On the Characterization of Dynamic Properties of Random Processes by Spectral Parameters

2000

This paper deals with the general problem of directly relating the distribution of ranges of wide band random processes to the power spectral density (PSD) by means of closed-form expressions. Various attempts to relate the statistical distribution of ranges to the PSD by means of the irregularity factor or similar parameters have been done by several authors but, unfortunately, they have not been fully successful. In the present study, introducing the so-called analytic processes, the reasons for which these parameters are insufficient to an unambiguous determination of the range distribution and the fact that parameters regarding the time-derivative processes are needed have been explaine…

Synergetic exploitation of the Sentinel-2 missions for validating the Sentinel-3 ocean and land color instrument terrestrial chlorophyll index over a…

2019

Continuity to the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) Terrestrial Chlorophyll Index (MTCI) will be provided by the Ocean and Land Color Instrument (OLCI) on-board the Sentinel-3 missions. To ensure its utility in a wide range of scientific and operational applications, validation efforts are required. In the past, direct validation has been constrained by the need for costly airborne hyperspectral data acquisitions, due to the lack of freely available high spatial resolution imagery incorporating appropriate spectral bands. The Multispectral Instrument (MSI) on-board the Sentinel-2 missions now offers a promising alternative. We explored the synergetic use of MSI data for validat…

Monitoring water stress in Mediterranean semi-natural vegetation with satellite and meteorological data

2014

In arid and semi-arid environments, the characterization of the inter-annual variations of the light use efficiency ε due to water stress still relies mostly on meteorological data. Thus the GPP estimation based on procedures exclusively driven by remote sensing data has not found yet a widespread use. In this work, the potential to characterize the water stress in semi-natural vegetation of three spectral indices (NDWI, SIWSI and NDI7) – from MODIS broad spectral bands – has been analyzed in comparison to a meteorological factor (Cws). The study comprises 70 sites (belonging to 7 different ecosystems) uniformly distributed over Tuscany, and three eddy covariance tower sites. An operational…

Mapping wild pear trees (Pyrus bourgaeana) in Mediterranean forest using high-resolution QuickBird satellite imagery

2012

Recent advances in spatial and spectral resolution of satellite imagery as well as in processing techniques are opening new possibilities of fine-scale vegetation analysis with interesting applications in natural resource management. Here we present the main results of a study carried out in Sierra Morena, Cordoba southern Spain, aimed at assessing the potential of remote-sensing techniques to discriminate and map individual wild pear trees Pyrus bourgaeana in Mediterranean open woodland dominated by Quercus ilex . We used high spatial resolution 2.4 m multispectral/0.6 m panchromatic QuickBird satellite imagery obtained during the summer of 2008. Given the size and features of wild pear tr…

Mapping sub-pixel burnt percentage using AVHRR data. Application to the Alcalaten area in Spain

2010

The purpose of this work is to estimate at sub-pixel scale the percentage of burnt land using the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer AVHRR through a simple approach. This methodology is based on multi-temporal spectral mixture analysis MSMA, which uses a normalized difference vegetation index NDVI and a land-surface temperature LST image as input bands. The area of study is located in the Alcalaten region in Castellon Spain, a typical semi-arid Mediterranean region. The results have shown an extension of approximately 55 km2 affected by fire, which is only 5% lower than the statistic reports provided by the Environmental Ministry of Spain. Finally, we include a map of the area showing…

Cross-correlation and cross-power spectral density representation by complex spectral moments

2017

Abstract A new approach to provide a complete characterization of normal multivariate stochastic vector processes is presented in this paper. Such proposed method is based on the evaluation of the complex spectral moments of the processes. These quantities are strictly related to the Mellin transform and they are the generalization of the integer-order spectral moments introduced by Vanmarcke. The knowledge of the complex spectral moments permits to obtain the power spectral densities and their cross counterpart by a complex series expansions. Moreover, with just the aid of some mathematical properties the complex fractional moments permit to obtain also the correlation and cross-correlatio…

Riesz fractional integrals and complex fractional moments for the probabilistic characterization of random variables

2012

Abstract The aim of this paper is the probabilistic representation of the probability density function (PDF) or the characteristic function (CF) in terms of fractional moments of complex order. It is shown that such complex moments are related to Riesz and complementary Riesz integrals at the origin. By invoking the inverse Mellin transform theorem, the PDF or the CF is exactly evaluated in integral form in terms of complex fractional moments. Discretization leads to the conclusion that with few fractional moments the whole PDF or CF may be restored. Application to the pathological case of an α -stable random variable is discussed in detail, showing the impressive capability to characterize…

The ‘Irving–Williams’ Order in the Metal-ligand Stretching Frequencies of Some Metal Hydrazine Complexes

1960

MANY infra-red spectra of metal complexes have been examined in the 2–15μ region, but until now very few co-ordination compounds have been studied in the caesium bromide region in which some metal-ligand atom-stretching frequencies are expected1. Furthermore, no correlation between the frequency of this vibration and the nature of the metal has been found2.

57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy predicts superstructure for K0.08[Cu(II)(N,N'app)Cl]2[Fe(III)(CN)6].0.92H3O.3H2O.

2007

The compound [Cu(N,N'app)Cl](2)[Fe(CN)(6)].xH(2)O, with N,N'app being bis(N,N'-3-aminopropylpiperazine), was prepared and its structure determined by single crystal X-ray analysis, confirming a ratio of two copper complexes to one iron complex; (57)Fe Mössbauer spectra showed three quadrupole doublets typical of iron(iii) low spin species which call for the presence of a superstructure.
