Morse-Smale index theorems for elliptic boundary deformation problems.
2012
AbstractMorse-type index theorems for self-adjoint elliptic second order boundary value problems arise as the second variation of an energy functional corresponding to some variational problem. The celebrated Morse index theorem establishes a precise relation between the Morse index of a geodesic (as critical point of the geodesic action functional) and the number of conjugate points along the curve. Generalization of this theorem to linear elliptic boundary value problems appeared since seventies. (See, for instance, Smale (1965) [12], Uhlenbeck (1973) [15] and Simons (1968) [11] among others.) The aim of this paper is to prove a Morse–Smale index theorem for a second order self-adjoint el…
On $L^p$ resolvent estimates for Laplace-Beltrami operators on compact manifolds
2011
Abstract. In this article we prove Lp estimates for resolvents of Laplace–Beltrami operators on compact Riemannian manifolds, generalizing results of Kenig, Ruiz and Sogge (1987) in the Euclidean case and Shen (2001) for the torus. We follow Sogge (1988) and construct Hadamard's parametrix, then use classical boundedness results on integral operators with oscillatory kernels related to the Carleson and Sjölin condition. Our initial motivation was to obtain Lp Carleman estimates with limiting Carleman weights generalizing those of Jerison and Kenig (1985); we illustrate the pertinence of Lp resolvent estimates by showing the relation with Carleman estimates. Such estimates are useful in the …
Dirichlet approximation and universal Dirichlet series
2016
We characterize the uniform limits of Dirichlet polynomials on a right half plane. In the Dirichlet setting, we find approximation results, with respect to the Euclidean distance and {to} the chordal one as well, analogous to classical results of Runge, Mergelyan and Vitushkin. We also strengthen the notion of universal Dirichlet series.
Existence of minimizers for eigenvalues of the Dirichlet-Laplacian with a drift
2015
Abstract This paper deals with the eigenvalue problem for the operator L = − Δ − x ⋅ ∇ with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We are interested in proving the existence of a set minimizing any eigenvalue λ k of L under a suitable measure constraint suggested by the structure of the operator. More precisely we prove that for any c > 0 and k ∈ N the following minimization problem min { λ k ( Ω ) : Ω quasi-open set , ∫ Ω e | x | 2 / 2 d x ≤ c } has a solution.
A note on k-generalized projections
2007
Abstract In this note, we investigate characterizations for k -generalized projections (i.e., A k = A ∗ ) on Hilbert spaces. The obtained results generalize those for generalized projections on Hilbert spaces in [Hong-Ke Du, Yuan Li, The spectral characterization of generalized projections, Linear Algebra Appl. 400 (2005) 313–318] and those for matrices in [J. Benitez, N. Thome, Characterizations and linear combinations of k -generalized projectors, Linear Algebra Appl. 410 (2005) 150–159].
Notes on the subspace perturbation problem for off-diagonal perturbations
2014
The variation of spectral subspaces for linear self-adjoint operators under an additive bounded off-diagonal perturbation is studied. To this end, the optimization approach for general perturbations in [J. Anal. Math., to appear; arXiv:1310.4360 (2013)] is adapted. It is shown that, in contrast to the case of general perturbations, the corresponding optimization problem can not be reduced to a finite-dimensional problem. A suitable choice of the involved parameters provides an upper bound for the solution of the optimization problem. In particular, this yields a rotation bound on the subspaces that is stronger than the previously known one from [J. Reine Angew. Math. (2013), DOI:10.1515/cre…

We define and prove characterizations of Hardy-Orlicz spaces of conformal densities.
Approximations of positive operators and continuity of the spectral radius III
1994
AbstractWe prove estimates on the speed of convergence of the ‘peripheral eigenvalues’ (and principal eigenvectors) of a sequence Tn of positive operators on a Banach lattice E to the peripheral eigenvalues of its limit operator T on E which is positive, irreducible and such that the spectral radius r(T) of T is a Riesz point of the spectrum of T (that is, a pole of the resolvent of T with a residuum of finite rank) under some conditions on the kind of approximation of Tn to T. These results sharpen results of convergence obtained by the authors in previous papers.
Toeplitz band matrices with small random perturbations
2021
We study the spectra of $N\times N$ Toeplitz band matrices perturbed by small complex Gaussian random matrices, in the regime $N\gg 1$. We prove a probabilistic Weyl law, which provides an precise asymptotic formula for the number of eigenvalues in certain domains, which may depend on $N$, with probability sub-exponentially (in $N$) close to $1$. We show that most eigenvalues of the perturbed Toeplitz matrix are at a distance of at most $\mathcal{O}(N^{-1+\varepsilon})$, for all $\varepsilon >0$, to the curve in the complex plane given by the symbol of the unperturbed Toeplitz matrix.
Analysis of geometric operators on open manifolds: A groupoid approach
2001
The first five sections of this paper are a survey of algebras of pseudodifferential operators on groupoids. We thus review differentiable groupoids, the definition of pseudodifferential operators on groupoids, and some of their properties. We use then this background material to establish a few new results on these algebras, results that are useful for the analysis of geometric operators on non-compact manifolds and singular spaces. The first step is to establish that the geometric operators on groupoids are in our algebras. This then leads to criteria for the Fredholmness of geometric operators on suitable non-compact manifolds, as well as to an inductive procedure to study their essentia…
