Properties of the isolated neutron star RX J185635-3754

Abstract Despite improved observational capabilities, the surface properties of neutron stars remain uncertain. In principle, multiwavelength spectra can reveal their compositions and angular diameters and constrain the interior equation of state. The Chandra LETG spectrum of the brightest isolated neutron star is a featureless continuum. The X-ray blackbody fit underpredicts the observed optical fluxes, but the spectral energy distribution can be fit with a two blackbody model. No pulsations are seen. We discuss model atmosphere fits. We conclude there is no need to invoke exotic physics: RX J185635-3754 is likely a 0.5 × 10 6 years old pulsar.

Spectral Analysis of Individual Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes Detected by ASIM

The Atmosphere-Space Interactions Monitor (ASIM) is the first instrument in space specifically designed to observe terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs). TGFs are high energy photons associated with lightning flashes and we perform the spectral analysis of 17 TGFs detected by ASIM. The TGF sample is carefully selected by rigorous selection criteria to keep a clean sample suitable for spectral analysis, that is, suitable count statistics, low instrumental effects, and reliable source location. Monte Carlo modeling of individual TGFs has been compared to the observed energy spectra to study the possible source altitudes and beaming geometries. An abundance analysis of the symbiotic star CH Cyg

The photospheric abundances for the cool component of the symbiotic star CH Cyg were calculated for the first time using high-resolution near-infrared spectra and the method of of standard LTE analysis and atmospheric models. The iron abundance for CH Cyg was found to be solar, [Fe/H] = 0.0+/-0.19. The atmospheric parameters and metallicity for CH Cyg are found to be approximately equal to those for nearby field M7 giants. The calculated [C/H] = -0.15, [N/H] = +0.16, [O/H] = -0.07, and the isotopic ratios of 12C/13C and 16O/17O are close to the mean values for single M giants that have experienced the first dredge-up. A new approach to determination of the asymmetry parameter of Stark-broadened isolated spectral lines

A new approach to evaluation of asymmetry parameters of Stark-broadened isolated spectral lines is presented. The procedure is discussed on the example of the N I line at λ = 9822.75 A. Line shape measurements were performed using a wall-stabilized arc, operated at atmospheric pressure. The radiation of the plasma, emitted from homogeneous plasma layers in end-on direction, was measured using a grating spectrometer equipped with a two-dimensional CCD detector. Griem-like profiles, convoluted with the corresponding Doppler and apparatus profiles, were fitted to experimental data. In this study we present a hyperspectral flying goniometer system, based on a rotary-wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) equipped with a spectrometer mounted on an active gimbal. We show that this approach may be used to collect multiangular hyperspectral data over vegetated environments. The pointing and positioning accuracy are assessed using structure from motion and vary from σ = 1° to 8° in pointing and σ = 0.7 to 0.8 m in positioning. We use a wheat dataset to investigate the influence of angular effects on the NDVI, TCARI and REIP vegetation indices. Singlet and triplet potentials of the ground-state atom pair Rb+Cs studied by Fourier-transform spectroscopy

A comprehensive study of the $X {}^{1}\ensuremath{\Sigma}{}^{+}$ and $a {}^{3}\ensuremath{\Sigma}{}^{+}$ electronic states of the Rb and Cs atom pair in RbCs is presented. Nonlinear magneto-optical rotation in rubidium vapor excited with blue light

We present experimental and numerical studies of nonlinear magneto-optical rotation (NMOR) in rubidium vapor excited with resonant light tuned to the $5^2\!S_{1/2}\rightarrow 6^2\!P_{1/2}$ absorption line (421~nm). Contrary to the experiments performed to date on the strong $D_1$ or $D_2$ lines, in this case, the spontaneous decay of the excited state $6^2\!P_{1/2}$ may occur via multiple intermediate states, affecting the dynamics, magnitude and other characteristics of NMOR. Comparing the experimental results with the results of modelling based on Auzinsh et al., Phys. Rev. Microcalorimeter/EBIT measurements of X-ray spectra of highly charged ions

Spectra of highly charged Ar, Kr, Xe and Fe ions, produced in an Electron Beam Ion Trap (EBIT), have been recorded in a broad X-ray energy band (0.2 keV to 10 keV) with a microcalorimeter detector. The first analysis of the Kr spectra has been completed and most of the spectral lines have been identified as transitions of B- to Al-like Kr. Line intensity ratios of Fe XVII have been measured and compared with theoretical models.

Hyperfine interaction in the Autler-Townes effect: The formation of bright, dark, and chameleon states

This paper is devoted to clarifying the implications of hyperfine (HF) interaction in the formation of adiabatic (i.e., ``laser-dressed'') states and their expression in the Autler-Townes (AT) spectra. We first use the Morris-Shore model [J. R. Morris and B. W. Shore, Phys. Rev. A 27, 906 (1983)] to illustrate how bright and dark states are formed in a simple reference system where closely spaced energy levels are coupled to a single state with a strong laser field with the respective Rabi frequency ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Omega}}}_{S}$.
