Adopting encryption to protect confidential data in public clouds: A review of solutions, implementation challenges and alternatives

2015

A shift towards use of public cloud services is ongoing and more and more enterprises will start to use them in the near future. As public cloud services certainly promise to deliver many benefits, this new way of delivering services also introduces new types of risks. Due to the NSA’s surveillance programs, non-US enterprises need to reassess the risks of public cloud services provided by US companies and look for available solutions to protect their confidential data transferred and stored in the cloud. Encryption is seen as a solution to help enterprises full fill the requirements related to security and privacy, but is often challenging to implement. Encryption has its own security prob…

Temporal genetic structure in a poecilogonous polychaete: the interplay of developmental mode and environmental stochasticity

2014

Background: Temporal variation in the genetic structure of populations can be caused by multiple factors, including natural selection, stochastic environmental variation, migration, or genetic drift. In benthic marine species, the developmental mode of larvae may indicate a possibility for temporal genetic variation: species with dispersive planktonic larvae are expected to be more likely to show temporal genetic variation than species with benthic or brooded non-dispersive larvae, due to differences in larval mortality and dispersal ability. We examined temporal genetic structure in populations of Pygospio elegans, a poecilogonous polychaete with within-species variation in developmental m…

Folate targeted coated SPIONs as efficient tool for MRI

2017

The development of more sensitive diagnostic tools allowing an early-stage and highly efficient medical imaging of tumors remains a challenge. Magnetic nanoparticles seem to be the contrast agents with the highest potential, if properly constructed. Therefore, in this study, hybrid magnetic nanoarchitectures were developed using a new amphiphilic inulin-based graft copolymer (INU-LAPEG-FA) as coating material for 10-nm spinel iron oxide (magnetite, Fe3O4) superparamagnetic nanoparticles (SPION). Folic acid (FA) covalently linked to the coating copolymer in order to be exposed onto the nanoparticle surface was chosen as the targeting agent because folate receptors are upregulated in many can…

Data from: DNA methylation and potential for epigenetic regulation in Pygospio elegans

2016

Transitions in developmental mode are common evolutionarily, but how and why they occur is not understood. Developmental mode describes larval phenotypes, including morphology, ecology and behavior of larvae, which typically are generalized across different species. The polychaete worm Pygospio elegans is one of few species polymorphic in developmental mode, with multiple larval phenotypes, providing a possibility to examine the potential mechanisms allowing transitions in developmental mode. We investigated the presence of DNA methylation in P. elegans, and, since maternal provisioning is a key factor determining eventual larval phenotype, we compared patterns of DNA methylation in females…
