Fractal dimension versus density of built-up surfaces in the periphery of Brussels

International audience; This paper aims at showing the usefulness of the fractal dimension for characterizing the spatial structure of the built-up surfaces within the periurban fringe. We first discuss our methodology and expectations in terms of operationality of the fractal dimension theoretically and geometrically. An empirical analysis is then performed on the southern periphery of Brussels (Brabant Wallon). Handling of Small Scale Structures of the Irradiance Field for Solar Energy System Analysis – A Review

Abstract Satellite derived irradiance information currently approaches a status as standard input for solar energy system analysis. Due to intrinsic limitations in spatial and temporal resolution, these data fail to give information of the full dynamics of the irradiance field in space and time. The analysis of systems with sensibility to details of the temporal evolution of the irradiance field and systems with sensibility to the spatial inhomogeneity of the field require knowledge of its fine-structured. Thus, methods for a respective enhancement of the satellite derived data are needed. This contribution presents various approaches discussed for setting up respective input data.

Age and spatial structure of natural Pinus sylvestris stands in Latvia

Abstract The age and spatial structure of six natural old growth Pinus sylvestris stands in Latvia were investigated, to attempt to identify retrospectively the past features of development. In each stand, one or two plots of size 200–900 m2 were established. Tree locations were mapped, stem diameter was measured, and tree age was determined from cores or by counting branch whorls. Tree distribution was assessed by Ripley's K function. A clumped spatial pattern was shown for P. sylvestris younger than 100 years. AbstractTurunen discusses how the “European significance” of the European Heritage Label (EHL) sites has been narrated through interconnections of European values and European integration. She argues that, in the context of the EHL, integration is intricately linked to the notion of spreading common values, which in turn is entangled with Eurocentrism.
