Mind The Gap : Healthprofessional’s relation to Female Genital Schistosomiasis - Exploring perspectives, politics and practices during treatment on l…

2020

Master's thesis in Global Development and Planning (UT505) The main objective of the study was to elucidate why thereis a gap between medical research conducted on the neglected tropical disease Female Genital Schistosomiasis (FGS) and work-related knowledge about the disease amongst professional nurses in the Ugu District, South Africa. The study is based on qualitative field work in three local governmental clinics in this area, and the purpose is to explore why there is such a gap and why the development of knowledge concerning FGS seems to stagnate despite a relatively high level of awareness related to its "twin disease", Urological Schistosomiasis which is commonly referred to as Bilh…

Polymorphisms of β-defensin genes in Valle del Belice dairy sheep

2011

The aim of this work was to study β-defensin 1 (SBD1) and β-defensin 2 (SBD2) genes in Valle del Belice dairy sheep in order to identify polymorphisms that can be utilized as markers of the analyzed genes, and search for the functional effects and roles of the identified polymorphisms (variation of the amino acid sequence of the protein and stability of mRNA molecule). The study was conducted on 300 randomly selected animals belonging to four flocks. A total of seven SNPs were identified, two in SBD1 and five in SBD2. The two SNPs identified in SBD2 coding region, at position 1659 and position 1667, were non-synonymous, leading to amino acid changes in the protein product. Nevertheless, the…

Study of USH1 Splicing Variants through Minigenes and Transcript Analysis from Nasal Epithelial Cells

2012

Usher syndrome type I (USH1) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by congenital profound deafness, vestibular areflexia and prepubertal retinitis pigmentosa. The first purpose of this study was to determine the pathologic nature of eighteen USH1 putative splicing variants found in our series and their effect in the splicing process by minigene assays. These variants were selected according to bioinformatic analysis. The second aim was to analyze the USH1 transcripts, obtained from nasal epithelial cells samples of our patients, in order to corroborate the observed effect of mutations by minigenes in patient’s tissues. The last objective was to evaluate the nasal ciliary beat fre…

Prevalence of tick-borne encephalitis virus in questing Ixodes ricinus nymphs in southern Scandinavia and the possible influence of meteorological fa…

2023

Ixodes ricinus ticks are Scandinavia's main vector for tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV), which infects many people annually. The aims of the present study were (i) to obtain information on the TBEV prevalence in host-seeking I. ricinus collected within the Øresund-Kattegat-Skagerrak (ØKS) region, which lies in southern Norway, southern Sweden and Denmark; (ii) to analyse whether there are potential spatial patterns in the TBEV prevalence; and (iii) to understand the relationship between TBEV prevalence and meteorological factors in southern Scandinavia. Tick nymphs were collected in 2016, in southern Scandinavia, and screened for TBEV, using pools of 10 nymphs, with RT real-time PCR, an…

Dannelse og samskaping av utdanning mellom akademia og sykehjem En kritisk etnografisk studie

2020

Cultivation and co-creation of education between academy and nursing home-a critical ethnography study Collaboration between academy and practicein education is emphasized. In this study, weexplored and described boundary-crossing spaces, when co-creating an adjusted educational program for nursing students in a nursing home in Norway. Our aim was to explore how to learn person-centered dementia care through the participants in a learning community. A critical ethnographic approach and method with observations, field notes, minutes of board, spontaneous meetings, and focus groups particularly with the students were used. Data were analyzed with six-step thematic analysis by Braun and Clarke…

User-centred Design of a Digital Care Plan for Patients and Professionals in Cross-organisational Teams

2021

Care for patients with multimorbidity and long-term complex needs is costly and with demographic changes this group is growing. The research project Dignity Care addresses how to improve the care for this patient group by studying how a conceptual shared digital care plan for complex clinical pathways can guide and support cross-organisational care teams. This paper presents the user-centred design process for the digital care plan development. Panels of patients and health care professionals will participate in co-creation user workshops and simulation of complex patients’ pathways. The main contribution from this work is recommendations for how to actively involve user groups in digital h…

User-centred Design of a Mobile Application for Chronic Pain Management

2020

Chronic pain patients constitute a large and heterogeneous patient group and it is important to build tools and methods that can identify efficient treatment options for each individual patient. It is estimated that 20-30% of the population has suffered from chronic pain and this imposes enormous costs on society and the national welfare programs. The research project Chronic Pain addresses the problem of how to provide patients and physicians with relevant, valid and adapted decision alternatives in a shared decision making tool. This paper presents the results from co-creation workshops early in the user-centred design process of the chronic pain mobile application. The end-users contribu…

How Self-tracking and the Quantified Self Promote Health and Well-being: Systematic Review

2021

Self-tracking technologies are widely used in people’s daily lives and health care. Academic research on self-tracking and the quantified self has also accumulated rapidly in recent years. Surprisingly, there is a paucity of research that reviews, classifies, and synthesizes the state of the art with respect to self-tracking and the quantified self.

Life situation when your partner has substance use problems : Quality of life and everyday experiences

2019

Substance use problems (SUPs) in a family member have a highly negative impact on both the person experiencing such problems and his or her relatives. An estimated 10 – 30% of people are affected by SUPs in a close family member. Several studies have been conducted on relatives of people with SUPs, and they have documented strains such as physical and mental health problems, isolation, lack of support, and disturbance of family routines. However, the partners of people with SUPs seem to have been studied mostly from a psychological perspective, using personality pathology as a model to explain them remaining in such a dysfunctional relationship. Furthermore, partners in these families have …
