with the photometric rule (lightness anchoring rule) and with the influence of simultaneous contrast in the appearance of a visual scene, we propose a first-stage mechanism yielding substantial colour constancy. We have defined a set of first-stage colour descriptors, and to test their utility, we have performed a simulation using a Machine Vision System (MVS). The statistical stability of the descriptors for Munsell samples under different illuminants is good.

New circuital models of grounding systems and PDS for EMI analysis during a lightning strike

In this paper circuital models of a Power Drive System (PDS) and of grounding systems are proposed in order to analyse Electromagnetic Interferences (EMI) induced in a PDS when a lightning current flows in the grounding system. The models have been developed adopting the network approach with lumped parameters and have been implemented using the software MATLAB. A High Frequency (HF) model suitable to simulate the impulse response of a PDS is described and a generalized method in order to calculate the lumped parameters values of grounding system models is presented. Innovative straight formulation for plate in bending

In this paper it has been introduced an innovative formulation for evaluating the deflection function of a simply supported plate loaded by uniformly distributed edge moments. Framed into Line Element-less Method, this formulation allows the evaluation of solution in terms of deflection, through few lines of algorithm implemented by Mathematica software without resorting to any discretization neither in the domain nor in the boundary. Interesting savings in terms of time and computational costs are achieved. Results obtained by the proposed method are well contrasted by ones obtained by classical methods and Finite Element Method.

Data heterogeneity, within a (linear) regression framework, often suggests the use of a Clusterwise Linear Regression (CLR) procedure, which implies, among other things, the estimate of the appropriate number of clusters as well as the cluster membership of each unit. Cognitive factors in the evaluation of synthetic speech

Abstract This paper illustrates the importance of various cognitive factors involved in perceiving and comprehending synthetic speech. It includes findings drawn from the relative psychological and psycholinguistic literature together with experimental results obtained at the Fondazione Ugo Bordoni laboratory. Overall, it is shown that listening to and comprehending synthetic voices is more difficult than with a natural voice. However, and more importantly, this difficulty can and does decrease with the subjects' exposure to said synthetic voices. Accounting for haplotype phase uncertainty in linkage disequilibrium estimation

The characterization of linkage disequilibrium (LD) is applied in a variety of studies including the identification of molecular determinants of the local recombination rate, the migration and population history of populations, and the role of positive selection in adaptation. LD suffers from the phase uncertainty of the haplotypes used in its calculation, which reflects limitations of the algorithms used for haplotype estimation. Two-step impact of Amphotericin B (AmB) on lipid membranes: ESR experiment and computer simulations.

In this study, the electron spin resonance (ESR) method was used to examine the effect of Amphotericin B (AmB) molecules on the fluidity of model membranes made of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC). The changes occurring under increased AmB concentrations in the spectroscopic parameters of spin probes placed in liposomes were determined. Three probes were used, penetrating the membrane at different depths which allowed the changes in its fluidity to be found in the transverse section.
