Gamma Ray Spectra from Thermal Neutron Capture on Gadolinium-155 and Natural Gadolinium
2019
Natural gadolinium is widely used for its excellent thermal neutron capture cross section, because of its two major isotopes: $^{\rm 155}$Gd and $^{\rm 157}$Gd. We measured the $\gamma$-ray spectra produced from the thermal neutron capture on targets comprising a natural gadolinium film and enriched $^{\rm 155}$Gd (in Gd$_{2}$O$_{3}$ powder) in the energy range from 0.11 MeV to 8.0 MeV, using the ANNRI germanium spectrometer at MLF, J-PARC. The freshly analysed data of the $^{\rm 155}$Gd(n, $\gamma$) reaction are used to improve our previously developed model (ANNRI-Gd model) for the $^{\rm 157}$Gd(n, $\gamma$) reaction, and its performance confirmed with the independent data from the $^{\r…
Continuous-wave cavity ring-down polarimetry
2020
We present a new cavity-based polarimetric scheme for highly sensitive and time-resolved measurements of birefringence and dichroism, linear and circular, that employs rapidly pulsed single-frequency continuous wave (CW) laser sources and extends current cavity-based spectropolarimetric techniques. We demonstrate how the use of a CW laser source allows for gains in spectral resolution, signal intensity, and data acquisition rate compared to traditional pulsed-based cavity ring-down polarimetry (CRDP). We discuss a particular CW-CRDP modality that is different from intensity-based cavity-enhanced polarimetric schemes as it relies on the determination of the polarization rotation frequency du…
Comparison of proton shower developments in the BGO calorimeter of the Dark Matter Particle Explorer between GEANT4 and FLUKA simulations
2020
The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is a satellite-borne detector for high-energy cosmic rays and $\gamma$-rays. To fully understand the detector performance and obtain reliable physical results, extensive simulations of the detector are necessary. The simulations are particularly important for the data analysis of cosmic ray nuclei, which relies closely on the hadronic and nuclear interactions of particles in the detector material. Widely adopted simulation softwares include the GEANT4 and FLUKA, both of which have been implemented for the DAMPE simulation tool. Here we describe the simulation tool of DAMPE and compare the results of proton shower properties in the calorimeter from t…
Evolution of correlation structure of industrial indices of U.S. equity markets
2013
We investigate the dynamics of correlations present between pairs of industry indices of US stocks traded in US markets by studying correlation based networks and spectral properties of the correlation matrix. The study is performed by using 49 industry index time series computed by K. French and E. Fama during the time period from July 1969 to December 2011 that is spanning more than 40 years. We show that the correlation between industry indices presents both a fast and a slow dynamics. The slow dynamics has a time scale longer than five years showing that a different degree of diversification of the investment is possible in different periods of time. On top to this slow dynamics, we als…
The energy spectrum of cosmic rays beyond the turn-down around 1017 eV as measured with the surface detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory
2021
The successful installation, commissioning, and operation of the Pierre Auger Observatory would not have been possible without the strong commitment and effort from the technical and administrative staff in Malargüe. We are very grateful to the following agencies and organizations for financial support: Argentina – Comisión Nacional de Energía Atómica; Agencia Nacional de Promoción Científica y Tecnológica (ANPCyT); Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas (CONICET); Gobierno de la Provincia de Mendoza; Municipalidad de Malargüe; NDM Holdings and Valle Las Leñas; in gratitude for their continuing cooperation over land access; Australia – the Australian Research Council; Be…
On Computability of Decaying and Nondecaying States in Quantum Systems with Cantor Spectra
2003
We study Hamiltonians with singular spectra of Cantor type with a constant ratio of dissection. The decay properties of the states in such systems depend on the nature of the dissection rate that can be characterized in terms of the algebraic number theory. We show that in spite of simplicity of the considered model the computational modeling of nondecaying states is in general impossible.
Multi-domain spectral approach with Sommerfeld condition for the Maxwell equations
2021
We present a multidomain spectral approach with an exterior compactified domain for the Maxwell equations for monochromatic fields. The Sommerfeld radiation condition is imposed exactly at infinity being a finite point on the numerical grid. As an example, axisymmetric situations in spherical and prolate spheroidal coordinates are discussed.
Measurement of deuteron spectra and elliptic flow in Pb–Pb collisions at √sNN = 2.76 TeV at the LHC
2017
The transverse momentum (pT) spectra and elliptic flow coefficient (v2) of deuterons and anti-deuterons at mid-rapidity (|y| 1.8 GeV/c within the experimental uncertainties. The measurement of the coalescence parameter B2 is performed, showing a pT dependence in contrast with the simplest coalescence model, which fails to reproduce also the measured v2 coefficient. In addition, the coalescence parameter B2 and the elliptic flow coefficient in the 20–40% centrality interval are compared with the AMPT model which is able, in its version without string melting, to reproduce the measured v2(pT) and the B2(pT) trend. peerReviewed
Electron spin polarization in the photoemission of NEA GaAs1?x P x
1982
Negative electron affinity GaAs1−xPx-photocathodes emit spin-polarized electrons if irradiated with circularly polarized light. The spectra of spin polarization of photoelectrons emitted from crystals with different phosphorus contentx resemble each other in shape but shift to shorter wavelengths with increasingx. Polarization values up to 40% are observed for electrons from crystals withx=0 andx=0.38. Cathodes with higher phosphorus contents increasing fromx=0.65 tox=0.87 and tox = 1.0 deliver photoelectrons with decreasing degrees of spin polarization of 17%, 15%, and 9%, respectively, at maximum.
A thin absorbing layer at the center of a Fabry-Pérot interferometer
1994
The influence of a dye (Rhodamin B) dissolved in solution or adsorbed at an interface at the center of a Fabry-Perot interferometer on the transmission was investigated both experimentally and theoretically. We show that (i) spectra of extremely thin films are measurable at sub-monolayer concentration (one monolayer reduces the transmission by ≃50%), (ii) the transmission is sensitive to the location of an extremely thin film within nm range and (iii) the absorption coefficient is determined quantitatively by comparison between theory and experiment thus permitting one to estimate the local concentration. The results are relevant for the use of dye probes to monitor changes of organic inter…
