Family networks and refugees’ health conditions. A picture from Italian informal settlements

2021

While the relationships between social networks and health are widely acknowledged in the literature, few of these studies have covered the population of refugees living in makeshift camps. In our analysis of a nationally representative Italian survey of individuals living in informal settlements, we find that many had weak family relations: only 10 per cent had one or more family members in their settlement. The paper analyses the effects of individual social network on two measures of health, and finds that the refugees’ health conditions were associated with both their personal characteristics and the characteristics of the settlement. The results show that more than 50 per cent of these…

Kapitał społeczny w zrównoważonym rozwoju regionu opolskiego na przykładzie badań w towarowych gospodarstwach rolnych / Social capital in balanced de…

2016

Sieci społecznościowe w ukraińskiej edukacji: blaski i cienie

2018

Export Barrier Perceptions in Tanzania: The Influence of Social Networks

2012

In this article, the author empirically examines export barriers Tanzanian firms encounter in attempting to initiate and/or expand export activities and the strategies they use for overcoming these barriers. Based on a social network perspective, the research hypothesizes that firms exploiting diverse networks should normally encounter fewer export barriers. Using a survey dataset collected from 122 manufacturing firms, the findings support the notion that networking reduces export barriers. More specifically, exploiting a large number of strong ties relative to weak ties, and a large number of institutional ties relative to business ties, can substantially enhance firms’ capabilities of ov…

2014

There has been a shifting change that has been in process over the years. From a hospital oriented based care offer in psyciatric health care, to a more desentralised direction where the care is oritented through community-based service. The idea is that everyone is to receive individual and costumised help in the community where they live. One wishes that every being gets the help they need in the community so that they can have the opportunity to be integrated and live as a part of the community. The number of bedposts in psychiatric hospitals has decreased over the years, and the community-based services has increased the offer. At the same time it has been noticed that some people are r…

Problematic internet use prior to and during the COVID-19 pandemic

2021

The health and socio-economic challenges arising from the COVID-19 pandemic have led to greater reliance on the internet to meet basic needs and responsibilities. Greater engagement in online activities may have negative mental and physical health consequences for some vulnerable individuals, particularly under mandatory self-isolation or ‘lockdown’ conditions. The present study investigated whether changes in levels of involvement in online activities during the COVID-19 pandemic (i.e., watching TV series, online sexual activities, video games, social networks, gambling, online shopping, and instant messaging) were associated with problematic internet use, as well as whether certain psychol…

Genres of participation in social networking systems: A study of the 2009 Norwegian parliamentary election

2010

Published version of a chapter in the book: Electronic Participation. Also available at http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-642-15158-3_9 In the Norwegian context, eParticipation in the form of online campaigning has been on the agenda since 2001. After Obama’s successful presidential campaign in 2008, expectations about the use of SNS in the Norwegian parliamentary election were high. This study explores genres of participation in the early stages of the 2009 Norwegian parliamentary election campaign. The main finding is that the political parties have seen the need for a presence in SNS’, and that a genre repertoire for political communication through SNS is beginning to evolve. However, ther…
