Impact of spatial resolution and satellite overpass time on evaluation of the surface urban heat island effects

2012

Abstract Surface Urban Heat Island (SUHI) effect is defined as the increased surface temperature in urban areas in contrast to surrounding cooler temperatures in rural areas. In this paper, we study the characteristics that a spaceborne sensor must satisfy in terms of spatial resolution and overpass time to properly monitor the SUHI effect. For this, Land Surface Temperature (LST) maps, generated at different spatial resolution using the Airborne Hyperspectral Scanner (AHS) imagery, and in situ data of air temperature and LST obtained from the framework of the Dual-use European Security IR Experiment 2008 have been considered for the city of Madrid (Spain). The results showed that (1) spati…

Monitoring Coastal Lagoon Water Quality Through Remote Sensing: The Mar Menor as a Case Study

2019

The Mar Menor is a hypersaline coastal lagoon located in the southeast of Spain. This fragile ecosystem is suffering several human pressures, such as nutrient and sediment inputs from agriculture and other activities and decreases in salinity. Therefore, the development of an operational system to monitor its evolution is crucial to know the cause-effect relationships and preserve the natural system. The evolution and variability of the turbidity and chlorophyll-a levels in the Mar Menor water body were studied here through the joint use of remote sensing techniques and in situ data. The research was undertaken using Operational Land Imager (OLI) images on Landsat 8 and two SPOT images, bec…

Search for superheavy elements in monazites using chemical enrichment

1982

Evidence for the existence of superheavy elements in monazite inclusions embedded in Madagascan mica and surrounded by giant radioactive haloes was given by Gentry et al.1 who observed photons with energies corresponding to predicted Lα1 X-ray energies of element 126 (at 27.25 keV) and also of elements 116, 124 and 127 in irradiations of such crystals with collimated proton beams. For an unambiguous identification, the detection of further members of the L X-ray series would be most important. In X-ray spectra of monazite samples these transitions are buried under the strong K X-ray peaks of the lanthanide elements. They should, however, become visible after chemical enrichment of the super…

Photoluminescence study of terbium-exchanged ultrastable Y zeolites: Number of species, photoluminescence decays and decay-associated spectra

2008

Terbium-exchanged ultrastable Y (USY) zeolites were investigated by using time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy techniques and methods. To determine the distribution of terbium species in USY zeolites together with their photoluminescence properties, several analysis methods for the time-resolved luminescence spectra were used such as the area normalization of time-resolved photoluminescence spectra, singular value decomposition, global nonlinear least squares, and the maximum entropy. Except for a questionable long lifetime, small contribution of a terbium species with lifetime of 1.9¿2.1 ms, all the experimental and analysis results converged to a two terbium species distribution w…

Structure and characteristics of laser crystallized thin amorphous Si films

2011

Abstract Pure amorphous Si thin films deposited on oxidized crystalline Si surface (111) were crystallized by picosecond UV laser pulses. The Raman scattering spectra show that pulse energy of 330 mJ/cm2 is enough to fully crystallize Si film and further increase of the energy does not improve crystallinity. A large grained polycrystalline Si was obtained as revealed by surface analysis. A significant increase in carrier mobility was observed after laser crystallization.

Assessment of workflow feature selection on forest LAI prediction with sentinel-2A MSI, landsat 7 ETM+ and Landsat 8 OLI

2020

The European Space Agency (ESA)’s Sentinel-2A (S2A) mission is providing time series that allow the characterisation of dynamic vegetation, especially when combined with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)/United States Geological Survey (USGS) Landsat 7 (L7) and Landsat 8 (L8) missions. Hybrid retrieval workflows combining non-parametric Machine Learning Regression Algorithms (MLRAs) and vegetation Radiative Transfer Models (RTMs) were proposed as fast and accurate methods to infer biophysical parameters such as Leaf Area Index (LAI) from these data streams. However, the exact design of optimal retrieval workflows is rarely discussed. In this study, the impact of…

Identification of the most informative wavelengths for non-invasive melanoma diagnostics in spectral region from 450 to 950 nm

2020

In this study 300 skin lesion (including 32 skin melanomas) multispectral data cubes were analyzed. The multi-step and single step machine learning approaches were analyzed to find the wavebands that provide the most information that helps discriminate skin melanoma from other benign pigmented lesions. The multi-step machine learning approach assumed training several models but proved itself to be ineffective. The reason for that is a necessity to train a segmentation model on a very small dataset and utilization of standard machine learning classifier which have shown poor classification performance. The single-step approach is based on a deep learning neural network. We have conducted 260…

Semi-Supervised Classification Method for Hyperspectral Remote Sensing Images

2004

A new approach to the classification of hyperspectral images is proposed. The main problem with supervised methods is that the learning process heavily depends on the quality of the training data set. In remote sensing, the training set is useful only for simultaneous images or for images with the same classes taken under the same conditions; and, even worse, the training set is frequently not available. On the other hand, unsupervised methods are not sensitive to the number of labelled samples since they work on the whole image. Nevertheless, relationship between clusters and classes is not ensured. In this context, we propose a combined strategy of supervised and unsupervised learning met…
