The everyday and spectacle of subdued citizenship in northern Uganda
2019
Drawing on ethnographic research in the Acholi town of Kitgum in northern Uganda, this chapter illustrates how citizenship practices are embedded in particular relationships between the state and its citizens. Two key arenas for learning are identified: the everyday, which in this region is tinged by memories of past violence and fears of its recurrence, and moments of spectacular state performance such as the burial of a prominent politician. The chapter shows how practices of citizenship are learned through embodied experiences: by taking part in public debate, by voting or by greeting a flag, but also by running away from a soldier or by staying quiet due to fear. The chapter’s overall a…
Electron spectra in forbidden β decays and the quenching of the weak axial-vector coupling constant gA
2017
Evolution of the electron spectra with the effective value of the weak axial-vector coupling constant gA was followed for 26 first-, second-, third-, fourth- and fifth-forbidden β− decays of odd-A nuclei by calculating the involved nuclear matrix elements (NMEs) in the framework of the microscopic quasiparticle-phonon model (MQPM). The next-to-leading-order terms were included in the β-decay shape factor of the electron spectra. The spectrum shapes of third- and fourth-forbidden nonunique decays were found to depend strongly on the value of gA, while first- and second-forbidden decays were mostly unaffected by the tuning of gA. The gA-driven evolution of the normalized β spectra was found t…
Photodynamics studies of ligand-protected gold nanoclusters by using ultrafast transient infrared spectroscopy
2015
Highly monodisperse samples of three ligand-protected gold nanoclusters Au102(pMBA)44, Au144(SC2H4Ph)60, and a cluster tentatively identified as Au130(pMBA)50, were characterized by UV/vis and infrared spectroscopy, and their photodynamics was studied by transient absorption spectroscopy. The dynamics study for each cluster was performed by electronically exciting the cluster with a pump pulse in the visible or near infrared region and by monitoring the transient absorption of vibrational modes of the ligands with a mid-IR probe pulse. The photodynamics studies were used to determine the molecular or metallic behavior of the cluster, and also to gain important size dependent information abo…

Tin resonance-ionization schemes for atomic- And nuclear-structure studies
2020
This paper presents high-precision spectroscopic measurements of atomic tin using five different resonance-ionization schemes performed with the collinear resonance-ionization spectroscopy technique. Isotope shifts were measured for the stable tin isotopes from the $5{s}^{2}5{p}^{2}\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}^{3}{P}_{0,1,2}$ and ${}^{1}{S}_{0}$ to the $5{s}^{2}5p6s\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}^{1}{P}_{1},^{3}{P}_{1,2}$ and $5{s}^{2}5p7s{\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}}^{1}{P}_{1}$ atomic levels. The magnetic dipole hyperfine constants ${A}_{\mathrm{hf}}$ have been extracted for six atomic levels with electron angular momentum $Jg0$ from the hyperfine structures of nuclear spin $I=1/2$ tin isot…
Spectroscopy of short-lived radioactive molecules
2020
Molecular spectroscopy offers opportunities for the exploration of the fundamental laws of nature and the search for new particle physics beyond the standard model1–4. Radioactive molecules—in which one or more of the atoms possesses a radioactive nucleus—can contain heavy and deformed nuclei, offering high sensitivity for investigating parity- and time-reversal-violation effects5,6. Radium monofluoride, RaF, is of particular interest because it is predicted to have an electronic structure appropriate for laser cooling6, thus paving the way for its use in high-precision spectroscopic studies. Furthermore, the effects of symmetry-violating nuclear moments are strongly enhanced5,7–9 in molecu…

Recurrent lumbar disc herniation: Is there a correlation with the surgical technique? A multivariate analysis
2019
Purpose: The recurrence of a lumbar disc herniation (LDH) is a common cause of poor outcome following lumbar discectomy. The aim of this study was to assess a potential relationship between the incidence of recurrent LDH and the surgical technique used. Furthermore, we tried to define the best surgical technique for the treatment of recurrent LDH to limit subsequent recurrences. Materials and Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on 979 consecutive patients treated for LDH. A multivariate analysis tried to identify a possible correlation between (1) the surgical technique used to treat the primary LDH and its recurrence; (2) technique used to treat the recurrence of LDH and the secon…
Ultrafast Coherent THz Lattice Dynamics Coupled to Spins in the van der Waals Antiferromagnet FePS3
2022
Coherent THz optical lattice and hybridized phonon–magnon modes are triggered by femtosecond laser pulses in the antiferromagnetic van der Waals semiconductor FePS3. The laser-driven lattice and spin dynamics are investigated in a bulk crystal as well as in a 380 nm-thick exfoliated flake as a function of the excitation photon energy, sample temperature and applied magnetic field. The pump-probe magneto-optical measurements reveal that the amplitude of a coherent phonon mode oscillating at 3.2 THz decreases as the sample is heated up to the Néel temperature. This signal eventually vanishes as the phase transition to the paramagnetic phase occurs, thus revealing its connection to the long-ra…
