Modeling sequential production: the migratory beekeeper case

This paper formalizes a bio-economic model of migratory beekeeping activities, during the annual production cycle, so as to discern the optimal sequence of foraging sites for migratory beekeepers; it then proceeds to empirically verify the model via a case study. The model assumes that the apiary farm produces three marketable outputs under conditions of certainty with disjunctive resources at the sites. In particular, honey, commercial pollination services and nucleus colonies are produced sequentially at foraging sites throughout the year. Enantioselective synthesis of pyrazolone α-aminonitrile derivatives via an organocatalytic Strecker reaction

A new organocatalytic enantioselective Strecker reaction of pyrazolone-derived ketimine electrophiles has been developed. Using pseudo-enantiomeric squaramide catalysts the nucleophilic 1,2-addition of trimethylsilyl cyanide to the ketimines efficiently provides a direct entry to both enantiomers of pyrazolone α- aminonitrile derivatives at will in good yields and high enantioselectivities for a wide variety of substrates. peerReviewed

Mutation of a critical tryptophan to lysine in avidin or streptavidin may explain why sea urchin fibropellin adopts an avidin-like domain

Sea urchin fibropellins are epidermal growth factor homologues that harbor a C-terminal domain, similar in sequence to hen egg-white avidin and bacterial streptavidin. The fibropellin sequence was used as a conceptual template for mutation of designated conserved tryptophan residues in the biotin-binding sites of the tetrameric proteins, avidin and streptavidin. Three different mutations of avidin, Trp-110-Lys, Trp-70-Arg and the double mutant, were expressed in a baculovirus-infected insect cell system. Streptavidin-coated TiO2 surfaces are biologically inert: Protein adsorption and osteoblast adhesion studies

Non-fouling TiO2 surfaces are attractive for a wide range of applications such as biosensors and medical devices, where biologically inert surfaces are needed. Typically, this is achieved by controlled surface modifications which prevent protein adsorption. For example, polyethylene glycol (PEG) or PEG-derived polymers have been widely applied to render TiO2 surfaces biologically inert. These surfaces have been further modified in order to achieve specific bio-activation. ABSTRACT The biotin-binding tetrameric proteins, streptavidin from Streptomyces avidinii and chicken egg white avidin, are excellent models for the study of subunit-subunit interactions of a multimeric protein. Application of time–stress superposition to nonlinear creep of polyamide 66 filled with nanoparticles of various sizes

The long-term tensile creep of polyamide 66 and its nanocomposites filled with 1 vol.% TiO2 nanoparticles 21 and 300 nm in diameter is studied. It is assumed that the dominant mechanisms of creep deformation are of viscoelastic nature, while the contribution of plastic strains is not essential in the stress (< 0.6 of the ultimate stress) and time (about 100 hours) ranges considered. The creep isochrones obtained show that the materials exhibit a nonlinear viscoelastic behaviour and the degree of nonlinearity is reduced significantly by incorporation of the nanoparticles. Luminescence of localized states in silicon dioxide glass. A short review

Abstract The target is the description of the properties of localized states in silica glass, which relate to aspects of short-to-intermediate-range order. It has been observed that laser light interaction with localized states of silica glass leads to the creation of luminescence centers. Created luminescence centers, excited with laser light, provide intra-center luminescence of oxygen deficient centers (ODC) comprising a blue band at 2.7 eV and a UV band at 4.4 eV. STRONTIUM CONCENTRATION DEPENDENCE OF SELECTED STRUCTURAL AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF POLYCRYSTALLINE Ba1−XSrXTiO3

ABSTRACT Microstructure and material constants such as Young modulus E, shear modulus G, Poisson ratioν of polycrystalline ferroelectric materials Ba1-xSrxTiO3 for 0≤x≤0.4 were investigated to determine their dependence on strontium concentration. The performed investigations showed that the material is chemically homogeneous. It was found that the strontium concentration had no significant influence on the grain size. The highest value of Young's modulus is observed for Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 sample. The performed investigations of mechanical properties made it possible to evaluate the usability of this material for manufacturing transducers and sensors which could work under load.
