Understanding how biological communities respond to environmental changes is a key challenge in ecology and ecosystem management. The apparent decline of insect populations necessitates more biomonitoring but the time-consuming sorting and expert-based identification of taxa pose strong limitations on how many insect samples can be processed. Ihmistoiminta on muuttanut ja yhä muuttaa luonnontilaisia ekosysteemejä agro- ja teknosysteemeiksi. Nämä muutokset ovat kiihdyttäneet biologisen monimuotoisuuden häviämistä ja käynnistäneet niin sanotun kuudennen sukupuuttoaallon. Koska ihmiselo tukeutuu pitkälti luonnon monimuotoisuuteen, on monimuotoisuuden turvaamiseksi tehty sekä kansallisia että kansainvälisiä päätöksiä ja sopimuksia. Monimuotoisuutta voidaan turvata ennallistamalla tai hoitamalla muuttuneita ekosysteemejä. Ennallistaminen ja luonnonhoito ovat kuitenkin epämääräisiä käsitteitä. Uudet kattotermit, ekologinen interventio ja sitä tutkiva tieteenala interventioekologia, selventävät käsitteellisiä ongelmia. nonPeerReviewed
Metsäluonnon turvaava suojelun kohdentaminen Suomessa

Tässä mietinnössä Luontopaneeli keskittyy Suomen pinta-alaltaan suurimman ja siten lajien kannalta merkityksellisimmän elinympäristön eli boreaalisten metsien suojelun kohdentamiseen. EU:n BD-strategiassa mainitut käsitteet vanha metsä ja luonnontilainen metsä eivät ole yksiselitteisiä, ja niiden määritelmiin voidaan perustellusti esittää erilaisia näkökohtia. Tämän ei tule estää rationaalisten suojelusuunnitelmien tekoa. Luontopaneeli korostaa, että käsitteiden määrittelyn sijaan tärkeintä on EU:n BD-strategian tavoitteiden eli luonnon monimuotoisuuden säilymisen ja kokonaisheikentymättömyyden saavuttaminen. The continuous decline of forest biodiversity highlights the importance of the development of cost-effective and ecologically sustainable land-use planning approaches. Spatial conservation prioritisation (SCP) can be regarded as a useful tool for this challenge. We produced high-resolution, national scale SCP analyses to identify unprotected forest areas that host valuable forest biodiversity. Background Species- and genetic diversity can change in parallel, resulting in a species-genetic diversity correlation (SGDC) and raising the question if the same drivers influence both biological levels of diversity. The SGDC can be either positive or negative, depending on whether the species diversity and the genetic diversity of the measured species respond in the same or opposite way to drivers. Single-molecule magnet properties of a monometallic dysprosium pentalene complex

The pentalene-ligated dysprosium complex [(η8-Pn†)Dy(Cp*)] (1Dy) (Pn† = [1,4-(iPr3Si)2C8H4]2−) and its magnetically dilute analogue are single-molecule magnets, with energy barriers of 245 cm−1. Whilst the [Cp*]− ligand in 1Dy provides a strong axial crystal field, the overall axiality of this system is attenuated by the unusual folded structure of the [Pn†]2− ligand. peerReviewed
Analysis of the effects of magnetic field on the induced stress in drilled plates

Abstract A drilled plate of ferromagnetic material suitably coupled by coils of enameled copper wire fed by a DC power supply to 30 V is considered in this paper. It is analyzed with finite element and later experiments are performed to validate the obtained results. After polishing the plate, two strain gauges for measuring the deformation along the x axis and along the z axis are installed. The values of strain are 5 μm/m in z direction and −2 μm/m in x direction. The experimental–numerical comparison shows that the laboratory results are lower than numerical, while signs and orders of magnitude are the same.
