Building and Testing a Comparative Interface on Northwest European Historical Parliamentary Debates : Relative Term Frequency Analysis of British Rep…
2022
Tensions between the people and parliament over representation are a normal feature of representative democracies. In this paper, we demonstrate how digital humanities analysis tools help in answering questions about the timing of debates on popular representation, tensions over its realization, and representatives’ changing perceptions on their parliamentary role. Our long-term approach to the conceptual history of political representation is based on the analysis of digitized parliamentary debates as nexuses of multi-sited political discourse. We combine computer-assisted distant and context-sensitive close reading to consider diachronic trends and synchronic political struggles surroundi…
Vegetation dynamics on abandoned terraces of Sicily: the course and driving forces of succession
2007
In Mediterranean Europe, terrace landscapes can be found where 1) the orography is characterized by hills or mountains, 2) there is a high amount of stone outcrops and 3) the human need for agricultural production was quite high till the recent past. During the last century, many of these landscapes have been abandoned, due to their unsuitability for mechanized, intensive agriculture and due to the general land abandonment trend which arised in large parts of Europe. Since with land abandonment start secondary succession processes, the plant and animal communities linked to agroecosystems are replaced by other species which find their habitat in the developing succession stages. This proces…
2-Methylresorcinarene: a very high packing coefficient in a mono-anion based dimeric capsule and the X-ray crystal structure of the tetra-anion
2016
Mono- and tetra-deprotonated 2-methylresorcinarene anions (1 and 2) as their trans-1,4-diammoniumcyclohexane (TDAC)2+ inclusion complexes are reported. The mono-anion forms a fully closed dimeric capsule [1·H2O·MeOH]22− with a cavity volume of 165 Å3 and (TDAC)2+ as the guest with an extremely high packing coefficient, PC = 84.2%, while the tetra-anion forms a close-packed structure with two structurally isomeric tetra-anions 2a and 2b with a 50 : 50 ratio in the crystal lattice. peerReviewed

Thermal and thermo-oxidative stability and kinetics of decomposition of PHBV/sisal composites
2017
The decomposition behaviours of composites made of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) and sisal were assessed in terms of thermal stability and decomposition kinetics, under inert and oxidative conditions, by means of multi-rate linear non-isothermal thermogravimetric experiments. A statistical design of experiments was applied to study the influence of the addition of sisal (0-10-20-30%wt), the presence coupling agent (Yes/No) and the applied conditions of work (inert or oxidative). An improvement of the thermal and thermo-oxidative stability of PHBV with the addition of sisal was observed for all cases. An accurate methodology based on iso-conversional methods was applied…
Novel green bio-composite geopolymeric thermo-plasters for innovative building applications: upcycling spent coffee ground
2022
This study proposes the reuse of spent coffee ground and biomass fly ash in the development of green geopolymeric thermo-plastering for innovative building applications. The former waste is the major residue of the brewing process, that is usually used as fertilisers or disposed of in landfill with extreme harmfulness for the natural environment. The latter is an industrial waste generated during the Kraft paper-pulp process, that is usually landfilled. The mortar is produced with a combination of metakaolin (30 wt.%) and biomass fly ash (70 wt.%), and natural siliceous sand filled with spent coffee ground (up to 17.5 wt.%). The high amount of reused waste makes the material an optimum cand…
Clay/Non-Ionic Surfactant Hybrid Nanocomposites
2020
This chapter gives an overview of the structural and chemical physical properties of nanocomposites formed by clay minerals and surfactants, which represent a class of materials with promising features for applications in different industrial, biomedical, and environmental applications. Due to their non-toxicity and biocompatibility, a great deal of attention is nowadays devoted to the study of non-ionic surfactants. Among them, block copolymers represent a combination of the properties of common amphiphilic molecules and long polymer chains. These macromolecules can form a great variety of supra-molecular structures generated from self-organization phenomena in aqueous media. Nanostructure…
Applications and non-idealities of submicron Al–AlOx–Nb tunnel junctions
2016
We have developed a technique to fabricate sub-micron, 0.6µm×0.6µm Al-AlOx-Nb tunnel junctions using a standard e-beam resist, angle evaporation and double oxidation of the tunneling barrier, resulting in high quality niobium, as determined by the the high measured values of the critical temperature TC ∼ 7.5 K and the gap ∆ ∼ 1.3 meV. The devices show great promise for local nanoscale thermometry in the temperature range 1 - 7.5 K. Electrical characterization of the junctions was performed at sub-Kelvin temperatures both with and without an external magnetic field, which was used to suppress superconductivity in Al and thus bring the junction into a normal-metal-insulator-superconductor (NI…
Environmental Effects on Mechanical, Thermophysical and Electrical Properties of Epoxy Resin Filled with Carbon Nanofillers
2019
The aim of this work was to establish the effect of environmental factors (moisture and temperature) on some mechanical, electrical and thermal properties of epoxy-based composites filled with carbon nanofillers: nanotubes (CNT), nanofibers (CNF) and hybrid nanofiller (nanotubes/nanofibers in the ratio 1:1) and to reveal the most environmentally stable NC. First, the nanocomposites (NC) containing different nanofiller contents were prepared to evaluate electrical percolation threshold and to choose NC at certain electrical conductivity for further characterization of the physical properties in initial state and during/after environmental ageing. The environmental ageing consisted of water a…
