Rail and Joint Bar (Fish Plate) NDE Advances in North America
2010
Improvement and development of rail track nondestructive inspection (NDI) technologies to reduce in-service failures of rail and joint bars (fish plates) in a continuous effort to make rail transport safer is a primary focus for the railroad industry. Researchers at The Transportation Technology Center, Inc., working under the direction of the Association of American Railroads and its Strategic Research Initiative Program, have worked with companies worldwide to develop novel NDI approaches for dynamic inspection of rail and joint bars. In the area of rail inspection an ultrasonic rail (U-Rail) system for noncontact rail flaw inspection has been developed. This system combines high energy l…
Filosofia moral i ètiques aplicades II
2014
Mass Measurements of Proton-rich Nuclei with JYFLTRAP
2011
The Penning trap setup JYFLTRAP, connected to the IGISOL facility, has been extensively used for atomic mass measurements of exotic nuclei. On the proton rich side of the chart of nuclei mass measurements have mostly contributed to fundamental physics and nuclear astrophysics studies with about 100 atomic masses measured. peerReviewed
Productive love promotion via affective technology : An approach based on social psychology and philosophy
2010
A recent development in the technology acceptance literature is the inclusion of gender as a moderator of the relationships between intention and its antecedents, such that some are stronger for men than women, and vice versa. While the effects have been well established, the mechanisms by which they operate, that is, which specific gender differences are in operation and how they affect intention to adopt, have not been thoroughly explored. In this research, psychological constructs with established gender differences, such as core self-evaluations, computer self-efficacy and anxiety, psychological gender-role, and risk-taking propensity, are examined. In addition, this research introduces…
Postmodern Business Ethics - Is It Possible, Is It Relevant?
1998
Ethics as a general philosophy and doctrine of good life and action has penetrated also the field of economic research. This application has been called business ethics. In the wide sense it concentrates on studying the practices of business life from the moral point of view. It criticizes, studies, and tries to give instructions.
The determination of trace element concentrations in fly ash samples using ultrasound-assisted digestion followed with inductively coupled plasma opt…
2009
A method of ultrasound-assisted digestion followed by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) used for the determination of trace element (chromium, copper, lead, nickel, vanadium and zinc) concentrations in fly ash samples was developed. All the measurements were performed in robust plasma conditions. Ultrasound-assisted digestion procedures using digestion solutions of aqua regia and hydrofluoric acid (HF) resulted in recovery rates of over 80% for all the analyte elements. Ultrasound-assisted two-step digestion with digestion solutions of 6 mL of HNO₃(Step 1) and 3 mL of HNO₃+ 3 mL of HF (Step 2) resulted in recovery rates of over 92% for all the analyte elemen…
Volcanic CO2 measurements at Campi Flegrei by Infrared Tunable Diode Laser absorption Spectroscopy
2014
Gas studies add information for the interpretation of fluid circulation dynamics at dormant volcanoes and can contribute to eruption forecasting. Direct in-situ and remote-sensing techniques were used in order to improve volcanic gas monitoring, essential for hazard assessment. In the last decades, near-infrared diode lasers have increasingly been used in atmospheric research and, though in an experimental phase, are now finding applications in volcanic gas studies. The Tunable Diode Laser Spectroscopy technique (TDLS) relies on measuring the absorbance at specific wavelengths due to the absorption of IR radiation by a target gas. Here, we report on the application of the GasFinder 2.0, an …
Students at the core of English-medium instruction : research on the study paths of international master's degree students and the role of academic E…
2018
The present study focuses on the International Master’s Degree Programs (IMDP) of the University of Jyväskylä and issues related to English-medium instruction (EMI). At the core of the present study are the IMDP students’ conceptualizations of, and reflections on, academic English. Furthermore, the study examines the IMDP students’ reported language gains in academic English as well as the internal and external factors to which the students’ attribute these gains, or the lack of them. In order to map out these aspects, 15 IMDP students were interviewed at the end of their two-year program. These interviews were then analyzed inductively with the help of Atlas.ti software and by adhering to …

How Does Family Management Affect Firm Performance : Evidence from Taiwanese Firms
2011
This study used the panel data of 465 Taiwanese listed companies by applying both accounting and market-value indicators to an examination of family management’s influence on firm performances. The empirical results show that family firms in Tai-wan have performed better than non-family firms. The combination of equity owner-ship and management right has helped family firms reduce agency cost and enhance firm value in the long run. As for family management, the empirical results suggest that if the founder serves as the chairman and CEO at the same time, it is most benefi-cial to the firm’s performance. When the position of CEO is passed to a hired manag-er, it may enhance firm performance …
