On the Spectral Evolution of Cygnus X-2 along its Color-Color Diagram

We report on the results of a broad band (0.1-200 keV) spectral study of Cyg X-2 using two BeppoSAX observations taken in 1996 and 1997, respectively, for a total effective on-source time of ~100 ks. The color-color (CD) and hardness-intensity (HID) diagrams show that the source was in the horizontal branch (HB) and normal branch (NB) during the 1996 and 1997 observation, respectively. Five spectra were selected around different positions of the source in the CD/HID, two in the HB and three in the NB. These spectra are fit to a model consisting of a disk blackbody, a Comptonization component, and two Gaussian emission lines at ~1 keV and ~6.6 keV, respectively. The addition of a hard power-…
Spectral Analysis of LMC X-2 with XMM-Newton: Unveiling the Emission Process in the Extragalactic Z-source

We present the results of the analysis of an archival observation of LMC X-2 performed with XMM/Newton. The spectra taken by high-precision instruments have never been analyzed before. We find an X-ray position for the source that is inconsistent with the one obtained by ROSAT, but in agreement with the Einstein position and that of the optical counterpart. The correlated spectral and timing behaviour of the source suggests that the source is probably in the normal branch of its X-ray color-color diagram. The spectrum of the source can be fitted with a blackbody with a temperature 1.5 keV plus a disk blackbody at 0.8 keV. Photoelectric absorption from neutral matter has an equivalent hydrog…
Optical and near-infrared recombination lines of oxygen ions from Cassiopeia A knots

Context. Fast-moving knots (FMK) in the Galactic supernova remnant Cassiopeia A consist mainly of metals and allow to study element production in supernovae and shock physics in great detail. Aims. We work out theoretically and suggest to observe previously unexplored class of spectral lines -- metal recombination lines in optical and near-infrared bands -- emitted by the cold ionized and cooling plasma in the fast-moving knots. Methods. By tracing ion radiative and dielectronic recombination, collisional $l$-redistribution and radiative cascade processes, we compute resulting oxygen, silicon and sulphur recombination line emissivities. Coupling Between Periodic and Aperiodic Variability in SAX J1808.4-3658

We detect a significant broadening in the wings of the 401 Hz peak in the power spectrum of the accreting millisecond binary pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658. This feature is consistent with the convolution of the red noise present in the power spectrum with the harmonic line. We conclude that the flux modulated by the spin period shows aperiodic variability similar to the red noise in the overall flux, suggesting such variability also originates at the magnetic caps close to the neutron star surface. This is analogous to the results found in some longer period, higher magnetic field pulsators in high mass X-ray binaries.
The long time-scale X-ray variability of the radio-quiet quasar PG 0804+761

We present the results from a study of the timing properties and the energy spectrum of the radio-quiet quasar PG0804+761, based on monitoring RXTE PCA observations that lasted for a year. This is a systematic study of the X-ray variations on time scales of weeks/months of the most luminous radio-quiet quasar studied so far. We detect significant variations in the 2-10 keV band of an average amplitude of ~15%. The excess variance of the light curve is smaller than that of Seyfert galaxies, entirely consistent with the relationship between variability amplitude and luminosity defined from the Seyfert data alone. Modeling Non-Confined Coronal Flares: Dynamics and X-Ray Diagnostics

Long-lasting, intense, stellar X-ray flares may approach conditions of breaking magnetic confinement and evolving in open space. We explore this hypothesis with hydrodynamic simulations of flares occurring in a non-confined corona: model flares are triggered by a transient impulsive heating injected in a plane-parallel stratified corona. The plasma evolution is described by means of a numerical 2-D model in cylindrical geometry R,Z. We explore the space of fundamental parameters. On the origin of the X-ray emission from Herbig Ae/Be stars

We performed a systematic search for Chandra archival observations of Herbig Ae/Be stars. These stars are fully radiative and not expected to support dynamo action analogous to their convective lower-mass counterparts, the T Tauri stars. Their X-ray emission has remained unexplained. The superior spatial resolution of Chandra with respect to previous X-ray instrumentation has allowed us to examine the possible role of late-type companions in generating the observed X-rays. In the total sample of 17 Herbig Ae/Be stars, 8 are resolved from X-ray emitting faint companions or other unrelated X-ray bright objects within 10". The detection fraction of Herbig Ae/Be stars is 76 %, but lowers to 35 …
Caii H and K spectroscopic observations in active binary systems

We have performed high resolution spectroscopic observations of five active binary systems in the Caii H and K lines at La Palma Observatory. We present the absolute fluxes calculated at the surface of the stars and we discuss the spectral characteristics observed, presence of double emissions and phase variations.
The 0.1-100 keV Spectrum of LMC X-4 in the High State: Evidence for a High Energy Cyclotron Absorption Line

We report on the spectral analysis of the X-ray pulsar LMC X-4 in its high state out of eclipse observed by BeppoSAX. During this observation no coherent pulsations are detected. The primary continuum is well described by a power law with a high energy cutoff (E_cutoff ~ E_fold ~ 18 keV). The addition of a cyclotron absorption line at ~100 keV improves the fit significantly. The inferred magnetic moment is 1.1 10^{31} Gauss cm^3, in agreement with the value estimated assuming that the neutron star is at the spin equilibrium, as it has been proposed for this source. The remaining excess at low energies can be fitted by a Comptonization of soft photons by moderately hot electrons (kT ~0.9 keV…
The 0.1–100 keV Spectrum of Centaurus X‐3: Pulse Phase Spectroscopy of the Cyclotron Line and Magnetic Field Structure

We report spectral and temporal analysis of the X-ray pulsar Centaurus X-3 out of eclipse observed by BeppoSAX. The broadband spectrum (0.12-100 keV) is well described by an absorbed power law modified by a high-energy rollover at ~14 keV (e-folding energy ~8 keV) plus an iron emission line at ~6.7 keV. A soft excess below 1 keV is also present. Interpreted as a blackbody (kT 0.1 keV), it corresponds to 58% of the total unabsorbed flux. This component seems to originate from reprocessing of the primary radiation by an opaque shell located at the magnetosphere. An absorption feature at ~30 keV is also present.
