The Role of Diffusion Accommodation and Phase Boundary Wetting in the Deformation Behaviour of Ultrafine Grained Sn-Pb Eutectic

Mechanical properties, microstructure of the Sn–38wt. %Pb eutectic and the development of deformation - induced diffusion processes on interphase boundaries (IB) were investigated. Experiments were carried out both in deformed and annealed states of eutectic using micro- and nanoindentation, SEM, AFM and optical microscopy techniques. It was found that the deformation of the annealed alloy is localized at the Pb/Sn interphase boundaries and occurs by grain boundary sliding (GBS) accompanied by sintering micropore processes under the action of the capillary forces on the Pb/Sn IB. Moment‐based boundary conditions for straight on‐grid boundaries in three‐dimensional lattice Boltzmann simulations

In this article, moment‐based boundary conditions for the lattice Boltzmann method are extended to three dimensions. Boundary conditions for velocity and pressure are explicitly derived for straight on‐grid boundaries for the D3Q19 lattice. The method is compared against the bounce‐back scheme using both single and two relaxation time collision schemes. The method is verified using classical benchmark test cases. The results show very good agreement with the data found in the literature. Transmission of torque at the nanoscale

In macroscopic mechanical devices torque is transmitted through gearwheels and clutches. In the construction of devices at the nanoscale, torque and its transmission through soft materials will be a key component. However, this regime is dominated by thermal fluctuations leading to dissipation. Here we demonstrate the principle of torque transmission for a disc-like colloidal assembly exhibiting clutch-like behaviour, driven by $27$ particles in optical traps. The response field and the saddle points of quantum mechanical path integrals

In quantum statistical mechanics, Moyal's equation governs the time evolution of Wigner functions and of more general Weyl symbols that represent the density matrix of arbitrary mixed states. A formal solution to Moyal's equation is given by Marinov's path integral. In this paper we demonstrate that this path integral can be regarded as the natural link between several conceptual, geometric, and dynamical issues in quantum mechanics. A unifying perspective is achieved by highlighting the pivotal role which the response field, one of the integration variables in Marinov's integral, plays for pure states even. Testing the outflow theory of Malcherek by slit weir data

Abstract In this paper the flow-process of a slit weir is analyzed by the outflow theory of Malcherek. Average flow velocity over the slit weir is expressed in terms of head over weir and the momentum correction coefficient. The theoretically deduced stage-discharge formula was then calibrated using experimental data obtained for a ratio between the weir and the channel width ranging from 0.05 to 0.25. The deduced stage–discharge relationship allows to measure discharge values characterized by errors which are, for 91% of the measured values, less than or equal to ± 5%.

The intensity of the interference pattern at a given point O can be altered by changing the distance ∣O’AO∣ - ∣O’BO∣.

On the wave interaction in a charged fluid with Hall and ion slip-currents

The evolution of non linear small perturbations in a charged fluid with generalized Ohm's law is considered, pointing out the possibility of effects due to interaction between different waves. Following the perturbative reductive methods, some phase functions for studying interaction are introduced. A suitable hypothesis on their evolution permits us to prove that the amplitudes of the first order perturbation obey Burgers-like equations, in which the dissipative terms are not influenced by the Hall effect.

L0 trigger for the EMCal detector of the ALICE experiment

Abstract The ALICE experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) accelerator was designed to study ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The ALICE Electromagnetic Calorimeter (EMCal) was built to provide measurement of photons, electrons, and jets, and trigger selection of hard-QCD events containing them. The EMCal single-shower L0 trigger, which triggers on large energy deposit within a 4×4 tower sliding window, became operational in 2010. The implementation of the real-time FPGA based algorithm optimized to provide a fast L0 decision is presented.

In order to assess diastolic ventricular function in hypertensive patients, a single-slice multiphase sequence was used in order to measure contraction and early diastolic relaxation. There was no difference in the contraction velocity between hypertensives and normals (Vsys. n.r. = 56.1 +/- 13.8% LVDV/s vs. 51.7 +/- 8.6% LVEDV/s, stat, n. sign.). Early diastolic relaxation velocity in hypertensives was reduced as compared with the control group (Vdiast. 1n.r. = 37.9 +/- 13.1% LVEDV/s vs. 47.1 +/- 9.6% LVEDV/s, p < 0.05).
