Field location and player roles as constraints on emergent 1-vs-1 interpersonal patterns of play in football
2017
This study examined effects of player roles on interpersonal patterns of coordination that sustain decision-making in 1-vs-1 sub-phases of football in different field locations near the goal (left-, middle- and right zone). Participants were fifteen U-16 yrs players from a local competitive amateur team. To measure interpersonal patterns of coordination in the 1-vs-1 dyads we recorded: (i) the relative distance value between each attacker and defender to the centre of the goal, and (ii), the relative angle between the centre of the goal, each defender and attacker. Results revealed how variations in field locations near the goal (left-, middle- and right-zones) constrained the relative dist…
P26-S Left and right motor cortical excitability and relationship to motor functions in healthy adolescents
2019
Background The interhemispheric difference in cortical excitability and its relationship to motor functions is unclear. Aim We examined the relationship between handedness, left and right motor cortex excitability and fine and gross motor functions in adolescence. Methods 28 healthy adolescents (age 16–19 years, 19 girls) were studied. Handedness was determined by the Waterloo Handedness Questionnaire. Motor threshold (MT) of the abductor pollicis brevis was measured on both hemispheres using biphasic stimulation, and on the left hemisphere also with monophasic stimulation. Box and block test (BBT) was used for manual dexterity, line run and standing long jump for gross motor tasks. Spearma…
Teacher Educators’ Professional Identity in English-Medium Instruction at a Finnish University
2021
Publisher Copyright: © 2021, University of Ljubljana. All rights reserved. Although different forms of English-medium instruction (EMI) are being recognised, the different ways in which EMI can impact the pedagogical activities and expertise of higher education educators have received less attention. Using face-to-face and written interviews with nine teacher educators at a Finnish university, this study examines the most important aspects teacher educators perceive in their work through EMI and how these aspects connect to the understanding of their professional identity. The study is theoretically premised on the interconnected concepts of pedagogical doing, pedagogical being, pedagogical…

Creating and implementing a didactic sequence as an educational strategy for foreign language teaching
2013
Speed in cognitive tasks as an indicator of second/foreign language reading and writing skills
2013
In a cross-sectional study 823 Finnish school children were tested to examine the relation between speed of performance in cognitive and linguistic tasks and second/foreign language reading and writing. Participants were Finnish-speakers with English as foreign language and Russian-speakers with Finnish as second language which made it possible to compare the results across these two language groups. The Finnish group was furthermore divided into three groups by age to see how speed develops with age and education. Groups were tested with a number of cognitive instruments that included measures of speed of performance. Overall, performance on the speed measures improved with age; often, the…
Tuntuuko, jos tästä painaa? Epäsuoruus, toimintaan kehottaminen ja asiantuntijuus terveydenhuollon ammattilaisten teksteissä
2014
Artikkelissa kasitellaan suomea toisena kielena kayttavien terveydenhuoltoalan ammattilaisten epasuoraa viittaamista henkiloon ja epasuoraa toimintaan kehottamista seka epasuoruuden kytkeytymista asiantuntijuuden muunlaiseen ilmenemiseen teksteissa. Epasuora ilmaustapa on tyypillinen erilaisissa terveydenhuollon tilanteissa, kuten potilaan ja terveydenhuollon ammatilaisen valisessa vuorovaikutuksessa ja kollegojen valisessa viestinnassa. Epasuoraa viittausta kaytetaan esimerkiksi kuvattaessa jonkin ilmion yleisia vaikutuksia keneen tahansa henkiloon tai toisaalta tiettyyn puhuteltavaan, joka jatetaan kuitenkin kielellisesti maarittelematta. Epasuoruus on tyypillista myos kehotettaessa toist…
Emotional intelligence as a mediator in the relationship between neuroticism and L2 achievement
2020
Abstract The present study investigates the interaction of the higher-order personality trait of Neuroticism and the lower-order personality trait of Emotional Intelligence (trait EI) in the context of foreign language acquisition (FLA). A mediation model was applied to explore the pathway from Neuroticism via trait EI to self-rated L2 skills. The reported results show that the trait EI is not only a significant predictor of the self-reported L2 speaking proficiency, but also a mediator in the relationship between Neuroticism and self-rated L2 speaking proficiency. Consequently, trait EI could be regarded as an important variable in the FLA context because its positive impact on self-percei…
Towards new cultures of learning: Personal learning environments as a developmental perspective for improving higher education language courses
2015
AbstractThis article provides readers with an understanding of the concept of the personal learning environment (PLE). It suggests that PLEs can be used in two complementary ways: as a developmental lens for integrating ICT and creating new pedagogical practices and digital literacies for academic language learning, and as a context in which learners can practise and develop core skills such as digital literacies, team and knowledge work, and interactional skills – skills that are needed for success in today’s knowledge economy. The article places PLEs within the broader development related to the cultural changes brought on by the proliferation of Web 2.0 technologies – participation, team…
Deviance, did you get it? An experiment in reading to learn
1991
Abstract This article reports an experiment in which an attempt was made to test reading a scientific text under as natural study conditions as possible. After reading a lengthy text from a Sociology textbook in English, five out of 25 Finnish college students understood a basic concept the way it had been defined by a sociologist; 4 weeks later, after going over the text the second time in Finnish, the number increased to 12. However, even after the second reading of the text in their first language, only half of the students had learnt the basic concept. This indicates that the problems in studying were not only linguistic problems; they seem also to have been study skill problems in gene…
