The following paper examines, from a multimodal perspective, a counseling sequence between a teacher and a student in the tenth grade at an Italian high school during a lesson of Extensive Reading in German as a foreign language. After an overview of the state of research on counseling during the lesson and a description of the function of counseling in extensive reading, there follows the presentation of the methodological procedure for the analysis. Abstract On the basis of CNDO/2 molecular orbital calculations, we postulate the following detailed mechanism for the catalytic isomerization of xylenes which explains the initial product distributions and also our previous finding that the reaction is intramolecular: (i) adsorption of xylene on a surface acid site to form a Wheland-type complex; (ii) disrotatory cyclization of the protonated species into a bicyclo[3, 1, 0]hexenyl complex; (iii) migration of the methylene bridge to a new side of the pentagonal ring; (iv) change of the new bicyclic species back into the corresponding Wheland-type complex; (v) desorption of the xylene isomer from the surface of the catalyst. Although after Unification Italy was predominantly a country of emigration, in recent years it has become a hub for migrants from different parts of the world. Among these migrants a group of writers has contributed to re-configuring Italy's national literary identity. Read by critics primarily as an autobiographical text with remarkable sociological value, Tunisian-born Salah Methnani’s Immigrato is, I argue, first and foremost a classic Bildungsroman. The New Woman fiction, popular in the last decade of the 19th century, contested the traditional notions of gender roles and participated in the public debates on women’s rights. The protagonists of the New Woman novels refused to conform to the submissive and self-abnegating Victorian ideal of femininity.
