Assessing the impact of copy number variants on miRNA genes in autism by Monte Carlo simulation.
2014
Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) are childhood neurodevelopmental disorders with complex genetic origins. Previous studies have investigated the role of de novo Copy Number Variants (CNVs) and microRNAs as important but distinct etiological factors in ASD. We developed a novel computational procedure to assess the potential pathogenic role of microRNA genes overlapping de novo CNVs in ASD patients. Here we show that for chromosomes # 1, 2 and 22 the actual number of miRNA loci affected by de novo CNVs in patients was found significantly higher than that estimated by Monte Carlo simulation of random CNV events. Out of 24 miRNA genes over-represented in CNVs from these three chromosomes only …
Parenting Stress in Families of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and ADHD
2015
The purpose of this study was to compare the parenting stress experienced by parents of 121 children from 5 to 9 years old with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), comorbid ASD+ADHD, and typical development in different domains related to child and parent characteristics using the Parenting Stress Index. The three clinical groups presented greater perceived parenting stress than did the comparison group (CG). The ADHD group obtained higher levels of parenting stress related to attachment and depression than did the other groups. The ASD+ADHD group presented a unique profile of differences from the CG on Health and Spouse subscales. Results highl…
Anaphor Processing During Reading Comprehension in Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder
2021
With the purpose of promoting academic inclusion, it is essential for educators to understand the nature underlying poor reading comprehension in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). In th...
Customization Support in Computer-Based Technologies for Autism: A Systematic Mapping Study
2020
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by social interaction and communication difficulties, along with narrow and repetitive interests. Being a spectrum dis...
Boolean Networks: A Primer
2021
Abstract Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) stand out as a relevant example where omics-data approaches have been extensively and successfully employed. For instance, an outstanding outcome of the Autism Genome Project relies in the identification of biomarkers and the mapping of biological processes potentially implicated in ASDs’ pathogenesis. Several of these mapped processes are related to molecular and cellular events (e.g., synaptogenesis and synapse function, axon growth and guidance, etc.) that are required for the development of a correct neuronal connectivity. Interestingly, these data are consistent with results of brain imaging studies of some patients. Despite these remarkable pr…
SMART-ASD, model and ontology definition: a technology recommendation system for people with autism and/or intellectual disabilities
2018
There are many studies that encourage the use of mobile device solutions to improve the skills of people with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). There are a number of apps that may be useful for people with ASD, some specifically designed for them, and others not. The main goal of the SMART-ASD project is to assist in the selection of adequate technology and all related accessories. In this project, the users' data are maintained into an ontology. This ontology also includes information about devices, apps, and protection. The system is a hybrid recommendation system that guides parents and professionals in the selection of the adequate technology. This paper presents the SMART-ASD model an…
Lower cortisol response in high-resilient caregivers of people with autism: the role of anger
2016
Caring for an offspring with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been related to high stress levels and health disturbances. However, a protective effect against these negative health outcomes has been described in high-resilient caregivers. In this context, the main aim of the present study was to assess the association between resilient coping and cortisol response to acute stress in caregivers of people with ASD. Furthermore, the study aimed to explore the mediating role of anger in this association. We exposed 40 caregivers of people with ASD to an acute psychosocial stressor in the laboratory. Salivary cortisol samples were obtained before, during, and after the stressor. Resilient c…
ESTRÉS Y AFRONTAMIENTO EN FAMILIAS DE HIJOS CON TRASTORNO DE ESPECTRO AUTISTA
2016
Abstract.Research shows the relationship between having children with neurodevelopmental disorders and family stress. The Autism Spectrum Disorder or ASD has its own symptoms and a number of additional problems that give it a distinctive profile. These differences are reflected in the levels of stress shown by caregivers of children with the disorder. Coping is a reaction to behavioral and / or psychological stress, aimed at reducing the destructive stress attributes. Theories of stress and coping, as well as more specific models of family accommodation show how coping strategies have an important role in the outcome of adaptation. Consequently, depending on the type of coping strategies us…
ESTRATEGIAS Y ESTILOS DE AFRONTAMIENTO PARENTAL EN FAMILIAS CON NIÑOS CON TRASTORNO DE ESPECTRO AUTISTA (TEA) CON O SIN TRASTORNO POR DÉFICIT DE ATEN…
2015
Management of children with autism spectrum disorder in the dental setting
2013
Objectives: This article reviews the present literature on the issues encountered while coping with children with autistic spectrum disorder from the dental perspective. The autistic patient profile and external factors affecting the oral health status of this patient population are discussed upon the existing body of evidence. Material and Methods: The MEDLINE database was searched using the terms ‘Autistic Disorder’, ‘Behaviour Control/methods’, ‘Child’, ‘Dental care for disabled’, ‘Education’, ‘Oral Health’, and ‘Pediatric Dentistry’ to locate related articles published up to January 2013. Results: Most of the relevant studies indicate poor oral hygiene whereas they are inconclusive rega…
