The effect of amphiphilic compounds on the secretion of levansucrase by Zymomonas mobilis
2005
Abstract The effect of some aliphatic (n-butanol to n-hexadecanol) and aromatic (benzyl and phenethyl alcohols), anesthetics (procaine) and surfactants (Tween 20 to Tween 80) on the secretion of levansucrase by the levan-producing strain of Gram-negative ethanologenic bacteria Zymomonas mobilis 113S were examined in this study. During incubation of Z. mobilis cells with sucrose (10 mM) a decrease of the levansucrase activity was observed in the presence of these amphiphilic compounds concomitantly with an increase of a total amount of protein in the medium. Since none of the compounds under study had any effect on enzyme activity in vitro observed structure- and concentration-dependent rela…
A High Sensitive Nested PCR for Toxoplasma gondii Detection in Animal and Food Samples
2013
Toxoplasma gondii is a major food and waterborne transmitted parasite world-wide. The tissues and meat samples of many warm blooded animals can contain tissues cysts from chronic toxoplasmosis. Water and vegetable can be contaminated by the parasitic oocysts shed through the feces of infected cats, representing the definitive host of the parasite. A sensitive PCR for Toxoplasma gondii detection is described. The first step amplified the region between the 28S and 18S rDNA in the closely related T. gondii and Neospora caninum; RFLP analysis distinguished the DNA from the two morphologically identical parasites. Although N. caninum is not involved in human transmission, so far, it is importan…
Temporal variation in reproductive allocation in a shield bug Elasmostethus interstinctus
1996
We investigated changes in the reproductive output and the effect of female phenotype on reproductive parameters in a shield bug Elasmostethus interstinctus (L.) (Heteroptera: Acanthosomatidae) over the whole reproductive period. At the beginning and the middle of the reproductive period eggs were smaller than at the end of the period. Clutch mass and number of eggs per clutch decreased in laying sequence, first clutches being much larger than any of the later ones. Lifetime fecundity correlated positively with female size: large females produced more eggs and lived longer than small ones. Egg size did not vary with female size. Offspring survival until adulthood increased with egg weight. …
A new calibration of the effective scattering albedo and soil roughness parameters in the SMOS SM retrieval algorithm
2017
Abstract This study focuses on the calibration of the effective vegetation scattering albedo (ω) and surface soil roughness parameters (H R , and N Rp , p = H,V) in the Soil Moisture (SM) retrieval from L-band passive microwave observations using the L-band Microwave Emission of the Biosphere (L-MEB) model. In the current Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) Level 2 (L2), v620, and Level 3 (L3), v300, SM retrieval algorithms, low vegetated areas are parameterized by ω = 0 and H R = 0.1, whereas values of ω = 0.06 − 0.08 and H R = 0.3 are used for forests. Several parameterizations of the vegetation and soil roughness parameters (ω, H R and N Rp , p = H,V) were tested in this study, tre…

Contribution of exofacial thiol groups in the reducing activity of Lactococcus lactis
2010
Lactococcus lactis can decrease the redox potential at pH 7 (E(h7)) from 200 to -200 mV in oxygen free Man-Rogosa-Sharpe media. Neither the consumption of oxidizing compounds or the release of reducing compounds during lactic acid fermentation were involved in the decrease in E(h7) by the bacteria. Thiol groups located on the bacterial cell surface appear to be the main components that are able to establish a greater exchange current between the Pt electrode and the bacteria. After the final E(h7) (-200 mV) was reached, only thiol-reactive reagents could restore the initial E(h7) value. Inhibition of the proton motive force showed no effect on maintaining the final E(h7) value. These result…
Salt extraction regeneration technologies
2022
Abstract A salinity gradient power heat engine is a novel sustainable technology for the conversion of low-grade waste heat (T This chapter presents an overview of the main regeneration technologies based on the “salt extraction strategy” reported in the literature. A salt extraction regeneration unit takes advantage of the property of specific chemical compounds to shift from a soluble form to separable species in solution allowing the salt transfer between the exhausted solutions and aiding their regeneration. The regeneration processes reported here are classified into (i) switchable solubility salts and (ii) thermolytic salts. The first class includes compounds characterized by thermal…
Composite membranes of aromatic-polyamide for desalination: Membrane preparation and characterization.
1987
A new reverse osmosis composite membrane composed of the following aromatic polymer was estudied. Composite membranes were successfully prepared from PTDS by the conventional phase-inversion method. A typical example of the basic membrane performances is as follows; water flux, 440 1/m2 day and salt rejection, 97.7% determined under the pressure of 40 atm., using 0.1% NaCl solution at 25 °C. The PTDS membrane was characterized by its excellent chemical and thermal resistances, especially against acid, alkali and oxidative atmospheres. These features suggest that the PTDS membrane is a promising candidate for water desalination.
Purification of ATP synthase from beef heart mitochondria (FoF1) and co-reconstitution with monomeric bacteriorhodopsin into liposomes capable of lig…
1993
ATP synthase was isolated from beef heart mitochondria by extraction with N,N-bis-(3-D-gluconamidopropyl)deoxycholamide or by traditional cholate extraction. The enzyme was purified subsequently by ion-exchange and gel-permeation chromatographies in the presence of glycerol and the protease inhibitor diisopropylfluorophosphate. The ATP synthase consisted of 12–14 subunits and contained three tightly bound nucleotides. The co-reconstitution of crude or purified ATP synthase with monomeric bacteriorhodopsin by the method of detergent incubation of liposomes yielded proteoliposomes capable of light-driven ATP synthesis, as detected with a luciferase system for at least 30 min. The reaction was…
