Aquatic organisms can be harmed by the current levels of solar ultraviolet radiation. We have recently shown that exposure of fish to UVB irradiation alters the functioning of the fish immune system, but the effects of UVA radiation are unknown. The present study continues this work by characterizing UVA irradiation-induced immunological changes in fish. Roach, a cyprinid fish, were exposed to a single dose of either UVA (3.6 J/cm2) or UVB (0.5 J/cm2) irradiation. Both irradiations suppressed transiently mitogen-stimulated proliferation of blood lymphocytes. Abstract Since 1989, the Siemens lithostar plus, an upgrade of the lithostar with the ultrasonically guided overhead module, has been available for clinical use. This unit may be used for the treatment of either biliary or urinary calculi. We report on 75 patients with urinary calculi treated between March 1989 and June 1990 with the lithostar overhead module. Stone localization showed a rate of: caliceal stones 33.5%, pelvic stones 44%, upper ureteral stones 9.3% and lower ureter stones 13%. The overall disintegration rate was 86%, with a stone-free rate after 3 months of 78%.

Background Gas in the renal excretory system is described as a consequence of recent procedures but it can be a sign of severe conditions such as fistulas or infections; however, gas-containing renal stones are only rarely encountered.
